SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,072, dated December 16, 1902.

To all whom it r11/ty concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK T. LIPPINooTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in `IrIose-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of hose-clamps of that class which are adapted for clamping a section of hose in connection with a plate or for clamping hose-section in connection with hose-couplings; and the objects of my invention are to provide asimple and effective clamp of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct the same as .to insure a uniform bearing of the clamp-body on the periphery vof the hose, and thereby obviate any tendency toward leakage, and torproduce other improvements, the details of construction of which will be more `fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I Aaccomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis an end viewof lioseand pipe sections united by my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line no of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is aview in elevation at right angles with that shown in Fig. 2.

In carrying out my invention I employ a clamping-body formed of two sections l and 2, these sections being in the nature of metallic strips, the section 2 being formed throughout the greater portion of its length with a mortise or slotted opening 3. The section 2 is bent to the curved form shown and has one of its ends, which I will term its outer end, bent outward substantially at right angles 4with its body, as shown at 4, to form an ear. This outwardly-bent portion is reinforced or strengthened by being formed with sideflanges, such as are indicated at 4a. At the upper termination of the slot or mortise 3 the projection or ear 4 is formed with Serial No. 116,556. (No model.)

One end of the section or strip l is bent to form a hook, as indicated at la, said hook portion being adapted to pass through the slotted opening 3 of the section 2 and engage the inner end of said last-named section in the manner shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The remaining or outer end portion of the section l passes through the outer end portion of the slot 3 and, as prescribed for said section 2, is formed with an outturned ear portion 6. Passing through an opening in the ear 4 and through the internally-threaded central opening of the nut 5 is a screw 7.
The manner of utilizing my device may be described as follows: Assuming that it is desired to unite or clamp together a pipe-section, such as is indicated at 8, and a hose-section 9, said hose-section is first slipped over the end of said pipe-section, after which the curved body portions of the two clampingsections l and 2 are caused to embrace the hose, the screw 7 being previously turned outward, so as to permit the free insertion of the section l through the slot of the section 2 and at the salne time permit of the lhook end 1a being hooked in connection with the end of the section 2. This being accomplished, the screw 7 is turned inward, its outer and smaller end bearing in an opening llO in the ear 6. By continuing the inward movement of the screw it will readily be understood that the ears of the two clamping-sections will be forced farther apart and that said clampingsections will thereby be drawn into closer or binding contact with the periphery of the hose. Owing tothe fact that the outer end portions of the clam pin g-sections pass each other and the further fact that the tightening of the screw results in forcing the ends of said clampingsections farther apart, the clamping action of the sections will be maintained throughout the circumference of the hose-section. This uniform clamping of the hose results in tightening of the hose-section equally about the pipe-section, thus obviating any tendency toward leakage. Although my improved hoseclamp is described as adapted for use in connecting a hose and pipe section, it is obvious IOO that the same may similarly be employed in connecting the sections of water-hose with an ordinary tubular coupling.
It is obvious that although my improved clamp is shown and described as constructed in two sections having a hook connection said clamping-body might bel produced of one strip of material adapted to be bent or sprung about the hose-section.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hose-clamp,l comprising a flexible loop having opposite overlapped free end portions, one of which is slotted and the other end portion is projected loosely through the sloteach free end portion having an outwardly-projected ear, the slotted end portion also having an outwardly-projected lip spaced from the inner face of the adjacent ear, a nut held between the ear and the lip, and an adjusting screw piercing the nut and engaging the opposite ear to force the end portions of the loop apart.
2. A hose-clamp, comprising.,y a flexible loop having opposite overlapped free end portions, one of which is slotted and the other end portion is projected loosely through the slot, each free end portion having an outwardly-projected ear, Opposite stiHening-flanges extending from opposite edges of the ears to the adjacent end portions of theloop, and adjusting means extending between the ears for forcing the ends of the loop apart.
3. A hose-clamp, comprising a flexible loop having opposite overlapped free end portions, one of which is slotted and the other is projected loosely through the slot, each free end portion havinga terminal outwardly-directed .ear and flanges extending from opposite edges ear with its opposite end swiveled to the other ear.
4. A hose-clam p, comprising opposite arcuate exible members formed of metallic strips, one ofthe members being wider than the other and provided with a longitudinal slot extending throughout the greater portion thereof, one end of the narrow member being projected through one end of the slot and bent into a hook which pivotall y embraces the adjacent end of the slotted member and the opposite end of the narrow member being projected loosely through the opposite end of the slot, the corresponding free ends of the members having terminal outwardly-directed ears set at substantially right angles to the adjacent end portions of the members, flanges extending from opposite edges of the ears to the adjacent edges of corresponding members, a lip bent outwardly from the slotted member at the outer end of the slot, a nut held between the lip and the adjacent ear, and an adjusting-screw piercing the nut and the adjacent ear with its opposite end terminally swiveled in a perforation in the other ear.
