Description

@with tetes s'twt @fitter IMPROVEMENT IN STOVB-PIPE THIMBLES..
@Llp tlphule trierreh in in time stttr @anni ath making @nrt uf tige same.
To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. GALLAGHER, of the city and county-oi` St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Thimbles', Stoppers, and Registers andI do hereby ldeclare that the following is afull and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a. thimble, provided with a self-acting stopper, so as to close the hole automati# cally as soon as the stove-pipe shall have been withdrawn therefrom, the sail stopper being so arranged as to be opened by the simple act ofvthrusting the pipe therein. In combination with the thimble there are Ventilating registers. i
To enable-those skilledvin-the'art to make and use myim'proved thim'ble,fstopper, and register, I will proceed toA describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a sectional elevation, in perspective, of a. chimney, provided with the improved tbimble, stopper, and register. i
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of thethimble, stopper, and register, alone.
A is the 4brick'chimney, into which the thimble and register-plate B are to, be inserted, as shown in the drawings, the said plate-projecting far enough beyond the face of the wallinto the room to receive the plastering. In the central part of the plate Ba; hole is left, of the proper size for the stove-pipe to be inserted. Immediately inside of the plate is a pendulous stopper-plate B', pivoted to the plate'B at cc, andfso arranged that it may easily be raised out of the way by the simple act. of inserting the stove-pipe, lying on top of which it will remain while the stove-pipe is in the thimble, but as soon as the said pipe is withdrawn the stopper-plate willfall by its own gravity, so as to close completely the hole'in the thimble. There are Ventilating-registers, b, in the face of the plate B, both above and below the stove-pipe hole. '.,lbose above the said pipe-hole will be closed when the pipe `is in the hole by the .upper or Lwing of the plat-e B, the construction of which is clearlyy shown iu fig. 2. The Ventilating-registers below the stove-pipe hole may be left entirely open, or they may be closed by means of a slide (not shown.) When theV plate -B is down, so as to close the stove-pipe hole, as it will be in summer when the pipe is withdrawn, the upper registers will be open so as to Ventilate the apartment, but when the pipe is in the thimble the upper registers will be .closed,V as less means of ventilation will be required in winter thanin summer.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is-
The thimble-plate B, provided with registers b, in combination with the selfacting stopper-plate B L, when the latter is arranged so a-s to be operated substantially in the manner as herein shown'and described.
JOSEPH P. GALLAGHER.
