' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. SOHRAFFT, OF SOMERVILLE, AND FREDERICK E. HALL, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION PREMIUM-TICKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,879, dated December 16, 1902.
Application filed May 29, 1902. Serial No. 109,472. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SCHRAFFT, a resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, andFEEDEEIoK E. HALL, a resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Premium- Ticket, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to produce a combination set of premium-tickets, one of which is to be given away with each purchase of goods, the purchaser to be entitled to a certain premium in exchange for the tickets when he has made a sufficient number of purchases of goods to collect the full set of tickets.
The invention will now be fully described by reference to the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims at the close of the specification.
In the drawings, Figures 1 to 8 represent a set of eight tickets, each bearing the keyword S-c-h-r-a-f-f-t, the number of tickets in the set being equal to the number of letters in the key-word, all but one of the letters in the word being of a uniform color-say blackand one letter on each ticket being of a contrasting color-say redthe letter which is printed in the contrasting color varying in each ticket of the set, beginning with the first.
In the drawings, Figs. 1 to 8 represent a specimen set of eight tickets, illustrating the invention. Fig. 9 is a view of the rear face of the ticket, which is the same on each ticket.
Each of the eight tickets 1 2 3 4 5 6 '7 8 has printed on the face thereof the key-word, which may be any selected word. For illustration the word Schrafft is employed in the drawings as the key-word. The number of tickets in the set should be equal to the number of letters in the key word or words. All but one of the letters of the key-word on each ticket should be of the same colorsay blackand one letter on each ticket should be of a contrasting colorsay red-the letter which is of the contrasting color varying in each ticket of the series, beginning with the first and continuing successively in order of the letters in the word to the last letter.
Thus in the specimen ticket illustrated in ticket 1 the letter S will be of the contrasting color. In ticket 2 the letter C will be of the contrasting color, and so on through the set. By spreading outthe full set in their correct order and taking only the letters of the contrasting color they will spell out the key-word Schrafft.
In applying the tickets to use one ticket is inclosed in the wrapper of each article of merchandise sold, and the purchaser is expected to retain the tickets until he gets a full set. When the customer has by his purchases collected a full set of tickets, so that they spell out the key-word in the letters of contrasting color, it is intended that he should be entitled to exchange the tickets for a premium of some kind of merchandise.
Each ticket should preferably bear the name and address of the person who will redeem the tickets and also contain a promise of redemption and directions to the purchaser-such, for instance, as shown in Fig. 9Send us eight of these tickets with the red letters spelling the name Schrafft (one red letter on each) and your name and address and we will send you a box of our goods free.
The key-word may be any selected word or Words. It may be the name of the seller, or it may be a word or words wholly disassociated with the name of the seller.
Instead of having the distinguishing letter of a different color it may be of a different face of type on each ticket or have any other distinguishing characteristic which will run through the series of tickets in order from the first to the last letter.
What we claim is- 1. A combination set of premium-tickets each having printed thereon a key-word, the number of tickets being equal to the number of letters in the word, and each ticket having one of the letters of a color distinguishing it from the other letters on the same ticket, the distinguishing letter being different on each ticket and the distinguishing letters on all the tickets placed in order spelling the keyword, substantially as described.
2. A combination set of premium-tickets each having printed thereon a key-word, the number of tickets being equal to the number of letters in the word, and each ticket having one of the letters of a distinguishing character from the other letters on the same ticket, the distinguishing letter being different on each ticket and the distinguishing letters on all the tickets placed in order spelling the key-word, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. SCHRAFFT. FREDERICK E. HALL. \Vitnesses:
WILLIAM A. COPELAND, ROBERT WALLACE.
