NELS I?. NELSON, OF ASHBY, MINNESOTA.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,846, dated December 16, 1902. Application filed September 22, 1902. Serial No. 124,406. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom,V t may concern/' Be it known that I, NELS P. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashby, in the county of Grant and State of Minnesota, have inventedl certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in lthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire-stretchers; and it consists in the provision of means whereby the wire is securely gripped by means of a pivoted lever which holds the wire between the corrugated or toothed end of said lever and the wheel mounted in the frame of the stretcher, the stretcher being disposed at an angle and adapted to be held against and turned about a post in the act of stretching the wire.
The invention Consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be jhereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure lis a top plan view of the device as applied to a post. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the instrument with the lever open and separate from the post. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stretcher. Fig. 4 is a detail of the lever.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bar, which is bent at an angle at A', and in one end of said bar is formed a hook B, which may be provided for the purpose of pulling staples or other purposes, and said bar is outwardly curved adjacent to its angled portion and has riveted thereto an arm C, which is curved to conform to the curve in said bar, forming a yoke, in the walls of which a pintle D is journaled, carrying a metallic wheel E, which has, preferably, a corrugated circumference and is adapted to coperate with the serrated edge F of the lever F', which is pivoted at H to the bar for the purpose of gripping the wire which is interposed between said wheel and the adjacent end of the lever. the lever F is preferably inclined, as shown, in order to produce a cam for the purpose of gripping the wire. The handle N of the lever F has a projecting portion K, which is at right angles to the broad face of the handle of the lever and is so constructed as to be convenient for the operator to rest a linger or thumb upon the same in order to hold the wire between the lever and the wheel during the stretching thereof.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a wire-stretcher, as illustrated, I am able to securely grip and hold the wire, and by reason of the shape of the bar the latter may be held against and turned about the post during the stretching operation.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wire-stretcher comprising a bar A having a lateral offset formed at an angled part of the bar, an arm O which is fastenedv to the angled end of the bar, and partially inclosing said offset portion, and forming with the latter a yoke, a pivotal pin mounted in said yoke and a metallic wheel j ournaled thereon, ahandie N pivoted to said bar and having a serrated cam end forming a jaw to hold the wire against saidmetallic wheel, the opposite end of said handle having a tapering right-an gled projection, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' VNELS P. NELSON.
