HARPER PEASE, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
PENClL-SHARPENER, lNK-ERASER, AND PAPER-CUTTER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,419, dated December 9, 1902.
Application filedMaroh Z, 1901 To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARPER PEASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Penoil-Sharpener, Ink-Eraser, and Paper-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pencil attachments; and the object is to provide a very simple and convenient attachpencil eraser, and a paper-cutter, and to so construct the same that the attachment may be sold with the pencil without materially increasing the selling price of the latter.
With the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lead-pencil provided with my attachment; Fig. 2, an enlarged side elevation of the attachment; Fig. 3, an edge view of the same; Fig. 4, a transverse section, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates a tube having its sides slotted to'form spring portions B to tightly clasp the pencil when the attachment is positioned thereon.
Extending from the tube A is a conicalshaped portion 0, having formed therein a longitudinally-extending slot D. At the apex 0t the conical-shaped portion is a cup E, formed with spiral threads F, which are spun therein. This cup is adapted to hold a piece of erasive rubber G for the purpose of removing pencil-marks, said rubber being tightly held in the cup by means of the spiral threads, which extend upon the inner side of said cup.
Extending on opposite sides of the conical portion are fiat ribs H, which at their upper ends are attached to the inner end of the cup and serve as strengthening-ribs. One of these ribs is formed along one of the edges of the slotD,formed in the wall of the conical-shaped Serial No, 49,577. (No model.)
portion, and hence is disposed at an incline tion with respect to the other rib. Secured to this inclined rib is a knife I, having a cutting edge J which extends slightly into the interior of the conical-shaped portionand constitutes the cutter for sharpening the pencil. Said knife is formed at its outer end with an extension K, which extends parallel with the outer surface of the cup and has cutting edges L and L formed, respectively, on its opposite sides. This constitutes the eraser for ink and also the envelop-opener and paper-cutter.
The cutter L may be very conveniently used, the pencil constituting the handle, and it will be found a very convenient and desirable addition to the attachment, the same being always at hand ready for use.
The attachment above described may be manufactured at a very small cost, so that it may be sold with the lead-pencil without increasing the selling price of the latter.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pencil-sharpener, a conical-shaped metal casing having a longitudinal slot, a rib formed upon one side of said casing, a cuttingplate rigidly secured to said rib and having one of its cutting edges extending into said slot, and a projection integral with said plate and having oppositely-disposed cutting edges.
2. In an article of the class described, a conical-shaped portion having a longitudinal slot and adapted to be secured at its lower end to a suitable handle, a rib longitudinally formed on one edge of said conical-shaped portion, a knife-plate rigidly secured to said rib and having one cutting edge projected into said slot, an arm integral with said plate extending beyond its upper end, said integral arm having cutting edges on both of its sides, substantially as and for the purpose described.
HARPER PEASE.
