Beit known that I, HANS HANSSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shingleton, in the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Peeling Poles, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,rcference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in use in peeling bark; and it has more especial reference to that class of tools which are designed for use in peeling bark from telegraph-poles, spars, c.

The invention hasforits object the provision of a simple and efficient tool'of this character which will be much more serviceable than tools heretofore provided for the purpose, the tool being of such a character as to render it possible by its use to quickly and easily remove the bark from telegraph-poles, spars, and other heavy timbers without ne cessitating the turning of the pole or timber more than once, and an essential feature of the present invention resides in the peculiar form of the blade of the tool, whereby little friction or binding against the faces of the blade is encountered.

To these ends and to such others as the in vention may pertain the same consists in the novel form of the tool, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a like view upon line 4 4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a like view upon line 5 5 of Fig. 1.

one of its ends fitted within a socket B at the upper end of the blade. The blade B in .general form closely resembles the blade of an ordinary chisel; but in detail it differs therefrom in several important particulars, being much wider, and, unlike a chisel-blade, it has a sharp edge beveled upon both sides of the blade, and instead of having a flat face, as is common in chisels, each face of the blade is provided with a pronounced raised portion or ridge E, which extends substantially the entire length of the blade upon a line drawn through its longitudinal center. These raised portions or ridges E, it will be observed, rise a considerable distance above the face of the blade, so that the blade at its longitudinal center is much-thicker than at its outer edges, the thickness of the blade decreasing gradually from its longitudinal center toward its outer edges. This peculiar form of the blade is, as stated, the essential feature of the invention, as it will be at once noted that it adds materially to the strength of the blade, thus permitting great force to be applied to the tool in using the same as a lever without danger of' bending or breaking the blade, the raised portions or longitudinal ridges serving both to strengthen the blade and also serving to engage the inner face of the bark and the outer face of the tree-trunk beneath the bark, respectively, and thus prevent the binding of the tool.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described tool designed for use in peeling poles, posts, spars, &c., the same consisting of a blade substantially chiselshaped and having a cutting edge at one end but provided upon its opposite faces with raised portions or ridges extending substantially the entire length of the blade, upon a line drawn through its longitudinal center and tapering toward the side edges, in combinanation with an operating-handle, substantially as described and for the purpose speciiied.
