BUNSEN 0R LIKE BURNER.

UNITED STATES PATENT, Urrrcn WILHELM SCHAEFER, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.

BUNSEN OR LIKE BURNER.

:I-EGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,300, dated December 9, 1902.

Application filed January 14, 1902. Serial No. 39,724- (No model.) i

To all? whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, WILHELM Sonnnrnn, engineer, of Kleine Backerstrasse 83, Hamburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements Relating to Bunsen or Like Burners, (for which patent applications have been made in Germany, filed June 15, 1901; in Belgium, dated July 4, 1901; in France, dated December 20, 1901, and in Great Britain, dated December 30, 1901,) of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to Bunsen andlike burners in which for the purpose of regulating the proportion of the mixture of air and gas the mixing-chamber can be so reduced in volume capacity as to reduce the air-inlet.

The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a section of a burner embodying this invention with fully-opened airinlet, and Fig. 2 shows a similar section of the burner with reduced air-inlet.

A nozzle a is secured to a tubular nipple b in connection with a gas-conduit. The said nipple b is screw-threaded externally and provided with a ring 0, adapted to be screwed up and down and to be secured in any desired position by a screwed lock ring or nut d, as shown. The said 'ring 0 carries an inverted step-cone f, with peripheral orifices or air-inlets e' e e in the successively widening reaches between the steps, the inlets 6 being in the reach of least diameter, the inlets e in the reach of next largest diameter, and the inlets e in the final reach with largest diameter of all, thus bringing one peripheral series of air-inlets beneath the base of each hood. The top of the said inverted step-cone is fitted with a funnel-shaped extension or hood h, joining at its upper end the mixing-tube g. Upon the steps of the air-inlet cone f are seated unattached hoods h 72. of which the latter or uppermost one has the largest opening or airpassage at top. The first circumferential row of air-inlets e is therefore situated between the ring 0 and the lowest hood h, the second row of inlets e is between base of hood h and base of, hood h and the third row 6 is between base of hood 72. and base of funnelhood 7:. leading to the mixing-chamber. The gas delivered by the nozzle a draws air in through the inlets e 6 a which then mixes with the gas in the mixing-tube g, whereupon the mixture issues from and burns at the top of the burner-head i with a dark non-lightgiving flame, as is well known. If it is found that too much air is supplied, (the inverse not being possible with the proportions adopted,) the entire structure, except nozzle 0'. and nipple b, is screwed down upon the latter until the space between the nozzle a and the first hood h has been sufficiently reduced to produce a better radiated light from the incandescent body heated by the flame.

In Fig. 2 of the drawings the burner has been so far screwed downward as to close the air-passage between CL and h. The burner may, however, be screwed down still further, if required, so as to reduce also the air-passage between it and k it being immaterial that thereby the hood h is lifted off its seat.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with the nozzle a and the nipple b supporting said nozzle, of the inverted stepped cone adjustable longitudinally of said nipple, and provided with peripheral airinlets arranged in a plurality of series, each series being located between successive steps of said cone, the hoods h, k seated upon said steps, and above said openings, the mixingtube g and the hood h connecting said mixing-tube with the top of said cone.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

' WILHELM SCHAEFER.
