PLANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,145, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed February 12, 1902. Serial No. 93,684. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD RAwsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Moscow, in the county of Latah and State of Idaho, have invented a new andImproved Planer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to woodworking machinery; and its object is to provide a new and improved planer which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and more especially designed for reducing timber to any desired thickness and width and arranged to permit the operator to shift the side cutter-heads independent one of the other while the machine is running.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a` plan view of the same with part broken out. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a ratchet device for the carriage-shifting device; and Fig. 6 is an end view of the same, parts being broken out.
The improved planer is mounted on a suitably-constructed frame A, supporting the feed-table B and carrying bearings for the shaft C' of the main cutter-head C, extending transversely a suitable distance above the table B, as plainly indicated in Fig. l. This main cutter-head C serves to reduce the timber throughout its width to a desired thickness, and in order to trim the side edges of the timber to a desired width I provide side cutter-heads D and D', adaptedfto be moved independently in a transverse direction according to the width of the timber to be dressed.
The timber is fed past the cutter-heads C, D, and D' by sets of feed-rollers E and E', of which the set of feed-rollers E is arranged in rear of the cutter-heads, and the other set E' is arranged inthe front of the cutter-head C.
When it is desired to use the machine for trimming two pieces of timber at the same time, I provide the longitudinally-extending guide-rails F and F', held transversely adjustable on the top of the feed-table B, the guiderail F bearing in conjunction with the main cutter-head C and the side cutter-head D, while the other guide-rail F' bears in conjunction With the main cutter-head C and the other side cutter-head D'. The side cutterheads D and D' are secured on the upper ends of spindles G and G', respectively, journaled in bearings H and II', attached to carriages I and I', respectively, mounted to slide independently one of the other on transverse guideways A', forming part of the main frame A.
Each of the carriages I and I is provided with a bracket I2, extending upward through a transverse slot in the feed-table B, and on the upper ends of the brackets l2 are secured the short guide-rails F2 and F8 for guiding the timber from the cutter-heads D and D'.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the cutter-heads D and D' are adjusted transversely by moving the carriages I and I' on the transverse guideways A' then the guide-rails F2 and F3 move with the cutterheads, so as to at all times stand in the proper position relative to the cutter-heads D and D'.
Each of the spindles G G' is provided with a pulley G2, connected byfa belt with a pulley G3, secured on a transverse shaft G4, journaled in suitable bearings in the main frame A and connected by pulleys and a belt with other machinery for imparting a rotary motion to the said shaft G4.
The carriages I and I are adapted to be e shifted transversely and independently one of the other, and for this purpose a shifting device is provided for each of the carriages, each shifting device being under complete control of the operator, and thel Shifting devices being alike in construction it suffices to describe but one in detail.
A longitudinally-extending shaft J is journaled at its rear end in the corresponding carriage I or I', and its front end is journaled in the carriage K, mounted to slide trans- IOO riages K K and I I' are connected with each other by stay-rods X. On the front end of each shaft J is secured a crank-arm J' or a power-ratchet W of any approved construction, (see Figs. 5 and 6,) under the control of the operator, for turning the shaft Whenever it is desired to shift the corresponding carriage I or I', as hereinafter more fully described.
On each shaft J are secured the gear- Wheels J 2 and J 3, in mesh with transverse racks J4 and J5, secured to or forming part of the main frame A, so that when the shaft J is turned the gear-wheels J2 and J3 roll off on the racks and in doing so cause a transverse slide of the carriages I K or I' K. In order to securely lock each carriage I or I' in place after the desired adjustment is made, I provide a screw-rod L, extending longitudinally from one carriage K to the other carriage I or I', and the front end of each screw-rod L is provided with a square offset L' for receiving a crank-arm to turn the screw-rod, so as to screw its rear end in the carriage I or I' against the bearing A' to lock the carriages in place. An additional locking device is provided for each set of carriages I K and I' K, and this locking device consists of a shaft N, mounted to turnvand to slide longitudinally in the corresponding set of carriages. On the rear end of the shaft N is secured an arm O, adapted to engage one of a series of apertures O', formed in the corresponding carriage I or I', as plainlyindicated in Fig. 4, and the said shaft N is pressed bya spring N', so as to normally hold the arm O in engagement with the corresponding aperture O'. extreme front end of the shaftN is fulcrumed a cam-lever P, abutting against the outer face of the corresponding carriage K, the said cam-lever P serving to slide the shaft N forwardly against the tension of the spring N' to Withdraw the arm O from the aperture and to allow the operator to then turn the shaft N so as to bring the arm O in alinement With another aperture O' after the corresponding carriage I or I' and its carriage K have been shifted.
Each of the outer carriages K is provided with a pointer K', indicating on a graduation K2, arranged on the rear edge of the feed-table B, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, so that the operator is enabled to readily shift the carriages and the cutter-heads D and D' to a desired position, it being understood that the apertures O' for engagement by the arms O are so arranged relative to the graduations K2 that When the pointer K' stands on a graduationmark the arm O is adapted to engage the aperture O'.
It is understood that the machine can be used as a planer for trimming single pieces of timber, and in this case the guide-rails F and F' are removed, and the machine is capablo of trimming timber of considerable v width.
When the rails F and F are in position, then two pieces of timber can be fed simultaneously through the machine at one time, and also While the machine is running the operator is enabled to shift any one of the cutter-heads D or D' transversely for trimming timber of a dierent Width without disturbing the other cutter-head or stopping the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A planer provided with a side cutterhead, a carriage mounted to slide transversely and carrying the bearings for the shaft of the said cutter-head, a second carriage mounted to slide transversely and connected with the first-named carriage, a shaft journaled in the said carriages, gear-Wheels on the said shaft, and xed racks in mesh With the said gear- Wheels, as set forth. 2. A planer provided with a side cutterhead, a carriage mounted to slide transversely and carrying'the bearings for the shaft of the said cutter-head, a second carriage mounted to slide transversely, a shaft journaled in the said carriages, gear-wheels on the said shaft, fixed racks in mesh with the said gear-wheels, a locking device for the said carriages comprising a shaft mounted to turn and to slide longitudinally in the said carriages, an arm on the said shaft for entering one of a series of apertures in one of the carriages, and a cam-lever for imparting a sliding and turning movement tothe said shaft, as set forth.

A planer provided with a side cutterhead, a carriage mounted to slide transversely and carrying the bearings for the shaft of the said cutter-head, a second carriage mounted to slide transversely, a shaft journaled in the said carriages, gear-Wheels on the said shaft, fixed racks in mesh With the said gear-Wheels, a locking device for the said carriages comprising a shaft mounted to turn and to slide longitudinally in the said carriages, an arm on the said shaft for entering one of a series of apertures in one of the carriages, a camlever for imparting a sliding and turning movement to the said shaft, and a spring pressing the said sliding and turning shaft, as set forth.

A planer provided With a side cutterhead, a carriage mounted to slide transversely and carrying the bearings for the shaft of the said cutter-head, a second carriage mounted to slide transversely, a shaft journaled in thev said carriages, gear-Wheels on the said shaft, Xed racks in mesh with the said gear-Wheels, a locking device for the said carriages comprising a shaft mounted to turn and to slide longitudinally in the said carriages, an arm on the said shaft for entering one of a series of apertures in one of the carriages, a camlever for imparting a sliding and turning loo IIO
movement to the said shaft, and apointeron one of the carriages, adapted to indicate on a fixed graduation, as set forth.
5. In a planer, the combination with a supporting-frame, carriages mounted to slide transversely of the fra me and connected with each other, a cutter-head mounted in one carriage and means for operating the said carriages in unison, of a shaft mounted to turn xo and slide in the carriages and provided at one end With an arm adapted to engage an aperture in one of the carriages, and means for operating the said shaft, as set forth.
