Urrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SVEN BRUNAU, OF KOPING, SWVEDEN.
JOINT-TIGHTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,012, dated December 2, 1902.
Original application filed October 9, 1901, Serial No. 73,093. Divided and this application filed May '7, 1902. Serial No. 106,266. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SVENBRUNAU, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Koping, Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Joint-Tightening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my application, Serial No. 78,093, filed by me October 9, 1901, patented June 3, 1902, No. 701,536, and relates to the device for securing a tight joint between the hub of the pump-wheel and its casing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of an electric fire-engine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the tightening device which forms my said invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The said electric fire-engine is identical with that fully shown and described in my aforesaid patent.
A is the frame carried on wheels B. The engine is supported by brackets C, secured to the exterior casing D and to frame A. WVithin the casing is an electric motor, the armature E of which is mounted on the shaft F. Said shaft also carries the centrifugal pump-wheel G. The chamber which incloses the pump is separated from the chamber inclosing the motor by a partition H. In the head I of the pump-chamber are formed suitable tubnlar projections for the attachment of the suction and delivery pipes K L. In order to fill the chamber and suction-pipe with Water on starting the pump, an opening is provided in the upper part of the casing, which opening is closed by the plate M and fastening-screw N. The motor-terminals connect with any suitable form of circuit-breaker arranged in the box 0 above the motor and operated by hand-wheel O. The feeder-wires communicate with binding-posts P, and said posts connect through wires Q with the motor. ential recess R is provided, which communicates by pipe S with the pressure-chamber of the pump and is thus kept filled with water.
Referring now more particularly to the In order to cool the motor, a oircumfe tightening device, Fig. 3, in the partition H is formed an elongated bearing T, through which the shaft F passes. Said shaft is reduced in diameter within said hearing, as shown, and receives a sleeve U, which sleeve extends beyond said bearing and into a recess Vin the hub X of the pump-wheel. One face of said hub meets the face of bearing T, and between said faces may be introduced a friction-ring \V, of metal. On the other side the hub X is extended and forms a closed cylinder Y, which receives the end of shaft F. Hub-cylinder Y is received in a cylindrical recess Z, formed in the head I. Beyond said recess and closing the same is a lug A, having a screw-cap B, through which lug and cap passes the set-screw 0, provided with locking-nut D. The hub-cylinder Y extends somewhat beyond the end of shaft F, so that it may be moved longitudinally on said shaft. Said cylinder and shaft are connected by the key E, which enters and has play in a slot F in said cylinder. The shaft-bearing is supplied with oil by means of the pipe G, leading from an oil-cup I through the sleeve U. Surplus oil from said sleeve is drained off by the pipe H.
In operation by means of the set-screw C the hub X is forced against the friction-ring and bearing T. A close joint is thus formed which can be constantly tightened to compensate for wear without the use of any packing or stuffing-box. This is of especial advantage in fire-engines, where owing to possible long periods of non-employment packings are apt to get dry, and in the present case do not tighten, and so enable the suction apparatus to draw in air.
The tightening device above described is always ready for service so long as the oilsupply to the sleeve is maintained.
I claim- 1. In a tightening device, the combination with a chamber, an elongated bearing eX- tending into said chamber at one side, of a shaft mounted in said bearing, a wheel on the shaft within said chamber and abutting at one side against the end of said bearing, and adjusting means to move the wheel up to the bearing and tighten the joint.
2. In a joint-tightening device, the c01nbi nation of a shaft, a bearing, the said shaft being reduced in diameter over a portion of its length included within said bearing, a sleeve on said reduced portion of said shaft and protruding beyond said bearing, a wheel on said shaft having one face of its body portion against the end of said bearing and a recess in said face to receive the protruding end of said sleeve, and means for forcing said wheel against said sleeve and bearing, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the shaft-bearing, the said shaft being reduced in diameter over a portion of its length included within said bearing, a sleeve on said reduced portion of said shaft, and protruding beyond said bearing, a wheel on said shaft having a hub and disposed with one face of said hub against the end of said bearing; the said hub having in said face a recess to receive the protruding end of said sleeve, and extended on the opposite side to form a closed cylinder receiving and connected to the shaft F and capable of longitudinal adjustment on said shaft, substantially as described.
4. The combination in atightening device, with a chamber, a shaft-bearing in one side of the chamber and a closed recess in its 0pposite side, of a shaft mounted in said hearing, a wheel on the shaft provided at one side with an extended hollow hub entering said closed recess and at the opposite side abutting on said bearing and there provided with an annular recess, a sleeve on the shaft within said shaft-bearing and entering said annular recess, and a set-screw extending into the first-named recess and bearing against the end of said hollow hub.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SVEN BRUNAU.
