UTTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT YVIGHTON MONORIEFF, OF NEWPORT PAGNELL, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR SPINNING AND DOUBLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,933, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed February 11, 1902. Serial No. 93,622- (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Wrcnron MON- CRIEFF, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, residing at Newport Pagnell, in the county of Buckingham, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Spinning and Doubling, (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, No. 13,860, said application bearing date the 8th of July, 1901; in Germany, dated April 5, 1902; in Austria, dated July 28, 1902; in Hungary, dated August 9, 1902; in Switzerland, dated July 26, 1902; in France, dated July 30, 1902; in Belgium, dated July 30, 1902, and in Denmark, dated July 26, 1902,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for spinning and doubling, and has for its object to cause the yarn to be wound upon the spindle-blade (or upon the tube or bobbin) in a very speedy and even manner and without the risk of ballooning and greasing of the rings or soiling of the yarn, while, furthermore, the yarn is subjected to less strain than with ring-frames and the utilization of finer yarn for spinning rendered possible.
In order that this my said invention may be the more readily understood and carried into practical effect, reference is hereby made to the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevational view, partly in section, of a rotating spindle provided with the twisting-disk in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 being a side view thereof, also partly in section, and showing a modification of the twisting-disk.
In the drawings, (t represents the blade of the spinning or doubling spindle, which spindle is rotatably mounted in a socket b in the spindle-rail b in any suitable manner, such spindle being driven positively by a band or the like passing around the wharve c in the usual well-known manner.
On the blade a of the spindle or on an externally-parallel removable tube or singlehead'ed bobbin ct, placed on and fixed to re volve with the said spindle, I mount a wooden or metal twisting-disk d, such disk being bushed with wood, cork, felt, or other suitable material to minimize friction and prevent soiling. The said twisting-disk d is fitted to revolve freely on the blade, tube, or bobbin aforesaid.
From the twisting-disk (1 one or more arms d project upward to a height corresponding to the greatest length of copping taper required, such arms being given an outward inclination toward their upper ends. In lieu of the said arms d I may employ an upwardlyprojectiug rim 6, such rim being outwardly inclined or beveled upon its inner periphery from the lower toward the upper end.
The arms d may be bent into eyes (1 at their upper extremities for the yarn passing through, or detachable hooks (1 or the yarn may be fixed to such arms or to the upper edge of the said rim 6.
The twisting-disk d is preferably given a truncated-cone shape, the largest diameter of such cone being lowermost and arranged to rest upon the upper surface of the coppingrail f, through an opening in which the spindle-blade (and tube or bobbin, if the latter be employed) passes, or the said lower end of the twisting-disk may rest upon a leather, felt, or other washer g, interposed between such twisting-disk and the surface of the copping-rail, such washer being either loose or attached to either the said disk or copping' rail.
Temper-bands h are provided for obtaining the necessary tension of the yarn being wound and for preventing the twisting-disk d rising off the copping-rail, such temperbands or drag-cords being arranged to press against the conical surface of the said twistingdisk by means of weights or suitable springs. (Not shown.)
The tube or bobbin (1 is preferably provided with an out-wardly-projecting top flange a such tube or bobbin being formed of metal, wood, or other suitable material, or of wood or the like incased with metal.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The yarn is brought down from the rollers in the usual manner and passed through the eyes or their equivalents upon the arms or disk of the twisting-disk around the spindle-blade or the tube or bobbin, according to the nature of the work being performed. At starting the copping-rail is set being performed, as aforesaid, the said disk being caused to lag or travel at a slower speed than said spindle. In this manner the yarn is wound on the spindle-blade, tube, or bobbin in a rapid and even manner.
The coppingrail works in the ordinary manner, rising and falling, say, one and onehalf inches, or the length of the tapered portion of the cop, while at the same time it is lowered a very small distance after each traverse, thus gradually forming any length of cop the spindle is equal to. The coppingrail is continually working up and down for a short travel and has also a very slow motion bodily upward at the end of each short travel.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1 In apparatus for spinning and doubling, the combination with a positively driven spindle; of a spindle-rail; bearings in said spindle-rail in which said spindle is mounted; a suitably-actuated copping-rail; a twistingdisk having a truncated-cone shape of which the lowest part is greatest in diameter, such disk being loosely mounted on said spindleblade and having its lower side in frictional contact with the said copping-rail and being provided with an upwardly-projecting rim having at its upper end hooks for the yarn passing through onto the spindle-blade, said rim being outwardly inclined toward its upper end; and the drag-cords arranged to press against the conical surface of the said twisting-disk to obtain the necessary tension of the yarn and to prevent said twisting-disk rising off the copping-rail, substantially as specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
