APPARATUS FOR COATING METALLIC ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 714,697', dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed August 26,1902. Serial No. 121,069. (No model.)
`the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to apparatus for coating metallic articlessuch as boxes, pipes, and the like-and has for its object to provide means whereby a uniform coating of paint or Vsimilar material may be produced on such articles in a short time for the purpose of protecting such articles against the iniuence of the weather, of acids, and other injurious substances.
The invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
An'example of my invention is given in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved apparatus with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to thespecic construction shown, but the scope of the invention is indicated in the appended claims.
As shown, the apparatus comprises a base a, upon which rests a support h, preferably .mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, so
that the articles carried by said support may be brought to any convenient position. A tubular support f is located centrally-that is, in the direction of the axis about which the plate or table b rotates-and this support i's provided with a screw-threaded portion upon which is loosely movable an arm c, which may be held in any position desired `by means of nuts p. In the outer ends of the arm o are adapted to slide vertically the rods cl of plungersor holders d, which may be provided with an elastic facing, such as a leather facing, at the bottom. The upper portions of the rods d are screw-threaded and are engaged by nuts e, provided with handles, whereby they may be turned relatively to the arm c, while a vertical movement of said nuts is prevented in any suitable manner. To hold the nuts c in position after adjustment, I may employ check-nuts e. The trunnion b', which serves to journal the table or support b, is hollow, as shown, and is provided with a partition s, which divides the interior of the tru nnion into two chambers. The upper chamber communicates with the tubular support f, at the top of which is a stufng-box Z, connected with a pipe t for supplying a heating agent, preferably steam. With the upper chamber of the trunnion b' also communicate pipes g having val ves o and leading to nozzles g',which are lo* cated above the table or support h, the latter being preferably provided with depressions b2. IIhe nozzles g may, as shown, consist simply of a piece of perforated pipe. From the depres sions b2 pipes h lead to the loWer chamber of the trnnnion b', the connection being controlled by valves o. The lower chamber of the trunnion b' further communicates with a pipe q, a stuffing-box k being provided where this pipe enters the trunnion, and this outletpipe q is preferably led through a receptacle m and is formed with a heating-coil q in said receptacle. This receptacle is adapted to contain the paint or other liquid with which the metallic articles are to be coated.
The articles to be treated are received between the plate or table b and the plungers d. Preferably washers n are placed on the table o to engage the lower edges of the articles. I have shown tapering boxes u, which, as represented, are placed in the apparatus upside down; but it will be understood that the same apparatus may be used to receive and treat articles open at both ends-such as, for instance, pipes-in which case the plun gers d would close the upper ends of the articles. In operation, the articles having been placed on the support b and fastened thereon by the nuts e and plungers d, steam or some other heating agent is admitted through the pipe t, the hollow standard f, the upper chamber of the trunnion b', and pipes g, with their nozzles g', into the interior of the articles. The articles then become heated and expand. The steam or other heating agent escapes through the pipes h and q and heats the paint or other coating substance which is in the receptacle m. While the articles are hot the,`
hot coating substance is applied on the outrule, one coating will be sufficient.
side of the articles in any suitable manner, as by means of a brush, and, if desired, this operation may be repeated, although, as a By the use of the Valves 0 I am enabled to admit the steam to both articles at the same time or to one of them only, as desired. I consider it best to. rst admit steam only to one article, then to coat this article exteriorly as described, and then to shut off steam from this article and allow it to pass into the other article. As soon as steam is shut off the cooling of the article and of the coating will cause'the coating to solidify, and when the operation is completed the coating will be found to be uniformly applied and its consistency will be like that of rubber or asphalt. I have ascertained that a coating thus applied protects the surface of the article efficiently against the action of the atmosphere andalso against stronger influences, as the attack by acids or brine. The procedure hereinbefore described does not take much time, as the cooling which takes place after the shutting off of the steam requiresno more than two or three minutes.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a support or base, atable mounted to turn thereon, a nozzle carried by the table, and means for holding an article on the table in such position that the nozzle will be within the article.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a base or support, a table mounted to turn on said support, a nozzle carried by the table and means for holding an article in position on the table.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a support, of a table mounted to turn thereon and having a holor channel connected with the other chamber and leading to the said table, and means for holding an article on the table.
4. The combination of a table having a hollow portion divided into two chambers, anozzle and a supply pipe or channel for a heating agent connected with one of said chambers, an outlet pipe or channel connected with the other chamber, and means for holding an article on the table adjacent to the nozzle and to one end of the outlet-channel.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a table provided with a hollow portion divided into two chambers, a supply pipe or channel for a heating agent connected with one of said chambers, a nozzle arranged adjacent to the table and connected with the same chamber, a discharge channel or pipe connected with the table and with the other chamber, a vessel for containing paint or other coating material, and an outlet-channel leading from the last-named chamber through the said vessel.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the support or base, of a table carried thereby and provided with a vertical trunnion about which it is adapted to rotate, said trunnion being hollow and being divided into two chambers, a tubular standard connected with the upper chamber of the trunnion, means adjustably carried by said standard for holding an article between said means and the table, a nozzle carried by the table and in communication with the upper cham ber of the trunnion, and a discharge pipe or channel connected with the table and leading to the lower chamber of the trunnion.
ln witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEF HRONECK.
