Description

l Nrrnn CHARLES E. ADAIR, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNORl TO EVAN J. JONES AND WILLIAM E. JONES, CONSTITUTING THE FIRM OF EVAN J. JONES rb CO., OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CHICKEN-BROODER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,654, dated December 2, 1902. Application iiled July 17,1902. Serial No. 116,002, (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ADAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Broeders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
1o This invention relates to broeders in which young chickens hatched out of incubatore are 'kept during the early stages of their growth; and the invention has for its object to provide a broeder or broeder-box which I5 can be warmed by a lamp and kept at an even temperature and which is of such construction as to provide for a proper circulation of warm air therein, so as to insure the requisite ventilation without too much loss zo of heat.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l is a longitudinal sectionof my improved chickenbrooder, and Fig. 2 an end view thereof.
The improved brooder comprises a casing z5 A, which may be of any suitable material, but which will preferably be of wood. The casing or box A is divided into upper and lower parts by the door B, the upper part or chamber D being the brooder-chamber and 3c the lower part being divided into the lampchamber O and the air-inlet chamber C. The heating-lamp E is located in the chamber Cbeneath a vertical due or drum F, opening at its top into a horizontal` heating-drum 3 5 G. Secured in the top wall of the heatingdrum F is asmallpipe g, extending nearly to the bottom of the said drum. Surrounding the vertical heating drum or flue F between the door B and the drum G is an annular 4o wall H, aiording an annular air-space or heating-chamber j' between the ue F and the said annular wall H, this annular airspace or chamber communicating with the airinlet chamber O', which latter is provided with suitable inlet opening or openings c, and the said wall H is provided near its top with suitable egress-openings h, communicating with the broeder-chamber D. The end walls of the broeder-chamber D are provided near the bottom of said chamber and at points removed from the said heating drum or due F with egress-openings b, communicating with flues or pipes I at the ends of the brooderbox.
From the above-described construction it will be obvious that the heated air and products of combustion from the lamp E will pass upward through the flue F and strike the top of the heating-drum G and after circulating about said drum will be drawn ontward therefrom near the bottom of the chamber thereof through the outlet-pipe g. The air from the inlet-chamber O will be gently warmed in the annular air-heating chamber f and will pass upward into the brooderchamber D through the openings h and after circulating through said chamber Vwill be drawn outward from points near the bottom of said chamber through the egress-openings b into the dues I. Owing to this construction, the brooder-chamber may be kept at the desired moderate temperature and will at all times be properly Ventilated by the circulation of warm air therethrough, but without unnecessary loss of heat. To keep all parts of the brooder-chamber at the same temperature as nearly as possible, the ceiling of the lamp-chamber O is preferably provided with a non-conducting lining c', of asbestos or other suitable non-combustible or non-inflammable material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a brooder; the combination with the casing A, of a broeder-chamber D in the upper part thereof, a lamp-chamber O and an airinlet chamber C' in the lower partthereof, a vertical flue or vertical drum 'F above the lamp-chamber, a horizontal heating-drum G into which the said vertical flue or drum opens, and which horizontal heating-drum is provided with an outlet-pipe extending down near to the bottom of the chamber thereof,
the lannular wall H surounding the said vertical drum or `flue F, to form the annular heating-Chambersaid Wall H being provided near its top with openings h communicating With the said brooder-chalnber, and the said brooder-chamber being provided nem' its bottom, at points removed from the said vertical heating Hue or drum, with the egressopenings b, and exit-fines I into which the said egress-openings b open.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature v in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. ADAIR. Witnesses:
