SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 714,013, dated November 18, 1902.

Beit known that I, SAMUEL J. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gallatin, in the county of Daviess and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Neck-Yoke, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of thisinvention is to providea neck-yoke having novel simple details of construction which adapt it for very efficient service, enable the proper connection of the improved device with neck -yoke bars of slightly-different diameters, render the connection between the pole of a vehicle and the neck-yoke yielding in two directions, and adapt the contact of the neck-yoke ring to avoid an injurious abrasion of the finished surface of a vehicle-pole with which it is engaged.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafterdescribed,and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement applied upon a neck-yoke barand a carriage-pole. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View substantially on the line 2 2 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a detached rear view of the neckyoke seen in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2.
In carrying into eect the features of the invention, 4 and 5 respectively represent the upper and lower portions of the two-part clipband, which whenconnected together afford a clasp for an attachment of the neck-yoke complete upon the yoke-bar 6, that may with advantage be rounded, as shown in Fig. l, where a central portion of the neck-yoke bar is represented.
The two sections 4 5 are concaved on their inner surfaces to facilitate their clamping engagement with the neck-yoke bar 6, and to effect such an engagement the sections 4 5 are respectively provided with ears 4fL 5a, that project from their rear edges at their centers, said ears being oppositely perforated for the reception of a clamping-bolt 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said bolt being provided with a Serial No. 116,508. (No model.)

At the forward edges of the clip-band sections 4 5 two iianges 4b 5b are forwardly extended, these similar flanges, which are of greater area than that of the ears 4a 5u, having central perforations a therein, through which a bolt 8, having a head 8b, is inserted and adapted for clamping adjustment by the engagement therewith of a nut 8, so as to secure the two-part clip-band upon the neckyoke bar and also clamp said band upon other parts, as will be explained.
The pole 9 may be the tongue of a carriage or other vehicle whereupon an appliance of that kind is employed, the body of the pole being rounded and tapered somewhat toward the free end, as usual. Upon the pole 9 a coupling-ring lO is loosely mounted, and from the body of said ring a flange l0 projects at one end thereof, said flange being preferably shaped to simulate a horseshoe, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The opening in the coupling-ring l0 is elongated in an upward direction to permit it to have rocking movement on the pole, and upon the normal upper side of the ring 10 a pad 10b is formed that trends upward and rearward beyond the flange 10a, so that this rearwardly-extended end portion of the pad 10b may be introduced between the fianges 4b 5b, the pad having a perforation that registers with the perforations a, in said flanges when these parts of the neckyoke are assembled.
An essential feature of the improvement consists in the provision of the preferably leather cushion-washer 11, that is oblong in form, has sufficient thickness to render it effective in service, and is apertured, as at b, nearly circularly to adapt it to pass over the bod-y of the pole 9, whereon it ts closely. The upper portion 11a of the cushion-washer l1 is bent rearward and upward, so that it may be inserted between the pad 10b and the flange 5b, forming the lower section 5 of the two-part clip-band, the bolt 8 passing upwardly therethrough.
An integral tongue 11b is formed on the upper portion 11 of the cushion-washer 11, so as to become a portion of the upper edge of the aperture b, and to adapt it for proper engagement with the pole 9 said tongue is bent forwardly, the forward portion thereof being held secured upon a corresponding por- ICO tion of the pad 10b by a screw-bolt 12 and nut 12a thereon, so that the tongue will bear upon the upper surface of the pole. The perforation in the ange 5b is preferably formed angularly, and the body of the bolt 8 near its head 8b is correspondingly shaped to fit therein, so that the nut 8L may be adjusted to bear upon the upper surface of the flange 4b with a pressure that will prevent a too-free rocking movement of the clip-band upon the pad 10b when the device is in service.
Preferably a socketed ferrule 9'1 is fitted and secured upon the tip end of the pole 9, said ferrule being furnished with an inclined abutment-flange 9b, the ferrule being a wellknown provision for reinforcing and protecting the free end of a carriage-pole.
A clamping-plate 13 is provided to coact with the peripheral liange 10 on the couplingrng 10, said plate having a horseshoe form that corresponds with that of the flange 10'. The clamping-plate 13 is adjustably held upon the fiange 10 by screw-bolts 14 and nuts 14 thereon, and, as shown in Fig. 2, the clamping-plate 13 is drawn forcibly against the cushion-washer 11 by said bolts and nuts, which arrangement of parts disposes the washer between the flange 10 and plate 13, so that the edge of the opening in the cushion-washer will closely embrace the .ferrule 12 when the plate 13 is engaged with the inclined abutment-flange 12a and receives support therefrom, as indicated in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the provision of the twopart clip-band formed of the concaved pieces 4 5, held together by the ears 4 5u thereon, engaged by the bolt 7, and the forwardly-extended flanges 4b 5, that embrace the pad 10b and the upper portion 11 of the cushionwasher 11 and are held clamped thereon by The bolt 8 and nut 8, adapts said band to receive graduated compression upon a neckyoke bar 6, so that the band will not slip on the bar and yet a lateral rocking movement of the latter will be permitted.
lt will be observed in Figs. 1 and 3 that the parts 4 5 of the clip-band are strengthened by exterior ribs o, that are integrally formed thereon near their transverse centers, and that the flattened extensions of the ribs are formed on the flanges 4b 5b, serving as Washers for the nuts on the clamping-bolts 7 8.
As the cushion-washer 11 is slightly yielding it will be evident that its close engagement with the socketed ferrule 12 will prevent the neck-yoke from rattling on the poletip and yet permit it to have rocking and sliding movement thereon sufficient to aord the necessary freedom in operation, and as the cushion-washer is preferably of leather no injury to the pole will result from such movements.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Aneck-yoke,comprisingacoupling-ring adapted to slide and rock freely on a vehiclepole, and having a pad projected from its upper side over one end, a cushion-washer of slightly-pliable material held on the couplingring at one end thereof said Washer tting closely upon the pole, and having an integral tongue engaged by the pad, and a clip-band for a neck-yoke bar secured on the pad projection so as to rock with the coupling-ring and press the tongue of the washer upon the vehicle-pole.
2. A neck-yoke, comprisingacoupling-ring formed with a peripheral flange at one end disposed at an angle to the bore of the ring, said coupling-ring being adapted to slide on a vehicle-pole, a clamping-plate held adjustably on the peripheral iange oppositely from the body of the ring, a slightly-yieldingcushion-washer clamped between the plate and liange, having an aperture the defining edge of which bears closely upon the pole, a tongue formed in said apertures, a pad on the upper side of the coupling-ring extended from one edge, the tongue engaging the inner side of said pad, and a clip-band clamped on the pad.
3. A neck-yoke comprising a two-part clipband having ears at like edges of said parts and ianges at opposite edges thereof, a bolt connecting the ears and a bolt connecting the danges, said bolts and nuts thereon serving to hold the clip-band clasped upon a neckyoke bar, a coupling-ring loosely mounted upon a Vehicle-pole and formed with a peripheral flange at one end, a pad projected upward and rearward from said liange, a clamping-plate, and an apertured cushion-Washer of slightly-yielding material clamped between the flange and plate, said washer having a tongue bearing upon a vehicle-pole which occupies the aperture in the cushion-washer, an upper portion of said washer being held between the flanges of the clip-band together with the pad of the coupling-ring, by the nut and bolt that clamp these flanges toward each other.
4. In a device of the character described, a coupling-ring comprising a band having an oblong opening, a peripheral ange on one end of the ring, a clamping-plate mating the fiange, a cushion-washer formed of leather and apertured to fit closely upon a vehiclepole, said washer having a tongue that'bears upon the upper side of the pole when the Washer is mounted thereon, and means for clamping the cushion-washer upon the peripheral flange.
