DRAFT-SPRING YOKE CONNECTION FOR DRAW-BARS.
SPECIFIGATIOM forming part of Letters lPatent No. 713,627, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed August 26,1901. Serial No. 73,286- (No model.)
T 00% whom, it may concern: vention and in order to provide for a pivotal Be it known that I, RICHARD D. GALLA- connection between the draw-bar and yoke GHER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, rewithout sacrificing the strength of the considing at New York, in the county of New nection I provide cap-plates B, which fit over York and State of New York, have invented the projections A, said cap-plates being held 55;
certain new and useful Improvements in in position by bolts or rivets O, passing Draft- Spring Yoke Connections for Drawthrough one of the holes provided in the end Bars; and I do hereby declare the following of the draw-bar and having their heads to be a full, clear, and exact description of brought down flush with the surface of the the same, reference being had to the accom cap-plates. The axis of the pivotal connec- 6o panying drawings, forming a part of this tion is coincident with the other hole in the specification, and to the letters of reference draw-bar, and it will be understood that either marked thereon. hole may be so utilized. Consequently the for-- This invention has for its object to provide ward ends of the cap-plates B are formed on I5 a connection between the draft-spring yoke a radius with said axis as a center. The yoke 65 or strap and the draw-bar of a car-coupler or strap D has its ends D bentinwardly, and which will permit of the utilization of drawthe bearing-surfaces of the hooks so formed bars of ordinary construction and provide for are curved to fit the forward ends or hearinga pivotal action of the draft-spring yoke or surfaces of the caps B, as well illustrated in strap, whereby the draw-bar may swing lat- Figs. 1 and 2. Thimbles are provided which surround the The invention consists in certain novel deends of said bolt and are formed integral with tails of construction and combinations and or seated in the capplates themselves,where- 75 arrangements of parts, all as will be now deby a more extended bearing-surface is affordscribed, and pointed out particularly in the ed and additional strength secured. Where 5o rivets. In accordance with my present ina pivotal connection is desired it is only nec- 10o essary to furnish cap-plates and the improved form of yoke, although even the latter element may in some instances be dispensed with and the ordinary yoke employed, although it is desirable that the curved bearing-surfaces should be provided in order to prevent excessive wear and to provide an extended surface for taking up the strains incident to the use of draft-gear.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the draw-bar having the projections at top and bottom, the capplates united thereto by a through-bolt and having another bolt-opening passing therethrough, the forward ends of said cap-plates being formed on a radius with said last-mentioned bolt-hole as a center, of a yoke embracing said cap-plates and having its forward ends fitted to said curved surfaces, a through-bolt passing through said last-mentioned aperture and the yoke to form a pivotal connection, and thimbles or ferrules proj ecting outwardly from the cap-plates and surrounding the bolt; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a draw-bar having projections at top and bottom at the rear end, cap-plates surrounding said projections and secured in place by a through-bolt having its ends or heads made flush with the outer faces of the cap-plates, the forward ends of said cap-plates being formed on a radius with a second bolt-hole as a center and a bolt passing through said last-mention ed hole, of thimbles independent of said cap-plates held in position by said bolt, and a yoke having its forward ends hooked and curved to engage the forward ends of the cap-plates, said yoke being retained in position by the cap-plates, thimbles and through-bolts; substantially as described.
