UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BEATTY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,383, dated November 11, 1902.
Application filed January 21, 1902. Serial No. 90,598. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in stoves and ranges and similar heating apparatus whereby complete incineration of garbage and the like is permitted without disturbing the burning fuel in the fire-box and without causing obnoxious gases to pass into the room in which the heating apparatus is located.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Apractical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvements as applied to a range. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2.
The range A, on which the improvement is applied, is provided with a firebox B, having a grate 0, below which is arranged an inclined screen D, so that the ashes and cinders dropping through the grate O and falling onto the screen D are separated from each other and delivered, respectively, into the receptacles E and F, arranged in the lower portion of the range.
The rear wall B of the fire-box B is provided with vertically-disposed rows of openings B leading into an incineration-chamber G, forming part of the range A and adapted to receive a vessel H in the form of a pail or the like containing the garbage to be burned, the said receptacle being somewhat smaller in size than the interior of the chamber G, so that the heat passing through the openings 13 into the said chamber G can completely circulate around the vessel H to thoroughly heat the same, and thereby incinerate the garbage contained therein.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bottom of the pail His preferably provided with an oifset H to hold the bottom of the vessel a distance from the bottom of the chamber G to form aspace for the passage of the gases. The chamber G is provided with a removable cover G to allow insertion or removal of the vessel H, and the said chamber is connected by apipeI with the smoke-fine J of the range, so that the gases in the said chamber pass into the smoke-stack and to the chimney, and consequently do not penetrate into the room in which the range is located.
The openings B previously referred to, are inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the fire-box B, so that the heat and gases can readily pass through the said openings into the chamber Gr.
By the above-described construction garbage and the like can be readily incinerated and the gases issuing therefrom effectually prevented from escaping into the room in which the stove or range is located.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A stove or range having a fire-box, an incineration-chamber at one end of the fire-box and in communication therewith, the said chamber being adapted to receive a vessel containing the garbage to be incinerated, the wall between the fire-box and the said chamber having vertical rows of inclined openings for the passage of the heat from the fire-box to the chamber, the openings being inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the fire-box, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD BEATTY.
