SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,788, dated November 4, 1902.

T0 at whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. GOODWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 3137 Euclid avenue, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsyl Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fabric-Trim niing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machinery for trimming fabric, and particularly to the work required in the manufacture of underwear, which requires pieces of fabric to be folded and trimmed in particular shapes and sizes suitable for trimming garments.
The object of my invention is to construct a machine which is adapted to the above purpose and which is simple in construction and operation, a machine which is compact in form, and in which the possibility of injury to the operator is lessened by the trimming-arm having a very small amount of motion.
A further object of myinvention is to regulate the feeding-rolls so that the fabric will be at rest during the trimming operation.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view looking toward the right end as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. at is a partial view, drawn to a smaller scale, showing the opposite end from that shown in Fig. 3.

In the drawings, A represents a bed-plate, to which is secured bearings B and B, in which are mounted the feed-rolls C and D. Between the bearings 13 and B extends a bar I), which is bolted to said bearings and has a projection 79, on'which is formed the bearing Fig. 5 is a perspective view "Serial No. 70.585. (No model.)
' with a similar gear-wheel O on the shaft 0 carrying the feed-r0110. The shaft C is provided with blocks 0 c, which are permitted to move vertically in grooves in the bearings B and BC, Springs 0 c are provided to depress the rollLO and hold it against the roll D.
They also permit said roll C-to be raised and separated from the roll D when'it is desired to have the rolls stop feeding the fabric. The mechanism for raising the roll 0 will be more fully described hereinafter. .Asfshown in Figs; 2,3, 5, a bevel gearwheel H on the shaft D imparts motion to a bevel gear-wheel I on the stud-shaft i! Said shaft has a sleeve 2', which is loosely mounted on the shaft 1), and also a depending arm i which is rigidly held in a bracket i secured to the bearing B. The said bracket is provided with a slot, through which passes the arm 2' to allow the sleeve andshaft i to be adjusted in case it is desired to increase or diminish the size of the bevel gear-wheel I.
A sprocket-wheel K is formed on the bevel gear-wheel I, over which passes a sprocketchain L. Said sprocket-chain is guided bya wheel 70, which is adjust-ably secured to the bed-plate of the machine by a slotted arm a.
On the sprocket-chain are enlarged links I,
which act upon the arm E secured by means of set-screws e e to the shaft E, which carries the trimming arm E. A spring M is attached to the end of the arm E and to the work-table N and tends to hold the arm E nearthe sprocket-chain and the trimmingarm E ina raised position. A stop n (more clearly shown inFig. 5) keeps the arm E from rising too high and the arm E from touching the low links of the sprocket-chain.
A spring P on the shaft E acts against a pinp on said shaft and the bearing 19 and tends to keep-the knife E on the trimmerarm E against the cutting-plate E which is secured to a table R on the bearings B and B, as shown in Fig. 5;
Mounted in bearings S S is a shaft T, which carries arms 25 and which engage the shaft G carrying the feed-roller O. The said shaft T is also provided with an arm 79, (shown in Fig. 6,) which is acted upon by aprojection E attached to the trimming arm E, and when said trimming-arm is depressed the feedroll 0 will be raised, so that the fabric will not be advanced toward the knife during the trimming operation.
The clutch mechanism is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. It consists of the loose pulley dand a pulley G, keyed to the shaft. The latter pulley is provided with a pawl g, which is engaged by the pin d, carried by the pulley d. Pivoted to-the bearing F is an arm U, which is controlled by the cam W on the shaft carrying the operating-handle W. In Fig. 4 the arm U is shown depressed, and the clutch is locked, so as to turn the shaft. By raising the handle W the arm U islifted bya spring a and acts on the surface g of the pawl g and depresses the pawl, which releases the pin d. A projection 21. on the arm U engages the stop 9 and stops the machine instantly.
On the work-plate N is secured a former Y, which folds over the edges of the fabric and guides the same into the feed-rolls. A guideplate Z is also provided to hold the fabric and guide the same to the trimming-knife. Sufficient space is left between the guide-plate Z and the table R to allow the fabric to pass freely between the same.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The fabric is started in the former Y. The machine is then started by forcing down the clutch-operating lever. The feed-rolls then engage the fabric and press the folded edges down tightly. The feed-rolls continue to advance the fabric until a high link on the sprocket-chain engages the arm E which operates the trimming-knife and at the same time raises the upper feeding-roll, which allows the fabric to stop during the trimming operation. The strips of fabric may be cut at any desired length by spacing the high links on the sprocket-chain at different distances apart, and the fabric may be folded in any desired shape without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of the feed-rolls, a trimming-arm, a knife on said trimming-arm, a fixed cuttingplate, a shaft having arms engaging one of said feed-rolls, an arm on said shaft adapted to be acted upon by said trimming-arm, and means of operating the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of the feed-rolls, bearings for said feed-rolls, a trimming-arm, a knife on the same, a fixed cutting-plate, a shaft extending parallel with said feed-rolls, arms on said shaft engaging one of the feed-rolls, an arm on said shaft adapted to be acted upon by said trimming arm, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of a guide for directing the fabric, feed-rolls, a trimming-arm, a sprocket-chain, one or more high links on the same, means of disengaging one of said feed-rolls by the action of said trimming-arm, a knife on said trim ming-arm and a fixed cutting-plate, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of hearings in which are mounted the feed-rolls, a cross-bar extending between said bearings, a projection on the same forming a bearing, a shaft, a trimming-arm, a spring on said shaft acting against the lastmentioned bearing and a pin on said shaft, an arm on said shaft, aspring attached to said arm and to the work-plate, and a stop projecting from the main bearing and acting on the outer end of the trimming-arm, substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of a bed-plate, bearingsin which are mounted the feed-rolls, a work-plate secured to said bearings, a guide or former attached to same, a table secured to said bearings, over which passes the fabric after it leaves the feed-rolls, a guide-plate to hold the fabric down on the last-mentioned table, a cuttingplate secured to said table, a trimming-arm and a knife on the same, substantially as described.
6. The combination, in a fabric-trimming machine, of bearings, a driving-shaft mounted in said bearings a feed-roll D on the same, a movable shaft, a feed-roll O on the same, gear-wheels, a clutch-wheel keyed to said driving-shaft, a loosely-mounted belt-pulley on the same, a pin carried by said belt-pulley, a pawl on the clutch-wheel engaging said pin, a stop on said clutch-wheel, an arm acting on said pawl and said stop, and means of operating said arm, substantially as described.
7. The combination in a fabric-trimming machine, of bearings, a driving-shaft mounted therein, a feed-ro1l mounted on said driving-shaft, a gear-wheel on said driving-shaft, an adjustable feed-roll, a shaft carrying the same, a gear-wheel on the latter shaft, a trimming-arm, a sprocket-chain, high links on the same engaging said trimming-arm, and bevel gear-wheels adapted to operate said sprocketchain, substantially as described.
8. The combination in a fabric-trimming machine, of bearings, a driving-shaft, feedrolls, a trimming-arm, bevel gear-wheels, a stud-shaft at right angles to said drivingshaft, a sleeve on said stud-shaft encircling the driving-shaft, an arm depending from said sleeve, a bracket engaging the same, a sprocket-wheel and a sprocket-chain operating said trimming-arm, substantially as described.
