HERBERT R. KEITHLEY, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK.
DOOR-FASTENING FOR FREIGHT-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,309, dated October 28. 1902.
Application filed April 25, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT R. KEITHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fastenings for Freight-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for operating the hopper-doors of hopper-bottom cars, and has for its object to provide a dooroperating mechanism which is very simple in construction and comparatively light in weight of metal andwhich is efficient and convenient in operation. 7
In the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets, Figure 1 isa fragmentary side elevation of a hopper-bottom car, showing one of the hoppers of the car provided with my improved door-operating mechanism, the door being shown closed. Fig. 2 is-a horizontal section in line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the door-operating mechanism, showing the door open. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
The body of the hopper-bottom car may be of any usual or desirable construction, that shown in the drawings having upright side walls A, end walls B, and a bottom frame (1, composed mainly of side sills 0, end and cross sills 0 c and horizontal center sills 0 The inclined outer bottom plates D and intermediate bottom plates E extend with their lower portions 01 6 below the bottom frame and have these lower portions connected below the bottom frame byv upright side walls f in the usual manner. The intermediate inclined bottom plate E is provided below the bottom frame with the usual discharge-opening, which is closed by a door G of any suitable construction. The door is connected at its upper end by hinges g to the intermediate bottom plate E, so that the door swings toward and from the lower end of the outer bottom plate D.
The mechanism for operating the door is constructed as follows: h represents a transverse rock-shaft, which is arranged beneath the lower portion of the outer bottom plate D and journaled in hearings or straps h, secured to said plate at the sides of the car.
Serial No. 104,690. (No model.)
I represents arms which are secured to the rock-shaft it, near the ends thereof, outside of the bearings 71/ and extending on each side of the car across the side of the hopper-tip and beyond the door when the latter is closed.
J represents a link which connects the free end of each rock-arm l with the door. This link is arranged on the inner side of the adjacent rock-arm I and connected with the latter by a pivot-bolt t' and with the door by a pivot-bolt 75, passing through a lug orhingestrap secured to the door, Fig. 2.
L represents a stop which is secured to the rock-shaft h on the outer side of the rockarm I and which has above the shaft a stopface Z, against which engages a locking dog or pawl M. The two dogs on opposite sides of the car are secured to a transverse rockshaft m, so that both can be operated simultaneously from either side of the car. The stops L are preferably formed with hubs Z, by which they are secured to the rockshaft h.
n represents stop-shoulders arranged on the sides of the hopper-tip in such a position that the rock-arms rests upon these shoulders when the door is closed, as represented in Fig. 1. These shoulders are preferably formed by castings, which are riveted to the hopper sides, as shown in the drawings.
0 represents stiffening-bars of any suitable form secured to the lower side of the lower portion of the outer bottom plate D.
The rock-shaft h, to which the rock-arms I are secured, and the rock-shaft m, to which the dogs M are secured, are preferably made square throughout or partly for convenience in attaching the arms I and stops L to the shaft h and the dogs M to the shaft m, and so that a wrench or crank can be applied to the ends of said shafts.
When the door is closed, as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the rock-arms I rest upon the stop-shoulders n at the sides of the hopper-tip, the links J stand in line with the rockarms, and the dogsM bear against the faces of the stops L, whereby the door is prevented from opening under the pressure of the load. For opening the door the dogs M are swung up out of the way of the stops L, when the load pressing on the door will open the same to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.
, tending beyond said door when the latter is closed, a link connecting the free end of said rock-arm with said door, and means whereby said rock-arm is held in position for holding said door closed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a hopper-bottom, a hinged door arranged 011 one side of the same, a rock-arm fulcru med on the opposite side of the bottom and extending beyond said door when the latter is closed, a link connecting the free end of said rock-arm with said door, a stop connected with said rock-arm, and a locking device engaging said stop for holding the door closed, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a hopper-bottom, a hinged door arranged on one side of the same, a rock-arm fulcru med on the opposite side of the bottom and extending beyond said door when the latter is closed, a link connecting the free end of said rock-arm with said door, a rock-shaft to which said rock-arm is secured, a stop secured to said rock-shaft, and a locking-dog adapted to engage said stop for holding the door closed, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a hopper-bottom, a hinged door arranged on one side of the same, a rock-shaft fulcrumed on the opposite side of the bottom, rock-arms secured to the ends of said rock-shaft and extending beyond said door when the latter is closed, links connecting the free ends of said rock-arms with said door, a stop secured to said rock-shaft, a dog- 'shaft journaled on said bottom, and adog secured to said shaft and adapted to engage said stop for holding the door closed, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a hopper-bottom, a hinged door arranged on one side of the same, a rock-arm fulcrumed on the opposite side of the bottom and extending beyond said door when the latter is closed, a link connecting the free end of said rock-arm with said door, a stop-shoulder on the hopper-bottom for limiting the downward movement of said rockarm, and means whereby said rock-arm is held in position for holding said door closed, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of a hopper-bottom, a hinged door arranged on one side of the same, a door-operating rock-shaft arranged on the opposite side of the bottom, rock-arms secured to said shaft and extending beyond said door, links connecting the free ends of said rockarms with said door, stops connected with said door-operating rock-shaft, a locking rockshaft arranged near the latter, and lockingdogs secured to said locking rock-shaft and adapted to engage said stops for holding the door closed, substantially as set forth.
fitness my hand. this 23d day of April,1902.
