swlToH-TH Rwl NG DE-VICE.
SPECIFICATION fbi-ming part of Letters Patent No. 712,305, dated october 2s, 1902. Application tiled January Z3, 19Z- Serial No. 90,966. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALFRED JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Puritan,in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Throwing Devices, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in switch-throwing-de-- vices, and relates more particularly to that class used for railways and the like.
The present invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the switchrails may be automatically thrown to any de'- sired position and returned to their former position when the train has passed over the switch.
A still further object of my present invention is to provide a switch-throwing device of the above-described class that will be eX- tremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly ecient in its operation; furthermore, to provide novel means secured to the carl that will automatically trip the switch-operating mechanism and return the` track and siding, showing the switch with my improved mechanism secured'thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the switch-stand, showing a portion of my mechanism secured in position. Fig. 3 is a rear fragmentary perspective view of a car carrying my improved tripping means. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the tripping means placed in proper position for operating the switch mechanism. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the trip-lever, the latter detached yfrom the car.
In the drawings vthe reference-numeral 1 represents the main` track and 2 the siding;
3 represents the removable rails, which are Asecured together by the cross-bar 4. The
outer end of the cross-bar 4 is pivotally con- Anected to the outer end of the inner arm of the bell-crank lever 5, which is fulcrumed at 6 to the base-block 7, secured upon the tie 8. The rigid arm 9 of the bell-crank lever is pivoted at 10 to operating-rods 11 and 12, the other end of the operating-rod 1l being pivv,otally connected at 14 to an arm 15, secured *to the shaft 16, this shaft being rotatably mounted in the boss 17V of a base-plate 18, carrying the switch-stand 19, through which the upper end of the shaft 16 extends, the latter carrying at its upper end a V-shaped lever-arm 20, the end Lof the shaft 13 being pivotally secured at 21 to an arm 22 of the shaft 23, which is likewise mounted upon the base-plate 24 and secured in the switch-stand 25. The trip-arm is slightly wedge-shaped and is adaptedto engage one of the arms of the V-shaped lever-arms 2O and 26 as the car passesthe arms, thereby imparting movement to the shaft, which transmits movement to the movable switch-rails, as will be readily seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
To the rear of the car is attached a chain 2S by any suitable means, said chain passing `around to the side of the car, where the tripping-lever 29 is hinged, as indicated at 30,
said tripping-lever carrying the sideilanges 31, which are adapted to contact with the V- shaped lover-arms 20 for operating the switch.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.` y.
Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
In a switch-operating device, thecombination with the main track and movable rails, of a bar connected to each of the movable rails, a bell-crank lever comprising two arms integral with each other and disposed at right angles and pivoted at the junction of said IOO arms to one side c-f the track, one of said arms being pivoted at its end to one end of said bar and extending at a substantial right angle thereto, operating-rods extending in opposite directions but in substantial alinement with each other having their adjacent ends pivoted to the other arm of the bell-crank at a point common to each, switch-stands 1ocated at the other ends of the operating-rods, Vertical shafts journaled in the switch-stands, arms rigidly connected to the shafts and pivoted to the other ends of the said operatingrods, said last-named arms extending at a substantial right angle to said operatingrods, and a V-shaped lever-arm mounted on the upper end of each of said shafts.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALFRED JOHNSON. Witnesses:
