MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,211, dated October 28, 1902. Application filed February 11, 1902." Serial No. 93,514.. on model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDUARD STRAUCH, a
subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, V,
residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a just, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in making metal castings; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide an apparatus wherein castings in iron, steel, copper, brass, 860., may be made in large numbers and from which the castings when completed may be readily removed. These objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in' the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a top view, partly in section, to illustrate a mold made according to and embodying my said invention; and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
In said drawings, A designates the mold, made of iron or other suitable material, consisting of two halves or parts B and O. The part B is provided at its opposite sides with forked projections D D, and the part 0 is similarly provided with smaller forked projections E E, in which are pivoted the ends of the screws F F, provided at their free ends with hand-wheels G G, which are adapted to bear against the outer surfaces of the forked projections D D, whereby to hold said parts B C firmly united. The part 0 is provided at its rear with a hollow hub or receptacle H, having at one side a forked projection I.
J denotes a plunger disposed within the re-. ceptacleH and having its inner surface coinciding with the contour of the interior of the mold contiguous thereto and adapted to form, together with the portions of the mold contiguous thereto, one of said halves or parts of the mold, said plunger being provided with a stem J, which extends through the receptacle H and its projecting end provided with a slot a, and K denotes a lever extending through the slot at in the stem J and having one end pivoted within the forked projection I and its free end provided with a handle K.
L denotes a spring disposed upon the stem J intermediate the outer surface of the receptacle H and the lever K, whereby to hold the plunger J duly in position within the receptacle H.
M denotes theinterior of the mold, into which the metal to be cast is poured through the opening I) in the top of the part- 0, and 0 denotes a vent for the escape of the gases from the interior of the mold.
The operation of the apparatus .is as follows: The parts B and C 'are first firmly united by means of the screws F F and handwheels G G, and thereupon the metal is.
poured into the mold through the opening 5 in'the top thereof. As soon as the metal has cooled sufliciently to permit of its removal. from the mold the same is opened by partly unscrewing the hand-wheels G G and swinging the screws outward beyond the ends of the forked projections D D. Thereupon the plunger J is forced inward by means of the lever K and the casting thereby ejected from the mold. To continue the casting, the operation above described is simply repeated.
It will of course be understood that I do not wish to limit orconfine myself to the form of the mold, or the form and location of the plunger within the mold, or the means for actuating said plunger, as these must necessarily be varied with the shapes and sizes of the castings to be made.
Without, therefore, limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A mold comprising twoseparable parts each provided at its opposite sides with forked projections, screws pivotally secured within the forked projections on one of said parts, handwheels on said screws adapted to contact with the forked projections of the other part, a receptacle provided in one of said parts,a forked projection arranged on the outer surface of said receptacle, a plunger disposed within said receptacle having a slotted stem extending through said receptacle, a lever extend- Signed at the city of New York, in the ing through the slot in said plunger-stem and county and State of New York, this 8th day pivotally secured at one of its ends within of February, 1902. the forked projection on said receptacle, and I EDUARD STRAUOH.
5 a spring disposed on said plunger-stem inter- Witnesses:
mediate the lever and the surface of said re- GEO. H. ROSENBLATT, ceptacle, substantially as specified. O. AUGUSTUS DIETERICH.
