E. C, C. KELLOGG, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THEODORE HOYT.
Letters Patent No. 71,180, dated November 19, 1867.
IMPROVED BURGLAR-ALA RM.
din fitlgehule marsh in iltflgrse fishers haunt ant mating and hi therma- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, E. C, G. Kunnoee, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- 4 Figure 1 is a plan view of a burglar-alarm, constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in a toggle-brace, so combined with an arm connected with the striking mechanism of a burglar-alarm as to efi'ectually hold the said mechanism in position when wound up for use, and to furnish an eflicient means whereby the same may be tripped or started, to sound the alarm when acted upon by the operations of the burglar or other person.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to-the drawings. 4
Within a rectangular or other suitable case, A, is the striking mechanism of the alarm, which may consist, as shown in dotted outline in fig. 1,of a spur-wheel, B, rotated, when the device is in operation, by a suitable spring in the direction of the arrow marked'thereon in the figure aforesaid, and gearing into a pinion attached to the shaft a of the escape-wheel C, the latter operating the anchor attached to the spindle c of the hammer D, which, when thus operated, strikes the bell E to sound the alarm, as hereinafter further set forth. Secured upon the upper extremity of .the shaft a* of the spur-wheel B, outside of the case A, is an arm, d, extending at right angles thereto, and having formed in one side, near the outer extremity thereof, a notch or cavity, as shown at a. Provided upon the adjacent surface of the case A, at a suitable distance from the end of the arm d, when the latter is placed in the position shown in fig. 1, is an upright spur, c, in the inner side of which is formed a notch or recess, 6, corresponding in character to that provided in the extremity of the arm 01, as just 'set forth. F represents a toggle-brace, composed of two bars fg, pivoted as shown at a, one of the said bars being furnished 'with a lip, d, at one edge, so arranged that when the two bars are placed in line with each other, as shown in the drawing, the said lip will prevent the bars from turning upon the pivot c in one direction. The same bar has attached to it, at the same side thereof as that at which thc lip d.is formed, the tripping-cord G, which is also attached to or connected with the door or window which it is designed to protect, by sounding the alarm when an attempt is made to open the same. I
When thedevice or apparatus is wound up for use, the toggle-brace, in the straight condition shown in the drawings, is placed witlrthe two pointed and opposite outer ends of its two bars, one in the recess a of the arm d, and the other in the similar recess of the spur e, in which position it holds the arm 11, and consequentlythe striking or sounding mechanism connected therewith in a stationary condition, until a pull upon the trippingcord, caused by the movement of the window or door with which the said cord is connected, causes the two bars to turn upon their connecting-pivot, or, in other words, to be doubled toward each other, thus releasing the arm (1, whereupon the spur-wheel B, being rotated by its spring, hereinbefore mentioned, actuatos the hammer to strike the bell and sound the alarm. Inasmuch as that side or edge of the toggle-brace, to wnioh the trippingcord is attached, may be turned in any direction around the longitudinal axis of the said brace, when in its straight condition, it follows that the aforesaid tripping-cord may lie carried inany desired direction to the door or window, without impairing its efliciency in tripping or operating the said toggle-brace, as hereinbefore fully set forth. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The toggle-brace, in combination with the arm d, connected with the striking mechanism of a burglar-alarm, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
