UNITED STATES ATENT' ERICE.
WALTER E. MURPHY, or MURDocK, MINNESOTA.
MACHINE FOR CUTTI NG` LEATHER STRAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 71 1,518, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed April 14, 1902. Serial No. 102,733. (No model.)
To a/ZI/ whom t may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, WALTER F. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Murdock, in the county of Swift and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Leather Straps, of which the following is a specification'.
My inventionrelates to improvements in strap-cutting machines. Its Objectis to provide means for cutting straps into desired lengths; and to this end it consists ofa suitable base-plate, a knife-bar so pivoted as dto cut straps into lengths when laid across said base, and an adjustable gage on said base for measuring the length of the straps to be cut.
My invention further consists of the following mechanism, as described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 -is an end view looking at the front of the strap-cutting machine.
In the drawings let A represent the baseplate, which is provided with the transverse portion 2. The supports 3 and 4 are formed on the transverse portion of the base-plate, and the knife-bar B is pivoted at 5 in said supports. This knife-bar is curved at 6 and recessed. at 7 to receive the cutting-blade 8, which is fastened by means of the bolt 29. The outer end of the knife-bar is formed with the eye 9 for the purpose of fastening the cord 10, connected to a foot-pedal (not shown) or other suitable means for depressing the knife-bar. The spring 11 is fastened to the base by means of the screw 12. The free end of the spring works against the lower side of the knife-bar and is adapted normally to raise the bar in superior position, as shown in Fig. 1. The combination guide and stop 13 for the knife-bar is fastened to the base by means of screws 14.- and is slotted at 16, so as to form the shoulders 15V for' guiding and regulatingrthe movement -of the knife-bar. The sections-Q and D of the base are fastened tothe vtransverse piece 2 by means of, the screws 1-7. The section C is provided with the vertical back 18 and the beveled edge 19 for the purpose of coacting with the cutting edge 2O of the blade when the knifevbar is depressed. The section D is slotted at 22 for receiving the bolt 23,.Which passes through ythe adjustable gage 24:. This gage is provided with the vertical surface 25 for the ends of the straps to abut against. The
and 27 for setting the gage when in use. The transverse portion2 of the base is slotted at 28 below 'the shoulder 19 for the knife to pass into.
In operation the gage is set in the desired position and the straps to be cut are laid lengthwise against the back 18, with their ends abutting against the gage 25. By depressingthe lever by means of the pedal the knife cuts lthe straps into the desired lengths.
Y Having described vmy invention, what I claim as new-,'andldesire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for cutting straps of leather into desired lengths 'consisting of abase, a knife-bar pivoted on said base, a knife fastened to said knife-bar, a slot in said base adapted to coact to cut the straps of leather,
a-spring for raising said knife-bar to superior position, a gage on said base against which the ends of the straps to be cut are adapted to abut, and means for adjusting said gage on said base.
2. A device of the class described consisting of a base having a transverse portion 2 and sections C and D secured thereto, a back on section C, a slot 22 in section D, 'a gage adjustable on said section D by means of a bolt passing through said slot, a knife-bar pivoted on the transverse portion 2, a knife secured to the free end of said bar, av slot-.in said base. forthe cutting edge of said knife to work in, a spring secured to said base and adapted to raise said knife-bar to superior position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER` E. MURPHY.
