ADJUSTABLE CLUMP-SOLE.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR STANDISH HARTRIOK, mounted constable of police,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Heyfield, in the State of Victoria, Austra lia, have invented an Improved Adjustable Clump-Sole for Footwear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a clump-sole for footwear which is inexpensive, inasmuch as it is made from a single strip, as 2, cut straight from a hide of leather or from a sheet of other suitable composite material, so that there is no waste. This strip is readily adjusted to the outer contour of the sole without cutting and trimming. It is lighter and more yielding to the foot than ordinary solid clump-soles and is, moreover, more comfortable and effectual than fillets attached to the center of the sole, inasmuch as it ailords a perfectly even tread for the foot and a more secure grip on the ground, besides being cheaper to manufacture.

To attain the desired objects, I cut a hide of leather or sheet of other suitable composite material (such as various gutta-percha or india rubber and cork compositions) into straight strips of the desired width and length, so that there shall be no waste, and these I coil (while preserving the shape or outer contour of a sole) and mold them so that they will retain the said peculiarities when removed from the mold.

Instead of being cut into strips and molded my improved adjustable clump-sole may be stamped out of the hide.

The accompanying drawing illustrates my clump-sole manufactured as described, and it will be seen that one edge of the strip composing the clump-sole is unbroken, so that when said clump-sole is applied to the sole of the shoe what constituted the sides and tip of said clump-sole will be unbroken, thereby bringing said sides and tip of said clump-sole flush or coincident with the corresponding portions of the shoe-sole, hence securing a neat finish.

The strips may be perforated, as at 3, for the reception of rivets, by which they may be secured to the sole, while the particular shape or conformation of my improved clump-sole insures unusual lateral fiexure and with the spaces between the coils of decreasing diameter will enable the person fitting them on to spring them one way or the other, so as to get a perfect fit flush with the outer contour of the sole without the use of a knifeor other paring instrument.

My improved clu m p-sole is of particularadvantage to railway guards and men following occupations where slipping would be dangerous, besides ordinary pedestrians, while on account of its easy application and adaptability it will be particularly handy on the battlefield, where quick repairs may be required.

My improved clumpsole can be applied with equal usefulness to either a new boot or a boot much worn, and in the latter case is therefore specially valuable to the poorer classes on account of its cheapness in construction, as it would enable considerable f urther wear to be obtained out of a boot which by reason of defects or wear of the upper would not be considered worth resoling in the ordinary manner.

The coiled strip 2 is shown as having wedgeshaped notches 4 situated at the bends of the coils of said strip, by virtue of which the proper amount of lateral flexibility of the sole is secured.

Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. An improved adjustable sole for footwear consisting of a coiled fiat strip of suitable material.

2. An improved adjustable sole for footwear consisting of a coiled fiat strip of suitable material having an unbroken edge.

3. An improved sole for footwear consisting of a coiled strip of suitable material, the coils being separated laterally and one edge of the strip being unbroken, the other edge thereof having notches.

4. An improved sole for footwear consisting of a coiled flat perforated strip, one edge of the strip being unbroken and the other edge being notched.

5. An improved sole for footwear consisting of a coiled fiat strip of suitable material lying in a single plane.
