TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM BETTS, of- Wharf Road, Middlesex county, England, have invented an Improvement in Metallic Capsules forBottles, etc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to those capsules which may be described as trademark capsules, and which are intended to prevent fraud by affording a guarantee of the geuuineness of the contents of the bottle covered by such a capsule, and by preventing the re-use of the name of the firm or their trade-mark, as, according to this invention, the capsule itself` serves the purpose of a label, which is not only clearly visible from the side of the bottle, but must necessarily be destroyed by the very act of opening the bottle.
In order to enable others to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner'of constructing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figurel is a sectional view of my improved capsule for bottles, etc., and
Figure 2 a view showing the capsule applied to the neck of a bottle.A
A is a capsule, of lead, tin, or other malleable metal, which, in the present instance, is of the' form shown -in the drawing. Upon any suitable part or .parts of the body of the 'capsule I produce, by the aid of type orsurface printing and gold-leaf` or otherfoil or metallic powder, the name of thel rm, with or without a special trade-mark or ornamentation. y j v One Inode of carrying out this invention consists intaking ordinary type or printing surfaces corresponding to the design to be printed on the capsule, and printing -the same on the capsule in gold-size, or other suitable adhesive material, after which I apply gold, silver, or other metal vleaf or lfoil, after the manner of ordinary gilding; or powdered metal or pigments may be applied over the size, andthe superfluous powder or leai` then removed, when the` name or trade-mark will be clearly visible on the capsule; or I take type or a printing. block, made the reverse to' ordinary type, andI apply gold-size, or other suitable adhesive preparation, to such printing surface. -I then pre-ss thereon a sheet `oi`foil, and from vthis sheet I transfer the impression to the side of the capsule by rubbing or pressing the foil, the flexibility or pliability'ol` the foilfacilitating the transferring of the size to the curved surfaceof the capsule. The gold' or other metallic foil, or powder or powdered pigment, is then to be applied to the capsule, when the name or device will appear clearly thereon; or, in lieu ol' metallic foil or powder, any suitable printing-ink, colored or not, may be employed; or the name or trademark may be produced by a stencilling process; or the letters and trade-mark may be stopped out of the'body of the capsule, when thelatter is colored, so as to yshow the name and design in plain metal, whilst the rest of tbe capsule is colored. These namesl and trade-marks may be produced, it desired, in two or more colors, by successive printings, whereby lthe elect of multicolored trade-marks will be obtained. In some cases the name and trade-mark, or name or trade-mark, may be embossed .or stamped on the body or side of the capsule.
Although this mode of producing trade-mark capsules is more particularly applicable to the long capsules employed in the champagne trade, it may obviously be employed for short capsules. In all cases where folds or overlaps are formed down the sides of the capsule, in applying them to a bottle-neck, care should .be taken that such folds or overlaps come, as nearly as practicable, equidistant on eachside of the device produced on.
the body of the capsule, whereby a. neater appearance will be obtained, and all interference with the words or design on the sides of the capsule will be obviated. v I I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A metallic capsule, constructed for application to the neck of a. bottle, as described, and on which atrademark or title is stamped or otherwise permanently imprinted, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W.v BETTS'.
