JOSEPH I-IOLBAOH, OF NEl/V YORK, N. Y.
BEER-BARREL-TAPPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '71 1,162, dated October 14, 1 902.
Application filed December 30, 1901, Serial No. 87,668. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI, JOSEPH HOLBACH, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Barrel-Tapping Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an efficient and convenient device for tapping a beer-barrel and drawing off the beer without injury to or loss or escape of the beer; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described an claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a sectional side view of a device showing my improvement and showing a part of one end of a beer barrel or keg and the operation of said device.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at ct a part of one end of a beer barrel or keg, and said beer barrel or keg is provided with the usual head o in which is secured a bung I), having in the top or outer end thereof a cavity or chamber N, which, as shown in the drawing, is slightly flared or enlarged at the top, but which may be cylindrical in form, if desired. I have also shown the usual draw-off tube 0, which is provided with the usual coupling and valve 0 near the upper end thereof, and a valve-ring 0 all of which are of the usual construction and are therefore not shown in detail or in section.
In the practice of my invention I provide a I Q the cap 6 and may be regulated by said cap.
The lower end of the tube dis provided with a collar f, which is screwed thereonto or secured thereon in any desired manner, and loosely mounted on said tube above said collar is a packing-ring g, of rubber, rubber and canvas, or other similar material, and above the packing-ring g is a sleeve h, which is also loosely movable on the tube (1.
The tube (1 is provided above the sleeve 71 with a screw-threaded portion 1', on which is mounted a correspondingly threaded collar or band j, having laterally-directed handles or armsj and by turning said band or collar by means of said handles or arms the sleeve h may be forced down wardly onto the packingring g, and said packing-ring may be forced to expand thereby, as will be readily understood.
The lower end of the tube 61 of the tapping device, together with the collar f, the packing-ring and the lower end of the sleeve h, is adapted to be inserted into the bung b, as clearly shown in the drawing, and in the operation of tappinga barrel the tapping device is inserted into the bung, as shown in the drawing, after which the tube a is inserted into the tapping device and the collar or band is screwed down onto the sleeve h,
which is forced down onto the packing-ring g, which is expanded so as to completely fill and close the chamber-in the bung b. The tube 0 is then forced downwardly, so as to knock out the bottom b of the bung, and the beer, which is under pressure, will flow out through said tube 0 in the usual manner.
The packing-ring g prevents any beer from escaping around the tapping device and securely closes the opening through the bung b, and this feature, together with the operative parts h and j, constitutes the chief element 0 elements of my invention.
The tapping device (1 is also provided at its upper end with an enlarged screw-threaded member 7a, in which is an annular chamber m, in the bottom of which is placed a packing-ring n similar to the packing-ring g, and over this ring is placed a vertically-movable sleeve 0, which is held in place by a cap 19, adapted to be screwed onto the screw-threaded member is and which is provided with lateral arms or handles q, and the operation of this device is practically the same as of that at the lower end of the tapping device, the packing-ring n being compressed by screwing down the cap 70, so as to completely close the space around the tube 0 and prevent the escape of beer through the tube d.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tapping device for beer barrels or kegs comprising a tube provided at its lower end with a collar, an elastic packing-ring mounted thereon above said collar, a sleeve mounted on said tube above said packing-ring and a screw-threaded collar or band mounted on said tube above said sleeve and adapted to be screwed down onto the said sleeve, said tube being also provided at its upper end with an enlarged screw-threaded portion, an elastic packing-ring placed therein, a sleeve mounted thereon over said ring and means for depressing said sleeve and said tube being also provided centrally with two branches, one of which serves as a pipe connection and the other of which is screw-threaded and provided with, a longitudinal groove and a screwthreaded cap the groove being designed to form a vent which is regulated by said cap, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tapping device for beer barrels or kegs comprising a tube provided at its lower end with a collar an elastic packing-ring mounted thereon above said collar, a sleeve mount ed on said tube above said packing-ring, and
a screw-threaded collar or band mounted on said tube above said sleeve and adapted to be screwed downwardly onto the said sleeve, said tube being also provided at its upper end with an enlarged screw-threaded portion, an elastic packing-ring placed therein, a sleeve mounted thereon over said ring and means for depressing said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
3. A tapping device for beer barrels or kegs comprising a main tube provided at its upper end with means for packing, a draw-off tube inserted thereinto and at its lower end with a collar, an elastic packing-ring mounted thereon above said collar, a sleeve mounted on said tube above said packing-ring and a screw-threaded collar or band mounted on said tube above said sleeve and adapted to be screwed down onto said sleeve, said main tube being also provided centrally with two branches, one of which serves as a pipe-coupling and the other as a vent, the last-named branch being screw-threaded and provided with a longitudinal groove and a screwthreaded cap, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of December, 1901.
JOSEPH HOLBAOH.
