SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,761, dated October 7, 1902.

To [LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. COOK, residing at Homer, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Governors for PowerEngines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in an automatic governor for power-engines such that when a certain speed is reached the exhaust-valve will be held open until the speed is decreased, as will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features of which will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
The drawing illustrates in end elevation a cylinder of a power-engine with my invention shown in connection therewith, the position of the exhaust-valve being shown in dotted lines.
A is the power-cylinder of a gas or gasolene engine. Exhaustyalve 1, shown in dotted lines as a puppet-valve controlled by spring 2 on the stem 3 thereof, which normally presses it to its seat, is opened at regular intervals by contact with cap a on the end of stem 3 of one arm a of lever 5, pivoted at 6, the other arm I) of which carries roller 8, adapted to be engaged by a tappet or cam 9 (shown in dotted lines) on the shaft 10, which is driven from the main driving-shaft of the engine. Bevel-gear 11 on the end of shaft drives bevel-gear 12, through which motion is communicated to the spindle 1 3 of a centrifugal governor 14:, of ordinary construction, having the spring 15 normally pressing down the lower collar thereof.
The foregoing parts are of well-known and usual construction, and further illustration or description of the operation of such parts will not be necessary to enable the invention to be understood by any one skilled in this art.
in connection with the lower collar or strap 7 of the centrifugal governor I use a cone 16, which is connected to move therewith. A latching-rod 18 is pivoted at 19 in suitable lugs, and the upper end d thereof carries an antifriction Wheel orroller 17, which is in position to be engaged by the cone 16 as said cone is moved upward on the spindle of the governor as the speed of the machine approaches a certain point, as will be well understood. Pin 21, which takes into a fixed part of the machine, passes through the arm (I of the rod 18, and between an adjustable cap 23 on the end of this pin and the said arm (1 spring 22 is located, the function of which is to keep the latching-rod in its normal position, as shown in the drawing, and to restore it to such position when it has been removed therefrom by the action of the cone 16 after said cone shall have returned to its normal position, as shown in the drawing. The other end a of this latching-rod is beveled at 25 to engage a notch 24: in the end of the arm I) of lever 5. This will only happen, as will be evident from the illustration, when the arm I) shall have been thrown back by the action of the tappet 9 on roller 8, at which time the exhaust-valve will be held open and when at the same time the arm 0 is thrown inward through the action of cone 16 upon wheel 17 of arm d.
The operation and advantages of this device will be apparent to those skilled in the art. At each revolution of the shaft 10 through tappet 9, roller 8, and arm I) the ex haust-valve of the engine is thrown open, thereby allowing free communication between the outside air and the power-cylinder. Under ordinary circumstances the spring .3 will restore the exhaust-valve to its closed position, so that upon the next stroke of the piston a combustible mixture of air and gas will be drawn into the cylinder and the nor-' mal operation of the engine will proceed as usual. However, if the engine has reached a certain predetermined limit of speed be yond what is desired the action of the centrifugal governor will raise the cone l6 and throw in the latching-rod, so that its arm 0 will be in a position to engage and hold the actuating-lever of the exhaust-valve after it shall have been thrown out by tappet 9. The exhaust-valve will then be held open during the next cycle and until the speed of the engine shall have slacken ed sufficiently to allow the pressure of cone 16 upon the latching-rod to be relieved and the latching-rod to return to its normal position.
The advantages of this device reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of installa tion, and in its efiiciency, which is due in a measure to the fact that the construction provides a direct frictionless connection between the governor and the exhaust-valve and permits of very close regulation of the speed of the engine.
It will be obvious that the parts may be made adjustable, so that contact between friction-roller l7 and the cone 16 may take place at any desired point. This may be done by making the friction-roller l7 adjustable on the rod or by providing an adjustable connection between cone 16 and strap 7, or in other ways, as will readily present themselves. By adjusting the tension of spring on cone 16, which will change the time of contact of cone 16 with roller 17, the speed may be varied as required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a power-engine, in combination, an exhaust-valve 1, having a stem 2, actuatinglever 5 adapted to engage said stem, roller 8 upon said lever adapted to be actuated by cam 9, connected to a shaft of the engine, a latching-rod 18, one end of which is adapted to engage and hold said actuating-lever, the other end of which carries a friction-roller 17, governor ll, cone 16 connected thereto, a spring 22 bearing against rod 18 to hold itin the path of said cone at certain positions thereof, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an automatic regulating device for power-engines, an exhaust-valve, a lever for opening said valve, means for actuating said lever at intervals, a pivoted latching-rod, one end of which is adapted to engage said lever, a conical surface adapted to engage the other end of said latching-rod, a governor for moving said conical surface, and means for adjusting said conical surface whereby contact between said conical surface and said latching-rod may occur when the engine has reached any predetermined speed.
3. In an automatic regulating device for power-engines, an exhaust-valve, a lever for opening said valve, means for actuating said lever at intervals, a latching-rod one end of which is adapted to engage said lever, a conical surface adapted to engage the other end of said rod, a governor for moving said conical surface, and means foradjusting the position of said latching-rod relatively to said conicalsurface wherebycontact therebetween may occur when the engine has reached any predetermined speed.
