UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IV. SI-IATTO, OF LORIMOR, IOWA.
SASH SUPPORT AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,720, d t d O t be '7, 1902.
Application filed August 15, 1901. Serial No. 72,119. (No model.)
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SHATTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorimor, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Window-Sash Support and Look, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple, strong, and durable support for vertically-sliding windows in such a manner that the upper and lower sashes can be moved independently and supported and locked at any point of elevation desired.
Heretofore a case adapted to be fixed to a window-jamb has had mating clamp members provided with eyes at one end and pivoted to the side walls of the case and the clamps extended out through openings in the case in such a manner that the case and clamps could be jointly handled; but in no instance have mating clamp members been provided with integral pivots and permanently connected with a straight fiat plate, as contemplated by my invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of a plate adapted for pivotally connecting mating clamps thereto and securing them to a window-jamb.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatical view of one of the clamp members adapted to be pivoted to the base-plate of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section, showing the clamping device connected with a rod and the mating clamps in their normal positions as required to hold fast to the rod. Fig. 4: is a detail view showing the manner of fastening and bracing the end of a rod fixed to the top of the upper sash in a window. Fig. 5 is an inside view of a window to which myinvention is applied as required for practical use and shows the upper sash lowered and the lower sash elevated and both sashes locked in their respective positions.
The letterA designates an oblong fiat metal base-plate of the clamp. It has conical perforations l) and b in its central portion to admit the pivotal ends of the clamping members to be inserted and bent laterally, as
shown in Fig. 3, and as required to retain the clamps securely connected with the plate and adapted for jointly handling the plate and clamps and also as required to facilitate fastening the complete clamping device to a window. 111 the end portions ofthe plate are apertures c and 0, adapted for extending screws therethrough for fastening the clamps to the window-frame, as shown in Fig. 5.
Clamp members d and d, consisting of flat oblong metal plates, are provided with extensions f at one end adapted to be passed through one of the conical perforations in the plate A and pivotally secured thereto by bending it laterally, as shown in Fig. 3. It is also provided with an aperture g, adapted for admitting a rod 71, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The clamp members are thus permanently, pivotally, and advantageously fastened to the base-plate.
The rod It is bent laterally at its top end and fixed to the top of the upper sash, as shown in Fig. 4, and the rod 71 is bent laterally at its lower end and fixed to the lower end of the lower sash, as shown in Fig. 5.
Both rods are thus made to extend parallel with the side rails of the slibable windowsashes in such a manner that they will extend through the coinciding apertures gin mating clamp members d.
A coil-spring m is placed on each rod and between the mating clamp members, as shown in Fig. 3, to normally press them apart and to bind fast to the rod as required to support and lock the sash to which the rod is fixed at any point of elevation desired.
A brace r is fixed to the upper sash and provided with a perforation at its free end portion, through which the rod h is extended downward, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Having thus described the purpose of my invention and its construction and application, its practical operation and utility will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7 An improved window-sash support andlock comprising a base-plate adapted to be fixed to a window-'jamb and provided with perforations that are enlarged on the under side of the plate, two mating clamp members having coinciding apertures for the passage of a rod and integral extensions at their ends passed through the perforations in the baseplate and then bent laterally to permanently and pivotally connect the clamp members with the base-plate, a rod extended through the apertures in the clamp members and a coil-spring on the rod, as shown and described for the purposes stated.
JAMES W. SHATTO. Witnesses:
