UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM DOVVNIE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO STIMISON CREDIT REGISTERCOMPANY, OF BATTLECREEK, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
PAPER-NLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,442, dated October 7, 1902. Application filed August 2'7l 1900. Renewed June 19, 1902. Serial No. 112.305. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern: y
Beitknown thatIVILLIAMDOWNIE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchv as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to paper-files especially designed for containing sales-slips used by retail merchants; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts here-- inafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact file adapted to receive sucoessive sales-slips containing the purchases of a customer, in which the arrangement is such as to confine the slips in place in such manner as to render the figures upon the slips plainly visible and to allow all of said slips to be readily removed from the file, or4 to enable one or more slips to be removed, if desired, and the remaining slips retained therein, and providing for the holding of all of the slips within the file by their edges, so as to enable them to be turned as leaves of a book.
The above object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Y Figure l is a perspective View of a file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the file and slips therein. Fig. 3 is a like section showing by dotted lines the manner of holding the slips at one margin thereof between the finger and the top flange of the file to enable the slips to be turned, so that any one of the slips may be selected and withdrawn from the file or the figures upon any of the slips readily examined. Fig. et is an enlarged plan View of the Iile. Fig. 5 is an edge view thereof.
Referring to the characters of reference, l 5o designates the file, which is shown as of rectangular shape and is preferably formed of thin sheet metal. The sides and ends of the file rise vertically from the bottom, forming a shallow tray. Crossing the top of the file longitudinally and extending from one side thereof onto the ends 2 is a top piece or projecting ledge 3, which extends over one niargin of the slips 4, contained in the file, and assists in retaining said slips in place. Also crossing the le longitudinally near the opposite side thereof is a strand 5, formed, preferably, of wire of suitable gage, Whose ends are secured to the opposite ends of the iile such distance from the side 6 thereof as to correspond with the ruled line 7 and said slip 4, which divides the tens from the hundreds in the figures Written upon said slips representing the price of the articles purchased.
In placing the slips in the file they are folded, so that their opposite edges may be entered under the ledge 3 and confining-strand 5, respectively, when as said slips straighten out their edges extend under said strand and ledge, so that they are held in place and are prevented from accidentally dropping out of the file. When the slips are in place within the file, the figures thereon at the right-hand margin thereof are not hidden or obscured by the strand 5 for the reason that the position of said strand is such as to lie between the columns of the figures, as shown in Fig. l.
Formed in the bottom 8 of the file is an aperture 9, which extends to and through the side lO of the iile, as shown in Fig. 5. Said aperture enables the finger to be passed through for the purpose of forcing the slips from the file and enables the slips Within the file to beheld between the nger and the ledge 3 when it is desired to turn or examine said slips without removing them, as shown in Fig. 3.
The ledge 3 and strand 5 so confine the slips within the iile as to cause them to lie ilat and straight, enabling the file containing the slips to be readily inserted in and Withdrawn from a suitable containing cabinet or pigeon-hole. (Not shown.)
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A file, comprising a bottom and vertical sides and ends rising from the bottom, and a strand crossing the file longitudinally adjacent to and/ approximately parallel with one of the sides of the lle, said strand being adapted to engage and confine the slips within said lile.
2. A file, comprising a bottom and vertical sides and ends rising from said bottom, an overhanging ledge projecting inwardly from one side of said le, and a strand crossing said le between said ledge and the opposite side thereof, said ledge and strand being adapted to engage the opposite margins of the slips and coniine said slips within the ile.
3. A le, comprising a bottom and vertical sides and ends rising from said bottom, and an overhanging ledge projecting inwardly from one of the sides of said le, the bottom of the file having an aperture therethrough directly below said ledge.
4. A le, comprising a receptacle in the form of a tray, having an overhanging ledge extending longitudinally ot' the receptacle and a small confining-strand also extending longitudinally of the receptacle and secured at its ends thereto, said ledge and strand being adapted to engage the opposite margins of the slips within the file. j
5. A tile, comprising a tray-like receptacle having a confining strip crossing the top thereof and having an aperture through the bottom directly in line with said confiningstrip, said aperture opening through the side of the file adjacent to said strip and means for engaging the opposite margins of the slips Within the le.
6. A le, comprising a receptacle having a strand crossing the le longitudinally between the ends thereof and above the bottom, a top piece projecting inwardly from the opposite side of said file, the bottom and side of the file adjacent to said top piece having an opening formed therein directly below said piece.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
