JOHN B. MELDRUM, or PATERSON, NEW, JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 71,034, dated November 19, 1867. I
IMPROVED rtooroctora AND GARPB'IING.
@112 .Stlgthnle ttftttth in in tlgtst' Zttttets 33mm not making part at tlgt same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOIINB; MELDRLM. of Paterson, in the county of Passuio, and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain newvand useful Improvements in Jute Floor-Cloth or Carpeting, made by printing or stamping in the colors 01' figures in aniline colors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I I v I take a suitable description of'jute-yarns, and bleach them to a white or whitish color by the use of chloride of lime and an alkali, or by other suitable modes. These yarns are woven into a cloth, and on this cloth I print or stamp, by means of blocks or rollers, certain colors, patterns, and designs of aniline colors, which are very bright and durable, or the yarns may be woven into 'cloth before bleaching, and this cloth, in its grey state, submittedto the bleaching process, and, vhen bleached, printed, stamped, or ornamented in. aniline colors, as above described, andthough I prefer the bleached material, the unbleached or grey may be used. The bleaching gives greater brilliancy and permanence to the colors and enables me to use a. greater variety of colors; it causes the coloring matter to strike more dceply into the texture of the cloth, as the fibre is opened up in the process of bleaching, and produces a. clothmore pliable and durable than that made without bleaching; but the.
unbleached material serves a good purpose. The printing of jute cloth in wood colors has been done, but these colors are perishable, and quickly fudeout, as they are laid or painted on, and not in, the cloth. Besides, they lack the brightness of the aniline colors. And whilst the bleached jute is preferable, as it makes a betterrelief or ground for the aniline colors, yet I do not restrict myself to its use alone, as I can use, and make a very good, cheap, and inerchanta-ble carpet out of the grey or unbleached jute cloth. I of course use such aniline colors as are made of that substance for the brightest portions of the cloth or carpet, and may use in addition to them such other colors, not procurable from that material, but claim only the use of aniline colors, whether used alone, or whether portions of the cloth or carpet'ar'e printed in other colors or-not.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as a new article of manufacture, is-
A jute floor-cloth or carpet printed with aniline colors, substantially as and for the purpose described.
