Description

- No. 709,988. Patented Sept. 30, I902.
' .1. B. KERR m. BURIAL CASE.

(No Mpdai.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. KERR, JR, OF'TORONTO, OHIO.
BURlAL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 709,988, dated September 30, 1902. Application filed February 16, 1902. Serial No. 94,176. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. KERR, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ronto, inthe countyof Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented a-new and useful Improvement in Burial-Gases,of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in burial-cases; and has for its object the provision of novel means to provide a device that will be practically indestructible and wherein the coffin is placed and securely retained.
The invention further contemplates to construct a case of the above-described character that will be extremely simplein construction,
strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use; furthermore, one that will prevent the grave sinking.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved case. Fig. 2is a perspective view showing one of the ends removed and the case partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the sides and ends of the case with the top removed therefrom.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the sides, which are formed in sections and carry upwardly-extending flange 2. The said sections are secured together by V- shaped tongues 3 and corresponding grooves 4 of the sections, thereby interlocking the sections forming the sides together. These sides carry inwardly-extending portions 5, which form a portion of the bottom of the burial-case. The said inwardly-extending portions carry inwardly-extending flange 6 for the reception of the bottom 7, which is likewise provided with flanges 8, which are seated upon the flanges 6.
The reference-numeral 9 represents the end of the case, which is preferably curved and carries a flange 10, corresponding with the flange 2. A cover 11 is arched and is seated against the flanges 2 and 10, said cover 11 carrying strengthening-ribs 12.
The burial-case may be constructed of any suitable material and when placed together will form a case that will be practically hermetically sealed.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved burial-case will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a burial-case,.the combination of sides formed in sections with upwardly-extending flanges carried by the sections, V-shaped tongues carried by the sides of the sections with corresponding grooves formed in the sides of the adjacent sections to receive said tongues,inwardly-extending portions carried by the lower ends of the sections with flanges carried by the ends of said portions, a flanged bottom engaging said flanges of the said por' tions, the end sections being curved, and a flanged arched cover provided with strengthening-ribs, the ends of the cover being seated against the flanges of the side sections, and the strengthening-ribs engaging the upper face of the side-section flanges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOHN B; KERR, JR. In presence of- Mrs. C. E. MILLER, PAUL KERR.
