JOSEPH SHAVER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SAN D-BLAST-CO NTRO LLI N G APPARATU Si.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,448, dated September 16, 1902.
Application tiled August 5, 1991. Renewed .Tuly 2,1902. Serial No. 114.132. (No model.)
To all whom it 7am/y concern.:
Be it known that I, JOSEPHSHAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improveniente in Sand-Blast-Controlling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Myinveution relates to improvements in that class of sand-blast-controllin g apparatus in which air under pressure is conducted to the sand-reservoir above the sand therein before passing to the discharge-duct, and pertains more especially to the means employed for controlling the escape of sand from a reservoir under air-pressurethrough one or more apertures or series of apertures into a sand-blast duct communicatingbetween said reservoir and the exterior through a hose and discharge-nozzle, whereby the escape of sand and air, which together form the sandblast, is controlled and a greater or less quantity of sand is mingled with a given Vvolume of com-` pressed air, as circumstances may require, and also to the means employed for conduct-y ing the compressed air from the supply to said sand-reservoir and air-controlling valve.
The construction of my invention is eX-.
C is an inlet air-pipe through which air under pressure is forced into the reservoir.
D is an air-controlling valve of ordinary construction. The pipe C, leading to the reservoir, is preferably run downwardly and upwardly, forming a U-shaped bend- E, which serves as a trap forsuch moisture as may have accumulated from the compressed air before it enters the sand-reservoir. p
F is an ordinary petcock through which the moisture may be drawn oit from the duct.
which is connected with `said plunger by the rod L, which rod operates through a stuffngbox M of ordinary construction. The short arm N of the lever K is fulcrumed to the link O, which link O is supported at its lower end from the bracket P, whichbracket isin turn supported from the coupling-collar R. The cou pling-collar R has threaded bearings on the upper end of the cylinder G, by which it is held in place in connection with the reservoir.` provided with a plurality of apertures S, arranged in series one above the other, as shown in Fig. l.
It will be understood that when the plunger J is at the lower extremity of its movement, as shown, all of said apertures S are The lowerend of the'cylinder G is closed and the escape of sand is prevented;
`its interior from the cylinder G.
U represents apertures formed through the upper end of the cylinder Gr for theescape of air therefrom, whereby a pressure of air is brought to bear upon the sand, thereby forcing the sand through the apertures s into the lower end of the cylinder beneath the plunger as the same is raised.
While the sand-blast produced through this device may be used for polishing meta-llic and other surfaces, the same is more especially adapted and is intended to be used for cutting and forming characters and orna- IOO mental figures in and polishing the surfaces of marble and other similar materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sand-blast-controlling device, the combination of an air-tight sand-receiving reservoir; a cylinder, provided at its lower end with a plurality of apertures through its vertical walls, extending longitudinally through said reservoir; an air-duct communieating from the source of pressure through the upper end of said cylinder with said sandreservoirabove the sand therein; a hose connected with the lower end of said cylinder; a vertically-moving hollow plunger, provided with apertures at its upper end, located within said cylinder, and adapted to control the passageof sand through said apertures; a rod communicating from said plunger with the exterior of said reservoir; and means for raising and lowering said plunger, and opening and closing said apertures, as s et forth.
2. In a sand-blast-controlling device, the combination of an air-tight sand-receiving reservoir, a cylinder, provided at its upper and lower ends with a plurality of apertures formed through its vertical walls; extending longitudinally through said reservoir and protruding, at its respective ends, through the ends of said reservoir; an air-duct communieating from a source of pressure with the upwardly-protruding end of said cylinder, a hose connected with the lower protruding end of said cylinder; a vertically-adjustable,
hollow plunger, provided with apertures at its upper end, located in said cylinder and adapted to control the passage of sand through said apertures; a rod communicating from said plunger through a stufng-box with the exterior of said reservoir; and a lever pivotally connected with the protruding end of said rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a sand-blast-controlling device, the combination of an air-tight sand-receiving reservoir; a cylinder, provided at its upper and lower ends with a plurality of apertures through its vertical walls, extending longitudinally through said reservoir; an airduct, provided with U-shaped bends (in the lower end of which is a petcock) connected with the upper end of said cylinder; a hose connected with the lower end of said cylinder; a vertically-moving, hollow plunger, provided with apertures at its upper end,`
located within said cylinder, and adapted to control the passage of sand through said apertures; a rod communicating from said plunger with the exterior of said reservoir; and means for raising and lowering said plunger, and opening and closing said apertures, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature inthe presence of two witnesses.
