SPECIFICATION forming pea ef Letters Patent No1 709,428, dated september `1e, 1902 f 'Application tied April s, 190i. sei-a1 No. 54,152. (No modas c To al?, 'wh/ouvrit may con/cern.' c c Be itknown thatI, FRANKLIN l. VARRING,
a citizen ofthe United'States,"residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State 5 of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAutom-atic Hydrocarbon-Feeders for Explosive-Engines; and I c do hereby declare `the `following to be a full, 9 clear, and exact description of the invention,
" `to such aswill enable others skilled `iu the art to which it appertains to malte andnse the same.
c This invention relates to gas or vapor en- .ines,sometimestermedfexplosive-engines,` and has specialreference toan improved feedc y, J quantitysuited to the workor load imposed Vzo upon the engine.
To this endthe invention contemplates an i l` oil-feeding device or valvedesigned to be as-` sociated with the suction supply-pipe of the i engine directly, or indirectly with such pipe .c z5 through the carbureter or other form of generator which may be utilized in connection g withthe engine and from which the gaseous or explosivemixture is drawn through the l c said suction supply-pipes. In this special use c 3c of thedevice or valve the same has in View the provisionofsimple 'and reliable means `.controllable by thesuelion of` the engine whereby thenecessary supply of hydrocarbon will be regulated'automatically according to "3,5 theload Linder which the engin@ iS Working' `A further object is to provide a construction of feeder or valve which under normal conditions willgremain completely closed to `cut oifthesupply of `hydrocarbon from `the ,i 4o'iengine or the carbureter associated therewith.
`With these and many other objects in view,
fwhich `will more readilyappear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the
` `same consists in the novel construction, com-` `f4.5 bination, and arrangement of parts hereinaftermore fully described, illustrated, and
` ,c claimed.
The Aessential features of theinvention are improvements is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which---` i Figure Iisan elevation showing the improvedA feeding device or valve applied for 53 use in the preferred way--namely, in connection with the generator or carbureter `for'the engine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the complete feeding device, or valve, :is it is sometimes termed.`
Like numerals of reference designate like and corresponding parts in `the several iigures of the drawings.
As already stated, the feeding device may be associated directly with the suction supply-pipe of an engine, or, in other words, with theair-supply pipe of that type of engines which during the action thereof draw in a mixtureof air and hydrocarbon, or the device'may be utilized in connection with the 7o carbureter or generator, which may be fitted to the suction supply-pipe of the engine. In either vof these adaptations of the feeding device the latter is necessarily included in the suction or draft of the engine, so that the same will be controllable by the said suction or draft. However, for purposes of illustration the feeding device or valve is shown in the drawings coupled directly to agenerator or carbureter l of the type in which the oil or 8c hydrocarbon is vaporized and mingled with the air,\vhich is drawn into the engine through the suction supply-pipe 2 thereof.` Of course the feeding device or valve will be applicable to any type of carbureter; but in the adaptathe same preferably being of an elongated cylindrical form. The said valve-casing 4 is `provided at a point intermediate the `ends thereof with an interior annular diaphragm 1.5, provided with a valve-seat opening 61, preferably beveled to register with the correspondingly-beveled portion of the feed valve or valve-disk 7carried by the reciprocatory IOO fcasing.
valve-stem 8, arranged longitudinally of the The said interior diaphragm 5 divides or separates the interior of the valvecasing into two separate chambers, designated, respectively, as the oil-supply chamber 8a and the vacuum cylinder or chamber 9, which latter cylinder or chamber is directly in communication withA the oil-delivery neck or port 3, and at `one end of the vacuum cylinder or chamber 9 the casing 4 is provided with-an end opening 10 and an inwardly-projecting flange 11, forming the said opening.
Within the Vaouumchamber or cylinder 9 there is slidably arranged a valve-actuating piston 12, snugly registering with the inner wall of the vacuum-chamber, so as to have a piston action exclusively, and the said piston is fitted on the valve-stem'S, contiguous to one end thereof, against a bearing-shoulder 13,provided thereon. Contiguous to said bearingshoulder the valve-stem'S is provided with a threaded portion, receiving a binding-nut '14 for detachably clamping the piston in place. The extremityfof the stem 8 adjacent to the piston and the fastening means therefor has connected thereto one end of a coiled retracting-spring 15, the other end of which spring is connected to a stationary angled supporting-bracket 16, which is rigidly fastened in any suitable manner directly to the casing 4 or to an equivalent xed support. The end of the stem 8 opposite the spring connection therewith is guided in its movement `within the guiding-bore 17 of the valve-stem` guide 18, constitutingra closing-head forone end ofthe valve-casini g, and the outer portion of whose bore is threaded at 19 to receive a stop-screw 20, longitudinally alined with the stem 8 and adjustable, so as to vary the amplitude of movement of the stem 8 as conditions may require.
The oil-supply chamber 8a at one side of the interior diaphragm 5 is formed with an inletport 21, with which is connected the supplypipe 22, leading to a storage-tank or other source of supply for the gasolene or other hydrocarbon.
' Under normal conditions'when the engine .tion is necessarily caused within the vacuumchamber 9, thereby permitting. the atmosphere to exert a pressure upon the outer side of the Valve-actuating piston 12, thus moving such piston inward and causing an unseating of the valve 7. This valve is of materially smaller area than the piston 12, so as 4not to interfere with this operation, and immediately upon being opened away from the Vseat 6 a supply of hydrocarbon is permitted toA i'low through the chamber 9 and the neck or port 3 into the carbureter or generator. When the suction or draft from the engine ceases during the period when the engine is notl drawing in the gaseous y mixture, the spring 15 will retract and eect a closing of the valve. Thus the operation is entirely automatic and the supply of oil is practically regulated according to the suction or draft of the engine.
From the foregoing it is thought that the "construction, operation, 'and many advantages of the herein-described feeding device or valve will be readily understood without further description, and it will also be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu-re by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a carbureter of an engine, of a casing having separate interior oil-supply and vacuum chambers, the latter having connectionV with the carbureter and having also an end opening,` a valve-stem movable in said casing, a valve carried by said stem and` controlling a port between the' oil-supply and vacuum chambers, a piston on tracting-spring connected with the said stem, and a guide for the opposite end of the valvestem, all substantially as and for the purpose specified. f
2. A feeding device of the class described comprising a valve-casin g having separate insaid stem within the vacuum-chamber, a re- ICO terior oil-supply and vacuum chambers, the
oilsupply chamber havingan inlet-port, and the vacuum-chamber having an oil-delivery port, and also having an end opening and a guard-Hangs, a longitudinally-movable valvestem carrying a feed-valve controlling communication between the two chambers, a valve-actuating piston ttedv upon the stem and working within the vacuum-chamber, a
