TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KING, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Latch for Doors, etc., and IV do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskilled. in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates toalatoh' for doors, etc., which consists in a novel connection between the latch and handle or knob-spindle. In theaccompanying plate of ldraw-ings my improvedlatch for doors is illustrated- Y Figurepl being an inside viewof the casing between it and the knob-spindle, Y
Figure 2 a section taken inthe plane of the line ,t ze, iig. Land*- i Figure 3 a cross`-see`tion'i n the plane of the line y y, tig). 2.
Similar-letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l'
A, in'thc drawings, repiesent the latch-bolt, arranged within a tube or case, B, to move out and in through C, to which the said case B is fastened. 'lhe tailor inner -end D to the latch-bolt A terminates in a spindle, E,which spindle forms a continuation et'` the bolt A, and at its outer end moves through one side to a hub, F, oi the knob-spindle G. The hub F and spindle-G aro both so constructedfas-tol interlock with each other, and thus, as the spindle G is turned in a direction, either to the right 'or left, as the case maybe, to cause the said hub lto slide within the case B, either more or less, according to the form of construction, and in a corresponding or opposite direction to that in which the knob-spindle is turned. To thehubFis an extension- H, that, at its outer end, is arranged to abut against a lever or pawl, I, connected and interlocked with 1 more particularly. J is a spiral or coiled spring, around extension Eto a plate,
arm, thc latch-bolt A, as shown in iig.
latch-bolt. By th e above-described arrangement of parts between the latch-bolt and knob-spindle, as the kuobis turned in the proper direction, the holt will be drawn in, when, relca sing the knob, the spring J acts to throw outthe Abolt again, as is obvious without any further description.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhc combination of the hub F to knob-spindle, having extension-arm H, in combination with a latch-bolt carrying pawl I, when all arranged together for loperation substantially as and for the purpose described.
' I EDWARD KING.
