T0 ALLHWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. G. HILLEGASS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Pencil-Holding Attachment for Carpenters Compasses; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved pencil-holder.
This invention relates to a device by which' carpenters steel-pointed compasses can be provided with pencil-point whenever desired, so that the said pencils can be applie'l'in a convenient manner, while heretofore the pencil had to be tied to one of the legs of the compass by means of a thread or string.
The invention consists in the use of two plates, which are so stamped that when they are laid together two tubes will be formed, of which one is fitted around one leg of the compass, while in the other the pencil is held. By means of a set-screw the two plates can be clamped together, so as to be firmly fitted around any one part of the leg, and so as to hold pencils of various thickness. This device can be easily applied and as easily removed, and will prove ofv great value to carpenter-sand mechanics in general.
A represents a metal compass, of ordinaryconstruction. BB are two sheet-metal plates, stamped so as i to form two tubes, a and b, when laid together. The same are held together by means of a thumb-screw, c, by
which the diameter of the tubes may be enlarged or contracted. One of the legs of-the compass fits through the tube a, while the pencil C is fitted through the tube 6. The sot-screw clamps the parts in any desired position. I do not wish to confine myself to the special construction of'the clamp B, as the same is herein shown. The same would operate as well if it were made of one piece only.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The removable pencil-holding attachment for carpeuterscompasses, the (same consisting of the clamp B, made adjustable by a. set-screw, c, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
