DONALD M. MGLEAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.`
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,387, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed January 7, 1902. Serial No. 88,819. (No model.)
To all whom, t 711,603/ concern: I Y
Be it known that I, DONALD M. MCLEAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve-V rying sizes of the articles, as valises, hold# alls, eXtension-satchels, or canvas extensionvalises, which it is necessary to secure by straps and buckles in consequence of the varying sizes of the articles and by means of my invention permit such articles to be so secured,`the straps being drawn as tightly as may be desired, and then lock the buckle in such position by means of a small padlock', the hasp of which being passed through an opening provided in the free end of the tongue of the buckle, the same being enlarged for the purpose and which enlarged end permits the tongue to be more easily manipulated by the fingers in freeing the same from the perforations or holes formed in the opposite end portion of the strap, as set forth hereinafter and illustrated in the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l shows a perspective view of a portion of a strap provided with a buckle constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section of same, and Fig. 3 shows a sectional elevation of the buckle disconnected, from the strap.
The buckle-frame a is provided with the cen tral cross-bar b, as usual, or, as desired, in any other suitable manner for the purpose, and to which one end of the strap c is secured and the tongue secured mid-length thereof and the l'opposite end provided with a projection d, having a hole or openingfformed therein adapted to permit the passage of the hasp g of a padlock 1o, which may be of any suitable construction as now in common use.
When it is desired to lock the strap in position around the article for safety and security in transportation or in the absence of the owner or other responsible person, the hasp g of the lock p is passed through the opening f of the tongue and locked by a key in the usualmanner and be readily released upon unlocking the padlock and removing the hasp.
VIt will be observed that the outer end of the tongue rests upon the cross-bar of the buckle frame, with the perforated enlargement d above said cross-bar, thus permitting the hasp of the padlock to freely rotate in the hole f of said enlargement, so that the padlock may rest either as shown in Figs. l and 2 or may swing over to rest on the buckle without bending or breaking the padlock or its hasp, and when it is not desired to lock the strap the padlock may be entirely removed and the buckle then used in the ordinary manner.
.Having thus described my invention, I claim- A buckle having its tongue provided with .a perforated enlargement at its end, said tongue, when the buckle is in use, resting on the cross-bar of the buckle with the said enlargement projecting upward,.whereby a padlock having its hasp inthe perforation of the enlargement may swing forward or back 011 the buckle.
DONALD M. MCLEAN.
