Letters Patent No. 70,831, dated November 12, 1867.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. A. GOODES, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of. :Pennsyl-h vania, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Exhibiting` Metamorphoses of Figures and Pictures; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a portion of this s'pecicatiomxin which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, with the cover or top plate removed.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. v
This invention, which I term a metamorphoscope, designed for the amusement of children and others, consists in two or more endless aprons of diierent lengths, provided with sections of figures or picturesand so combined, that 'when simultaneously operated, the 'position of the sections upon one belt will vbe changed with reference to those upon Vthe others, -in such manner that the iigures or pictures will be successively formed by the conjunction of diii'erent sections, thereby enabling a variety of suchgures or pictures to be produced, proportioned to the number of combinations of which the sections upon the belts are capable. I
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, Iwill proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A, B, and C represent three endless belts, which are vmade of different lengths, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. These belts are supported at one end by a transverse roller, A*, at their opposite ends by separate rollers marked respectively, a, Z, -and c. These rollers are supported by narrow longitudinal bars al, andare made preferably of rectangular form, as shown in tig. 3. The belts with their several rollers are situated Vwithin a suitable box or frame, D, and the shaft or axle d of the roller A*, extends through one side ofsuch box, and is furnished with Va. milled head or knob, e', by turning which, the saidroller may be rotated in such manner as to simultap neously move the'endless belts ata uniform speed. The top plate or covere of the box D, which is placed over the endless belts, is furnished with a transverse hole or opening, f, through which the figures or pictures, provided as hereinbefore fully set forth, upon the belts, may be viewed as Vthe said figures ai'ebrougvht undervneath the same by the movements of the aforesaid belts. Provided upon eaehofthe belts, at equal distances apart, are a number oi' sections or portions of pictorial representations, which, as represented in the drawings, may be those of human gures, the sections upon each belt being those of corresponding parts of the figures. Thus, those upon the belt A represent the head of a human figure, while those ofthe belts B C indicate respect- `ivelyl the body and lowerextremities of the same and inasmuch as the-belts are of diiferent lengths, and arc provided with di'erent numbers of'sections, it follows that when the said belts are moved by means of the knob c', as hereinbefore explained, the sections upon each of the belts,' instead of being kept in the same position with reference to those of the others, will be moved or changed with regard thereto, new figures being formed by new combinations of the sections newly brought into line with each other, so that by these means the figures may be changed or metamorphosed a number of times, proportioned t'o the number of combinations of whichthe diierent sections of the several belts are capable. The pictorial representations, instead of representing individual igures, as hercinbefore described, may, when desired, be those of groups or landscapes.
y'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. The combination of two or more endless belts of different lengths, furnished with sections of figures-or pictures, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v l
2. The combination of the endless belts furnished with sections of figures or pictures, the rollers A* a b e, and the top plate or cover e, formed with an opening, f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
E. A. GOODES.
