Beit known that LGARRY J. DORMANDY, of the village of Lansin'gburg, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in IWIachines for Inturning the Edges of Blanks for Cuffs or Like Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for inio turning or infolding the edges of blanks for cuffs or like articles; and my object is to provide an improved mechanism for operating the folders or infolders which turn in the edges of the blanks to form the folds.
Another object is to'provide a mechanism for pressing the folds before the folded blanks are taken from the'bed.
I will first describe a machine embodying my invention,I and then point out the novel zo features thereof in the claims.
Accompanying this specification, to form a-v part of it,there are siX plates of drawings c ontaining thirteen figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts z 5 by letter reference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure 1 is a top view of a mechanism containing my invention,with the folders shown as moved inwardly over the edges of the blank-holder. Fig. 2 is an- 3o other top view of the saine parts that are shown in Fig. l, but with the folders moved outwardly ,from off the blank and the blankholder edges. The several parts of the apparatus thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letters F designate the frame which supports the bed B, and the letter T designates the table on which the frame rests. This bed Bis constructed with a chamber C on its under side in which steam is used or gas is burned and supplied to said chamber by pipes. (Not shown.)

The ring may, l8o for example, be formed in segments, so connected as to move about a common center or may be otherwise incomplete. The purpose y ofthe ring is toconstitute a slide, and While a circular form of slide has been selected as the most suitable it is not essential for the reason mentioned.
The letters I designate segments, each of which is provided with a slot g2, vertically formed therein, preferably in a reverse curve, 9o and each of'th'ese slots is adapted to receive a vertically-arranged slide-pin p2, which is projected downwardly from the top of one of the folder-slides, and bywhich connection as these segments are moved back and forth in reciprocation about a common center the infolders are together moved outwardly and inwardly over the bed. Each of these segments is arranged within the annular recess r2 of the ring R, to thereat connect'with the ring to loo move with the latter, the connection between the ring and the segments being made by bolts p8, by which one set of segments may be removed and another applied to the same Inachine to adapt the segments to cooperate with infolders doing dierent kinds of work. In the modification shown at Figs. 1l, 12, and 13 a series of arc-form slideways F4 are formed around a common center in the bed B, with a ring R2 arranged beneath the bed and with pins p8 passing upwardly through the arcform slots to connect the segments with the ring R2 to move with the latter when reciprocated, and in the modification the segments are adapted to be attached and detached from the reciprocating mechanism as well as in the machine first described, so that segments having different forms of slots may be used in either instance. It will be seen from this description that the slot g2 and the pin in engagement therewith form a cam intermediate of the ring and infolder, the cam being operated by the ring 'to effect the inward and outward movements of the infolders. While the pin is shown connected with the infolders and the cam-slot with the ring, it is evident that the positions of these two parts may be reversed and the same result effected through the cam action.
The letters F2 designate folders, of which there are four shown as applied to the machine illustrated. Each of these folders has an L form, and they are arranged so that the surface of the folders at their inner edges will inclose an oblong square, with the inner side edges f2 in alinement andalso the end edges f3 in alinement with each other. One of these folders or infolders is shown as detached at Figs. 7 and S, and the one shown there is in form and construction a counterpart of the others. Each of these folders is provided with inwardly-projecting side edges e2 and inwardly projected end edges e. Each of these folders F2 is provided with an overhanging side a2, having thereon a downwardly-projecting rib a', and they are each cutaway at a* for the passage of the pressershanks, and they are each made with a slot co3, by which they are adapted to adjustably connect with that one of the slide-bars which operates them.
The letter S designates slideways formed on the top of the bed B for the movement therein of the slide-bars which operate the infolders, and these slideways S are produced between the bars h2 b2, which are attached to the top of the bed B in eachinstance of their use, there being four of them, one for the slide-bar of each of the nfolders. All of these infolders have a small measure of vertical movementas mounted in their slideways to permit their operating to press down the infolds when moved downwardly by the action of the pressers, as will be more fully detailed hereinafter.
The letters Ndesignate slide-bars, of which there is one arranged in each of the slideways S. Each of these slide-bars is for adjustment, attachment, and detachment connected at its inner end with a bar n2 at an angle, and each of these bars n2 has a ledge g5, provided with a groove g4, formed in its upper surface, by which it is adapted to tongueinto so as to enter b v underrunning the ribbed surface formed in the overhang 0.2 of the folder F2, with which the slide-bar connects at n4 by means of a slot a3 in the infolder and the bolt b4, having a head-nut h2 straddling said slot and passing through the bar n2 at n4.
The letters O designate recesses formed longitudinally in each of the slide-bars N, said recesses each having a bottom opening or slot o2, as shown at Fig. 5.
The letter Mdesignates acam-pin plate, of which there is one for each of the slide-bars N. Each of these cam-pin plates M is provided with a cam-pin p2, which at its lower end is constructed with a caxn-rollerp3,'each of which latter when in position in the machine will be entered in one of the cam-slots g2, formed in each of the segments I, it passing down through the opening 02 to make such connection. As thus constructed and arranged when the ring R is reciprocated within the annular slideway G of the bed by means of the handle H the segments I, by means of the connections which the cam-rollers on the pinsp2 make in sliding engagement with the sides of the segment-slot,the connected slide-bars, and infolders,will be moved outwardly and inwardly, and when the modifications shown at Figs. 11, 12,and 13 are used and when the ring R2 is reciprocatingly rotated the connection made with the infolders by means of the slide-bars and the connection the latter each make with one of the segment cam-slots the infolders are moved outwardly and inwardly in the same manner as when actuated by the ring R. Each of the campin plates M adjustably connects with one of the slide-bars N, by means of a slot m3, made in said plates, and a'heavy bolt b5, passing IOO IIO
through said slot and the opening o2 in the bottom of the bar N, wit-h a nut on the lower end of the bolt straddling the under side edges of the opening o2.
The letters P designate the folder-pressers, of which there are two for each folder. Each of these pressers P has a laterally-extended head p5 arranged thereon at right angles to its shank s2, with the inner end of each of the presserheads arranged to project inwardly over the folders, there being one of these pressers arranged to overhang the end and another the side of each of the folders F2, one of these pressers being shown at Fig. l0 illustrated as detached from the machine, the function of the pressers being as operated to bear down upon the folders and to press into the blanks the infolds formed on their outer edges when located between the folders and the bed and before the folders have been moved outwardly. The shanks s2 of these pressers pass downwardly loosely through the bed B at o3, and thereat they are each threaded at t, and by means of nuts 252 2 f and the plates 7a2 7a2 on its other side.

office of these springs is to lift the bar B4 and its attached mechanism, so that the folderpressers-F will be elevated and raised from olf the folders after the latter have beenactuated to press in the infolds, as will be detailed hereinafter.
The letter J designates a bar, which at its upper ends connects with the under sidel of the bed B to depend therefrom and below, where passing through the cut-away partof the top plate A, it pivotally connects with a lever L, resting upon the top of the horizontal bar B4, with the outer end ofthe lever L connecting pivotally with a' foot-treadle V by means of a rod U, and by which construction and connection when the foot-treadle is depressed the lever L ,will bear downwardly upon the horizontal bar B4 to pull downwardly the presser-frame and pressers7 with the lat-V ter bearing downwardly 'upon the folders F2 to press the infolds between the infolders and the bed against the recoil force of the springs S4, which latter when the pressure upon the foot-treadle is released become active to raise the pressers from off the infolders.

By the employment of segments having cam-slots formed therein, with said segments attachable and detachable from the ring by which the segments are operated to actuate the slide-pins of the infolder slide-bars, segments having differing measures of cam-slot curve and form may be used to operate folders for infolding diering forms of work and by the same machine, which could not be accomplished by a device in which the cam-slots were permanently located in an eccentricallyoperated ring and arranged to actuate infolders made to tongue into each other at their side edges and provided with cam-pins on their outer ends, making a sliding engagement with one of the permanently-located slots in the eccentrically-operated ring, such as has been patented for bookbinder uses.
By the connection made between the campin plates M and the slide-bars N, as hereinbefore described, the slide-bars are made adjustable to the cam-pin plates and by means of the latter to the segment-slots of differing segments, while the slide-bars N are made adjustable to and detachable from the infolders F, as hereinbefore described, whereby one machine is adapted for infolding blanks of differing forms.
Where in the claims and elsewhere herein it is set forth that one part eects the actuation of another, as that the cam-ring or cam eifects inward and outward movements of infolders, I of course intend the broader meaning of the word effect e., to bring about or cause.
To the templet or blank-holder herein shown and described no claim is made herein apart from its combination with the mechanisms for operating the infolders of cuff and collar infolding machines with which it is shown to coperate, this form of templet or blankholder being made the subject of another application for Letters Patent iled by me and known as Serial No. 554,586, and which is now pending.
As the pressers P herein shown and described would perform the same function in the same manner whether applied to the folders which I illustrate and describe or to other forms of infolders actuated in like manner, I do not limit my invention of the pressers to their combination with the infolders, to which I show them as applied.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied to a machine for infolding the edges of cuff-blanks, it is equally applicable by slight changes to the infolding of other and analogous articles-as, for example, the blanks of collars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine for infolding cuif-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having edge portions adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support and within edge portions of the blanks, infolders constructed and fitted to move inwardly andoutwardly whereby edge portions of the blanks may be folded over edge portions of the templet, a slide constructed and fitted to move to and fro, and a plurality of devices, as cams, actuated by the said slide, each device for eifecting the inward and outward movements of one or more infolders.
2. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having edge portions adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support, and within edge portions of the blanks, infolders constructed to move inwardly and outwardly whereby the edge portions of the blanks may be folded over the edge portions of the tem plet, a ring constructed and fitted to slide in bearings located outward of the blanks upon said support, and means intermediate of said ring and of infolders, whereby the said ring may effect the inward and outward movement of infolders.
3. In a machine for infolding cuif-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having edge portions adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support and within edge portions of the blanks, infolders constructed to move inwardly and outwardly whereby the edge portions of the blanks may be folded over the edge portions of the templet, a ring, and a plurality of cams provided in said ring, each for eifecting the inward and outward movements of one or more infolders.
4. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having edge portions adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support and within edge portions of the blanks, infolders constructed to move inwardly and outwardly whereby edge portions of the blanks may be folded over edge portions of the templet, a ring constructed and fitted to move to and fro, the said ring located outward of the blanks upon said support, and means actuated by said ring for eecting the inward and outward movements of infolders. In a machine forv infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having expanding and contracting plates, edge portions of 4which are adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support and within edge portions of the blanks, aV ring constructed and fitted to slide in suitable bearings in said support, slide-bars constructed to move inwardly and outwardly, slideways for said slide-bars, the said slideways being connected to the said support above the said sliding ring, cam-surfaces provided upon the said ring, cam-pins downwardly projecting from said slide-bars lfor engaging with said lcam-surfaces, whereby'the said ring may effect the inward and outward movements of slide-bars, infolders connected to slide-bars, means for sliding said ring to and fro whereby infolders may be moved inwardly and outwardly to fold edge portions of the blanks over edge portions of said templet, and means whereby the folds of the blanks may be pressed between the support and infolders after withdrawal of the plates of the templet from the folds, and thereby fixed with a sharp fold.
7. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, the support provided with an annular bearing, infolders construct-v ed to move inwardly and outwardly whereby edge portions of the blanks may be infolded,
a ring constructed and tted to slide in the bearing in said support, means for oscillating said ring, means intermediate of said ring and of infolders whereby the oscillation of said ring may effect the inward and outward movements of infolders, and means whereby the folds of the blank may be pressed between the support and infolders and before the blanks are taken from the said support, and thereby fixed with a sharp fold.
S. In a machine for infolding cuit-blanks or analogous articles, the combinationv o'f a` support for the blanks to be infolded, a templet for defining the blanks upon said support, infolders for infolding edge portions of the blanks over edge portions of the templet,

In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks to be infolded, a4 templet for defining the blanks upon said support, `infolders for infolding edge portionsof the blanks over edge portions of the templet, bars connected to said infolders constructed and itted to move inwardly and outwardly, a part fitted to move to and fro, cams actuated by said part for effecting the inward and outward movements of the bars,'and means adjustably connecting the cams and bars, whereby the cams may be longitudinally adjustable upon the bars, so that the infolders may be adapted to the infolding of blanks of varying dimensions.
l0. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination ot a support for the blanks to be infolded, a templet for defining the blanks upon said support, infolders for infolding edge portions of the blanks over edge portions of the templet, bars constructed and fitted to move inwardly and outwardly, means connecting infolders and bars whereby the infolders may be laterally adjustableA at the inner ends of the bars, a part iitted to move to and fro, cams actuated by said part for effecting the inward and ICO outward movements of the bars, and means adjustably connecting the cams and bars, whereby the cams may be longitudinally adjustable upon the bars, so that the infolders may loe-adapted to the'infolding of blanks of varyinglengths and widths.

In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support for the blanks, a templet having edge portions adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support and within edge' portions of the blanks, infolders constructed to `move inwardly and outwardly, whereby edge portions of the blanks may be folded over edge portions of the templet, means for effecting the inward and outward movements of said infolders, a part titted to said machine.

In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a support vfor the blanks to be infolded, infold` ers fitted to said support to ,move inwardly y and outwardly whereby the' blanks upon said support may be .infolded, said infolders being adapted to receive a slight vertical movement sufficient to press with a sharp fold the infolds of the blanks between the said infolders and said support, a treadle, and means intermediate of said treadle and said infoldels, whereby the said treadle may eect the vertical movements of the said infolders to press the blanks.
13. In a machine for infolding cuif-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a bed for supporting the blanks, a ring tted to the bed to oscillate, means for oscillating said ring, slides fitted to move inwardly and outwardly on said bed, infolders connected to slides, and cams intermediate of said slides and said ring, whereby when the ring is oscillated infolders may be moved inwardly and outwardly.
14. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a bed, a ring fitted to the bed to oscillate, segments detachably connected to said ring to oscillate therewith and provided with camsurfaces, inwardly and outwardly moving slides provided with cam parts for coacting with the cam-surfaces of said segments, infolders connected to said slides and means for oscillating said ring to effect inward and outward movements of infolders.
15. In a machine for infolding cuff-blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a bed,infolders,the bed provided with a circular slideway,a ring capable of sliding in said slideway, the ring provided with a concentric groove, a cam for operating an infolder connected to said ring through the groove therein, and means for moving said ring whereby the infolder may be operated to infold an edge portion of a blank upon said bed.
16. In a machine for inturning the edges of blanks for cuffs or like articles, the combination with a bed having a circular slideway, and also radially-arranged slideways of infolders each provided with a slide-bar arranged in one of said radial slideways, a ring arranged in said circular slideway and provided with a handle by which to be reciprocatingly rotated therein; segments each having a cam-slot and connected to said ring; a slide-pin arranged to make a sliding engagement with the sides of each of the segmentslots, and mounted upon a plate adjustably connected to one of said slide-bars, whereby as said ring is reciprocated in said circular slideway the infolders will be moved inwardly and outwardly substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
17. In a machine for infolding the edges of blanks for cuffs or like articles, the combination with a bed provided with an annular slideway; of a ring having an annular groove, and arranged in said slideway and provided with an operating-handle; radially-arranged slideways formed in said bed; segments each provided with a cam-slot and interchangeably connected to said ring within said annular groove; infolders each having a slidebar arranged in one of said radial slideways; a slide-pin mounted upon a plate adjustably connected to the outer end of each of said slide-bars, and arranged to make a sliding engagement with the cam-slot of one of the segments whereby as said ring is reciprocatingly rotated the infolders will be moved inwardly and outwardly over the bed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
18. The combination with the bed B, having the annular slideway G, and radially-arranged slideways S; of the ring R, having the annular recess r2, in its upper surface, and provided with an operating-handle H; the segments I, detachably connected to, and arranged within said annular slideway, and each provided with the cam-slot g2; the slidebars N, each arranged in one of said radiallyarranged slideways, and each provided with a slide-pin p2, with each of the latter arranged to engage with the slot g2, of one of the segments; and an infolder F2, connected to the inner end of each of said slide-bars, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
19. In a mechanism forinfolding the edges of blanks for cuffs or like articles, the combination with a bed provided with an annular slideway; of a ring constructed with an annular recess and provided with an operatinghandle by which to be reciprocatingly rotated in said annular slideway; segments each provided with a cam-slot, and each detachably connected to said ring; slideways radially arranged on said bed; a slide-bar arranged in each of said radial slideways; and each provided with a slide-pin, making a cam or sliding engagement with the cam-slot of one of the segments; an infolder for each of said slide-bars; and means substantially as described for adjustably connecting each of said infolders to one of said slide-bars, constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
20. The combination with the folders F2,
each provided with the slot a3, and ribbedv overhanging side a2, of the slide-bars N, each provided with a slide-pin 192, and having a grooved ledge g5 and each attached to one ot' said folders by means of the slot a3, and bolt b4, and segments each provided with a curved slot adapted to receive the slide-pin of each of said slide-bars, with said segments operated to be reciprocatingly rotated on the machinebed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
21. The combination with a series of folders arranged upon a bed, each provided with a slide-bar whereby they may be moved inwardly toward or outwardly from each other substantially as described; of, pressers each havingavertical shank passing down through the bed, and each having a laterally-entend ed head that will overhang the folders when the Vlatter are moved inwardly;v a frame to which the shanks of the pressers attach, and a lever operated by a treadle whereby said frame may be drawn downwardly and cause the presserheads to bear on the folders against the force of a spring, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
23. The combination with the bed B, of the frame Tthe pressers P, attached to the latter and upwardly projected therefrom and each' provided with an overhanging head p5, the le,- ver L, provided with a foot-treadle, and conmeeting-rod; and the folders F2, arranged on said bed beneath the overhanging heads of the pressers, constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
24. The combination with the frame T3, of the presser-s P, each made with a laterally-extended'head p5, and having a downwardlyprojected shank connected to said frame; the folders F2; the spring S4, arranged between said frame and the machine-table, and the lever L, provided with a lfoot-treadle, and connecting-rod constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
25. The combination with the bed B, pro-` vided with slideways S, of the slide-bars N, each connected to a bar n2, and arranged in one of the slideways; the folders F2, each connected to one of said bars n2; the frame TS; the pressers P, each having the laterally-extended head p, and provided with a shank projected downwardly to connect with a frame beneath the bed, and the lever L, constructed and arrangedgto be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
26. The combination with a bed having an annular slideway formed therein; of a ring constructed to be reciprocatingly rotated in said annular slideway; segments each provided with a cam-slot, and attached to said ring; slide-bars each provided Awith slideways and having a cam-pin plate provided with a .p moved downwardly with the heads of the pressers bearing upon said folders, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.

In a machine for inturning the edges of blanks for cuffs or like articles, the combination with a bed of a ring provided witha circular slideway formed in said bed, and proivided with means to be reciprocatingly rotated therein substantially as described; segments each provided with a cam-slot and constructed to be detachably connected to said ring; infolders each provided with a slidebar, and a slideway on the bed; a slide-pin mounted on a plate adjustably connected to each of said slide-bars at its outer end and thereat arranged to engage with the sides of one of said cam-slots; and a templetvhaving eXpandingfand indrawing plates upon its under surface, and provided with means whereby it may be operated to descend onto and rise from oif said bed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In an infolding-machiue, the combination with a bed having an annular slideway and radially-arranged slideways; of a ring provided with an annular recess, and a handle by which to be reciprocatingly rotated in said annular slideway; infolders each having la slide-bar arranged in one of said radial slideways, each of said slide-bars having mounted thereon adj ustably a plate having at its outer end a slide-pin; segments each provided with a ycamslot adapted to receive one of said slide-pins, said segments being connected in a detachablef'manner to said ring substantially as and for the purposes set forth. y

In an infolding-machine, the combination with a bed provided with a circular slideway, and radially-arranged slideways, of a ring provided with a handle by whichvto be yreciprocatingly rotated in said circular slideway; segments each providedfwith a camslot; means substantially as described whereby said segments are detachably connected to said ring;` a slide-bar in each of said radial slideways provided with a cam-pin plate hav` ing on its outer end a cam-pin arranged'to run in one'of the said camslots; and an infolder mountedony the inner end of each of said slide-bars constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.

In a machine for infolding blanks for cuffs or`like articles, the 'combination with a bed having an annular slideway and radiallyarranged slideways; of a ring provided with a handle by which to be reciprocatedin said annular slideway; segments each provided with a cam-slot and 'connected to said ring; infolders each provided with a slide-barl arranged in one of saidy radial slideways; a Aslide-pin mounted u'pon the outer end of a plate connected to each of'said slide-bars, said slide-pins each making a'sliding engagement with the slot of one of the segments; anda blank-holder having expanding and IOD iudrawing plates ou its under surface, and 6th day of June, 1895, and in the presence of means substantially as described whereby the two witnesses whose names are hereto said blank-holder may be operated to descend written.
