JOHN BURKE, OF SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 70,798, dated NovembeflQ, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
dig: 5:11am: refemt it in ilgttt itettirs 332mm ant muting part at the time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURKE, of Sycamore, in the county of DeKalb, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Device for Raising and Lowering the Gear-Frame (or drive-wheel frame) of a Harvesting Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which--- 1 Figure 1 is a backview of the gear-frame and a part of the main frame of a harvester having my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front view of the gear-frame with drive-wheel therein, showing my invention.
Figure 4 is a detail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the four figures. 7
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an adjustable gear or wheel-frame. B is the drive-wheel placed therein, and attached thereto by its axle in boxes a a, figs. 2 and 3. Said gear or wheel-frame is placed within or between the side pieces b b of the main frame 0. c c are the under pieces of said main frame, and extend out towards the platform frame, which should be attached to said pieces 0 c. A slotted bar or standard, D, is fitted and firmly bolted in a recess cut across the middle of the face of the back piece (or end piece)'of frame A, fig. 1. A corresponding recess is cut across the edge of piece 0 of main frame for said standard D. Across the slot in standard D are formed notches at regular intervals, (or equal distances apart.) A bolt, cl, reaches through piece 0 (of main frame) and slot of standard D, far enough-F0 receive upon it, first, a piece or washer, E, having upon one end a ridge made to fit the notches cut across the face of D, which said pieceE may be called a register, and second, a thumb-nut or burr, e, for said bolt d, (outside the register.) To the front end of each of the side pieces of frame A are attached and securely fastened two slotted plates F F, the shape and position of which are shown in figs 2 and 3. Bolts ff, respectively, reach through each of the side pieces 6 b of main frame and slots of F F far enough to receive upon them, first, the dogs or latches G G, (the shape of whichare par ticularly shown in fig. 4;) and second, the nuts or burrs g g. Notches, corresponding in number and distance apart with the notches across the face of standard D, are formed across the faces of those parts of the plates F F which jut directly from the front ends of the side pieces of frame A, fig. 3.
This invention is peculiarly applicable to such harvesting machines as are balanced on drive-wheel, and are used with'rigid (or stiff) pole.
The operation is as follows: To raise or lower the gear or drive-wheel frame, llloosen the thumb-nut e, (which is screwed over the register 13],) so that the index of the register will pass over from one notch to another. Then unlatch the dogs G G and shift the frame A, using as lever the pole of the machine, (which should be rigidly fastened to the front of main frame at the end of piece 6, or other substantial manner,) to such position, either up or down, as may be required, and let the dogs G G catch into corresponding notches in the plates F F. Thus the front end of the frame A is placed where it may be desired. Then level, or rather square, the frame A with main frame,-by slipping up or down on standard D, to proper position with index of.
register in such notch as shall correspond with notches in plates F F, and screw up, by thumb-nut e, tightly. Thus it will be seen that the drive-wheel frame, to which, of course, should be attached the gearing, may be raised or lowered with facility, and adjusted at right angles with the main frame, and may be held in required position rigidly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of slotted plates F F, provided with notches, attached to front end of gear-frame A, with standard D, provided with corresponding notches at back end of said gear-frame, so that said gear-frame may be thus raised or lowered equally at both ends and parallel with main frame, suhstant ally as set forth.
2. I claim the combination of slotted plates with ratchet, consisting of plates 1 F and dogs G G, substantially as described and for the purpose specified. I
3. I claim the dogs G G, for purpose specified.
JQHN BURKE.
