Be it known that I, Ansnosn G. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand Blast Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this IO specification.
My invention relates to sand-blast apparatus, and specifically to the sand-hopper, sanddischarge conduit, and sand-valve governing the same in apparatus of the character del 5 scribed in Letters Patent of the United States issued to me, No. 671,410, dated April 2, 1901. My present improvements therein have for their object to prevent obstruction of the sand-discharge conduit, first, by providing a means of access to the sand-hopper at or near the discharge-outlet, and, secondly and principally, by the provision of an interior sandvalve governing said conduit of a character to be operated entirely outside of the hopper.
z 5 To these ends my invention consists of the novel mechanical features hereinafter described, and recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section in the direction of the line 0 1 2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sand-hopper and its parts comprising the present improvement, the section being on a line transversely of that on which Fig. 1 is taken; and Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in 3 5 section, of the sand-valve.
The general construction of the concrete sand-blast apparatus, as shown in Fig. 1, need not be described. It conforms substantially to that fully described in my said previous .0 Letters Patent except in the particular hereinafter mentioned. It is therefore sufficient to state that the inclosed fluid-pressure and sand-chamber terminates at its base in a substantially conical-shaped hopper C, having a screw-threaded sand-discharge opening at its apex; but said apex of the hopper instead of terminating in a small circular base, as before, is given an enlarged flat base S, which is of the conformation in horizontal cross-section shown in Fig. 3 and in vertical section shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At one side in the wider portion of this flat base there is providod the screw-threaded sand-discharge opening C, as in the device of said Patent No. 671,410, in which is screwed a valvc-controlled tubular discharge-conduit P, leading to the combining-chamber R. In such a device the weight of the sand and the constant fluid-pressure thereon require that the sandhopper 0 shall be strongly constructed, and for that purpose it is made of cast-iron and integral. Means to easily get at and remove obstructions in the discharge-opening thereof (indicated at O) and the connected conduit P must be provided to make a practically useful device, as this opening and passage being necessarily small frequently become clogged by stones, paper, and other foreign bodies in the sand-supply or alone by wet sand, which packs. The first part of my improvement therefore consists in providing a hand-hole opening cl in the inclined side 01 of the cast-iron hopper C close to the discharge opening in the latter, a series of screw-threaded recesses d arranged around the opening d, a Washer (1 a hand-hole cover and plate d", and a series of nutted screw-bolts (1 passing through the cover-plate (Z and entering the recesses (1 In effect this is no more than a hand-hole; but its novelty consists as well in its specific construction as in its relation to a structure of the shape and character of the sand-hopper O.
In devices of this class it is obviously essential that the sand-discharge opening in the hopper O or the tubular conduit P, leading therefrom, should be governed by a sandvalve. In my former device of said Patent No. 671,410 this valve is applied in the tubular conduit P and is liable to constant diso arrangement from clogging with sand, &c.
A feature of chief value in my present invention is designed to overcomethat defect and consists of the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings, 5 in which the sand-conduit P is a single straight tube entering at one end the opening 0 in the apex of the conical sand-hopper and at the other end entering the transversely-arranged combining-tube R. sand-valve governing said conduit is an elongated narrow valve-plate m, (see Fig. 3,) mounted within the sand-hopper. Its wider rounded end m is adapted to be swung laterally over the discharge-opening O of the hopper, While the narrower end 771 is mounted upon a spindle n, the two being fastened on the end of the spindle within the hopper by means of a washer 01 (preferably of rubber) and a nut 91?. The flat base S of the hopper, in the narrow portion thereof, is vertically bored at S to receive a packed collar h-in effect, a stuffing-boX-through which the spindle n passes. On the lower projecting end of the spindle is mounted an operating-handle If. The rubber washer n gives this advantagenamely, that if any,small stone or other foreign body finds its way under the edge of the valve-plate m the latter will not be displaced or loosened in its mounting, but will have a slight and sufficient resiliency due to the said rubber washer.
The utility of the device is obvious. The sand-discharge from the hopper can always be kept free from clogging or continued clogging, the hand-hole arrangement in the inclined periphery of the hopper providing easy access to the parts liable to be so affected and the operation of the interior sand-valve m, by means of the exterior handle 25, thereby throwing the valve-plate m over or off the sandgives absolute control of the sand-discharge The I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A sand-blast apparatus comprising a closed casing or reservoir, having a substantially cone-shaped hopper-base, a sand-discharge opening therein, a communicating tubular sand-conduit leading therefrom to a combining-tube, a hand-hole opening in the inclined wall of the conical hopper contiguous to said discharge-opening therein, and a removable cover therefor said elements being constructed,combined and operating, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sand-blast apparatus, a closed casing from which sand is discharged by the impact of fluid-pressure to a combining-tube, said casing having a substantially coneshaped hopper-base, a central discharge-opening at the apex of the conical hopper, and flat basal portion contiguous to said opening, a valve-plate covering said opening, a valvespindle passing through said casing, and means to rotate said spindle and operate the valve-plate; substantially as described.
