IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
digs seen than it in flgttt ante-punt amt mating put at the smut.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, AMOS M. SHAFER, of Camden, Preblc county, Ohio, have invented a new-and useful Saw-Set; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates principally to aconstruction ofadjustable rests or holders for the punch and saw respectively, whereby the instrument is made applicable to saws of various lengths, widths, thicknesses, and sets.
The invention also comprises a device for ready attachment of the instrument to a stump or other fixed object.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw-set embodying my improvements, one of the gauges being shown detached and in perspective. I
Figure 2 is a front elevation, with one punch in the adjhstable and elastic holder, and two other punches adapted for different-sized teeth, shown in perspective, and detached.
A is a block, (preferably of the root or crotch of some hard wood,) from whose bottom projects a gimletpointed screw, B, by which .said block may be attached to a stump or some other fixed object. Firmly attached to the front upper portion of the block A is a steel anvil, C, a portion of whose top is declined rearward. The punches D I) D, although of diverse dimensions of face, are all equal in their shanks, to fit and occupy the square or otherwise non-circular and tapering socket E of the punch-holder, whose elastic arm, F, is bolted, at G, to the block A. The flexibility of the arm F enables it to yield readily in obedience to the impact of the mallet on the head of the punch, and its elasticity restores it to the upper or starting position represented in the drawing. It being convenient that the face of the punch should be held as near as possible to the ivork,.the instrument being designed for use on saws of various thicknesses and sets, I provide a bolt, H, which extends from thetop of the block through the spring-arm F, and being screw-threaded at 71., carries a nut, I, which being turned down or up on the bolt, serves to limit the contraction of the arm F, and to hold the face of the punch as near to the work as the thickness and desired set to be given will admit'of. KK are two steps or gauges having upturned lips k, and slots is, to receive bolts L, by which said gauges are attached to the top of the block A. The slots K enable the gauges to be set more or less backward or forward, to suit different sizes of saw-teeth.
In order to enable the instrument to be used with any length or width of saw, and so as to give any desired set, I provide a rest for the saw, constructed in the following manner: M M are two brackets occupying dove-tailed grooves, a, in the block A, and having slots, m, to receive screw-bolts N, by which said brackets are attached to the block, the slots m permitting the brackets to be set more or less out from the front of the block, according to the width of the saw. The front ends of the brackets terminate in crotches, O O, of slightly diiferent elevations, to receive a strip, P, which may be of wood, and has a portiomp, of its bottom edge formed obliquely to the top edge 12, to correspond with the ditfercnt elevations of the brackets. The portionp need be no longer than is requisite for the required adjustment,- but the strip P may extend in each direction beyond said portion to any desired distance, according to the length of saw to be operated upon. Thuiiib s'crews Q Q enable the strip P to be securely held to any specific adjustment. When a considerable set is desired to be imparted to the saw-teeth, the strip or rest proper, P, is shifted to the right, so as to depress the back of the saw-blade, as in fig. 1, and for a less degree of set is shifted to the left. The bearing-board P affords a level and continuous support for a saw of any length from one end to the other, so as to preserve the proper plane, without sagging, throughout the entire operation. Both ends of the board are simultaneously and equally elevated and depressed with the utmost accuracy, and without disturbing the horizontality of the bearing surface, by simply shifting the board cndwise to the left or right. The adjustment once made, is absolutely secure and permanent, because the bearing is directly upon the unyielding surface of the brackets, and not in the direction of the tightening-screws Q.
I claim herein as new, and of my invcntionv 1. The screw-standard H h and hand-nut I, in combination with the spring F, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Preserving the parallelism of the sliding rest P with the anvil, and at the same time changing itsJelative height with said anvil, by sliding the inclined edge of the said rest in brackets M O Q, M O Q, substantially as described. I
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
AMOS M. SHAFER.
