ATTACHMENT FOR THRESHING- -MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,287, dated August 19, 1902.
Application filed September 21, 1901. Serial No. 76,068. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LJAMES G.WALKER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Moro, in the county of Sherman and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Threshing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention is an improved attachmentfor threshing-machines, and relates particularly to an arrangement for automatically feeding the straw to either the feeding elevator or cylinder of the threshing-machine.
In running a s'team-thresher for threshing headed wheat it is often found necessary to arrange a derrick-table upon which is positioned men for hoeing down the straw from where it is dumped by the derrick-fork onto the table to the elevator of the feeder; and it is the object of my attachment to provide a device whereby the straw will be positively and automatically fed, and thus dispense with the services of the men for doing this work. In carrying out this object Iprovide a frame to be attached to the thresher having a feedbelt that is geared to the machine for feeding the straw to the chute thereof and at the lower or discharge end of the belt to provide an automatic feeding device for pushing the straw into the cylinder-chamber or on' the feeder-elevator.
With these objects in view my invention also consists in the peculiar construction andnovel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claim,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement detached from the threshing-machine. Fig. 2 is aplan View of the same with portion thereof removed. Fig. 3 is a longi tudinal section of the frame attached to a portion of a threshing-machine; and Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section thereof, taken about on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I employ a frame A, which I shall term a derricktable and which consists of the side portions A A, having their upper ends provided with lateral extensions or platforms A A upon which is suitably held the derrick-frame B, whose upper cross-bar b is designed to hold a pulley B, through which a rope runs for operating a gripping-fork. (Not shown.) J ournaled in the front and rear ends of the frame and at opposite corners thereof are shafts C C, carrying sprocket-pulleys C C, over which run belts O 0 carrying crossslats C 0 that are provided with projecting spurs or fingers, and between the side members of the frame is securely held an inclined metallic platform or bed D,'the ends thereof being curved to encircle the shafts to prevent the straw from catching and being wound thereon. The shaft in the forward end of the frame is extended upon one side and provided with a sprocket-pulley E, over which runs a belt E, that worksupon a pulley E arranged upon a drive-shaft E which is supported by either the bed-piecesor beams E extending-from the frame, as shown. This shaft is also provided with a 'gear-wheel-F, which meshes a similar wheel F, carried by a cranked shaft G, which is also supported by the said extensions E and upon the laterally-projecting portions A of the frame is secured brackets a a, in which is jou'rnaled a second cranked shaft H, the said shafts each having a sprocket-wheel gand h, respectively, over which runs a belt I for transmitting motion to the said shaft .H. The drive-shaft E has a belt-pulley e arranged on its end opposite the gear-Wheel F, over which runs a belt from a pulley carried by the threshing-machine and which imparts movement to the shafts, 'as will be readily understood.
Suitably held'to the crank portions G and H of the shafts G and H is a feeder J, consisting of the side members J J, to which are connected cross bars or slats K K, carrying teeth K, as shown. This frameis located directly above the feeding-chute of the threshing-machine, and as the straw is fed down the incline the feeder will force the straw down through the mouth of the threshing-machine onto the feedingcylinder or on the feederelevator, and it will be further understood that by connecting the feeder to the cranks of the shaft the latter will be given irregular rotary movement as the shafts revolve, which pushes the straw down, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I provide avery simple and compact device whereby the feeding of the straw is automatically accomplished and the services and expense of the men for doing the work thereby avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the kind described, comprising a frame consisting of an inclined bottom, vertical sides, lateral extensions or platforms arranged upon the upper edges thereof, a derrick mounted upon the said extension or platform, a feed-belt operating Within the frame, an extension provided at one end of the frame, a drive-shaft journaled in the end of the extension and having a pulley arranged upon one end, and a gear and sprocket Wheel upon the other end, a cranked shaft journaled in the extension and having a sprocket-wheel at one end and a gear mounted upon the opposite end that meshes the gear of the driveshaft and a cranked shaft mounted in the frame and having a sprocket-Wheel thereon, that connects through a chain belt to the sprocket of the cranked shaft in the said extension, bars connected to the cranked portions of the shafts and having toothed crossbars connected thereto one of the shafts of the feed-belt having a sprocket that connects to the sprocket of the drive-shaft, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
