SAFETY-BALL FOR TRAM PROTECTING-ROLLERS.

To all whom it mag concern:

Be it known that I, EMANUEL films, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Prague, in the Kingdom of Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Safety-Ball for Tram Protecting-Rollers, of which the following is a specification;

My invention relates to improvements in protecting-rollers for tramway-cars, which rollers are covered with elastic" balls or fingers; and the objects of my invention are, first, to make the shock of the protecting implement against the person or animal which it meets as soft and gentle as possible; sec- 0nd, to assure the grasping effectflof the upward rolling and sideward action of the rollers, and, third, to facilitate the replacement of damaged pieces of the elastic covering. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent the protectingroliers respectively in vertical and horizontalprojection. Figs.3and4representaroller in cross-section and in horizontal projection. Figs. 5 and 6 represent the elastic ball or finger in cross-section and in horizontal projec tion.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

1 and 2 are the well-known protecting-rollers,which are rotated opposite to the direction of rotation of the wheels by the usual means if the car is running. Their axes are horizontal and inclined to each other, so as to form akind of wedge, of which the point is in the middle and in front of the car for the purpose of making it impossible for an object met on the way to be drawn under the wheels-of the car. Any person or animal which may be caught by the car running against it is supposed to be carried upward from the street pavement and sideward from the car. It has been proved that this well-known arrangement does not satisfy the expectations placed upon its saving virtues. Even if the rollers are covered with soft material or with a cover of india-rubber they do not grasp sufficiently, and the shock remains very violent for any person collided with. For the purpose of obviating the said drawbacks of this arrangement and making it really useful and effect- Serial No. 105,319. (No model.)

Theyhold in the grooves, because of the dovetails, but are socured besides this with iron or similar bands 9, slung around the rollers on the ring parts tions 8, and the like, for the sake of grasping more effectively. Such balls or fingers if arranged in the indicated way can easily be replaced in case of damage, one by one, and are therefore economical.

I am aware that prior to my present invention protecting-rollers have been known and used which were covered'with' different elastic and properly soft materials and fabrics. I therefore do not claim such rollers nor such covers in general.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

l. The combination with tramway protectin g-rollers having undercut or dovetailed longitudinal grooves, of elastic balls or fingers 3 having rectangular soles with beveled longitudinal edges engaging the longitudinal grooves in the periphery of said rollers, substantially and for the purpose as set forth.

2. The combination with tramwayprotecti ng-rollers, having undercut or dovetailed longitudinal grooves, of elastic balls or fingers having rectangular soles, with beveled longitudinal edges, engaging said longitudinal grooves, and bands 9 encircling the rollers and clamping over the projecting ends of said soles in theannular spaces between the balls.
