Description

PATENT OFFcEe'" JOHN L. 'OSGOOD, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK.
LATHE.
SPECHIGATION. forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,155, dated yAugust 19,1902.
Application filed February 23, 1900. Serial No; 6,168.A` (ANO model-l To alZZ whom, t may concern: y A Be it known that I, JOHN'L. OSGOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo,
in the county of .Erie'and State of New York,
have invented certain'new and luseful Improvements in Lathes,'of which the following is a specification.`
The object of my invention is to increase the durability and life oflathes and similar machines having guides upon which the carf `closing portions of the guides, and thus holding said guides rigidly in their proper position, all of which will be fully and clearly p. hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had` to the accompanying drawings,
illustrating a preferred adaptation of my invention, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a lathe provided with my improved guides.V Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-'section through a portion of a lathe to show Y the preferred adaptation of my invention. Fig. 3 is al detached perspective View of one form of my improved guide, showing a grooved rod whichf is chiefly adapted tobefttedin a groove in the tailpiece or carriage of a lathe. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective View of another oon-VA struction of my improved guide which may `be made in sections or in entire lengths and is chiefly adapted to be used as-a bottom guide to be set in the lathe-bed.
In referring to the drawings in detail like;
numerals designate like parts. Il have shown a preferred form of my invention inthe accompanying drawingsy embodied in a lathe, in which 1 designates the' bed or frame thereof, 2 the headblock or carriage, and 3 the tailpieces.
The bed or frame is provided with parallel grooves" 4, which [extend longitudinally throughout the entirelength of the same.
The detachable rails 'are formed of hard ened steel or other metal and preferably with a slightly-tapered lower portion, so that they can be seated rigidly in the grooves 4, which lare correspondingly tapered. '(See Fig. 2.)
but also as an The vhead-block or carriage and the tailpiece instead of having the usualfgrooves formed therein to receivethe rails may have .grooves 6,' circular in cross-section; in which detachable'rods 7, of hardened metal,-are tted,' said rods having grooves 8, iniwhich the projecting portions of the railsextend and fit, thereby. correspondingly increasing the durability ofthese portions of thelathe...
In Fig. l four rails andffour grooved rod's are shown, but more orle'ss 'may be used. They may be inverted or otherwise changed in form, or the upper grooved rods in some instances may be dispensedwith'.
The chief advantages of my invention are bedded in grooves or'depressions in that part i of the machine to which it is attached throughyout the entire length, the metal of the lathe part partly surrounding and strengthening the rail or` rod and the rail o r rod in turn strengthening the lathe.
In preparing my improved guides I first cut the proper length and the proper size in crosssection, then harden by rolling, hammering, orVV tempering, and finally grind the surface down by any suitable means to remove any distortion, thereby forming an absolutely true guide of sufficient hardness to prevent indentations by any ordinary mea-ns, such as the dropping of a tool or other metal being worked thereon. f p l My improved guide when rigidly set in position in the lathe formsa part of the same and servesn'ot only as a guide 'o fharder and stronger metal than that heretofore employed,`
strengthening-ribfor thelathe of harder, more condensed, and stronger metal. l friction is appreciably lessened and wear is independent detachable IOO substantially prevented, owing to the smoothness and hardness of the contacting surfaces of my improved guides.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lathe, a bed or frame having grooves,
rails of hardened metal itted in said grooves and having portions extending above the surface of the bed, a carriage having grooves on its under surface, rods of hardened metal fitted in said grooves and having depressions in which the extensions of the rails project.
2. In alathe, a bed or frame having grooves, rails of hardened metal fitted in said grooves and having portions extending above the surface of the bed, a carriage having grooves on its under surface semieircular in cross-secrails project.
JOHN L. OSGOOD. Witnesses:
L. M. BILLINGs, A. J. SANGSTER.
