JONATHAN DAVIS, 4OF PHGENIXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GUIDE FOR SEWING EDGI'NGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of .Letters Patent No. 706,166, dated August 5, 1902.
Application filed May 6, 1902. Serial No.1061127. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JONATHAN DAVIS, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Machines for Sewing Braided Edgings to Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a guide adapted for use upon machines designed to sew braided edgings to garments; and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of parts constituting such a guide.
In the sewing of taped or braided edgings to garments it has heretofore been difficult to prevent the braid or tape, which is loosely looped in the edging, from Afalling under the needle or needles of the sewing-machine, and hence being sewed to the garment.
My present invention consists of a means whereby during the sewing of tape or braided edgings to garments the loosely-looped tape or braid may be guided away from the needle or needles of the machine.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevational view of the two members of a guide embodying main features of my invention and of such parts of the sewing-machine to which the members are operatively connected. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the guide and the presser-foot and bracket on the bed-plate of the machine, to which parts the guide members are operatively connected. Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of Fig. l, and Figs. 4C and 5 are perspective views of the members forming the guide detached from the machine.
Referring to the drawings, at represents the bed-plate of the machine, and b the presserfoot, carrying the guide-Harige b and feedrollerb'of usual construction. The machine has also the usual needle or needles d, and upon its bed-plate a is secured the usual adjustable bracket e, having the guiding edge or flange e'. To these old parts there are adapted the two members fand g of my improved guide. The member f is screwed or otherwise secured directly to the presser-foot Z1 and has a flat base j" resting upon the foot b. From this base f projects upwardly and forwardly away from the needle `or needles d a curled body portion f2, having a lip f3 extending over the feed-roller b2 and diverging downwardly toward the same. The member fthns has three distinct portions-namely, a base f, which rests upon and is secured to the presser-foot b, a shield portion f2, adjacent to the needles, and a shield portion f3, projecting over the feed-roller b2 of the presserfoot b. The memberf thus serves to prevent the loosely-looped braid m of the. edging 'm' from dropping or falling against the needle or needles d or upon the feed-roller b2. The other member g of the guide has a base g', screwed or otherwise secured, preferably, to the bracket e, on the bed-plate a of the machine. It has also an upwardly-projecting curled portion gla and an outwardly-Haring portion g3,which serve, respectively, as a guide for the edge of the looped tape m and as a guide for the inner-portion of the edging m', as clearly illustrated in Fig. The member g thus has three portions-namely, a base portion g, by means of which it may be secured to the bracket c or other stationary part of the machine, a curled portion g2, against which the edge of the looped tape is guided, and a flaring portion g3, which serves to guide the inner portion of the edging m toward the presser-foot b.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a machine for sewing loosely-taped edgings to garments, a means whereby during the sewing of the edging the loosely-looped tape or braid may be guided away from the needles of the machine, said means comprising two members, whereof one is secured to the presser-foot and is provided with an upwardly and forwardly projecting curled body portion having a lip extending over the feedroller of the presser-foot and the other member is fixed to the bed-plate of the machine and is provided with an upwardly-projecting curled portion and an outwardly-flaring portion serving respectively as a guide for the edge of the looped tape and a guide for the` inner portion of the edging.
2. In a machine of the character described,
IOO
the combination of a presser-foot and its feedroller, a needle or needles and means for operating the Same, with a guide member having a base united to the presser-foot, an upwardly and forwardly projecting body portion extending upward adjacent to the needles and a curled lip portion extending over the Y feed-roller of the presser-foot and a second guide member IiXed to the bed-plate of the
