CHARLES W. ROBINSON, OF SI-IARPSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK FOR RAIL-JOINTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,612, dateclJuly 29, 1902.
Application filed December 1901. Serial No. 85,356. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C ARLES W. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sharpsville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks for Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nut-locks for railjoints, and has for its object, broadly, the provision of novel means whereby the nuts used in connection with the bolts for securing the fish-plates may be securely fastened one to the other and prevented from turning or jarring loose.
Another object of the invention is to construct a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention also contemplates to con-.
struct a device that will permit the rails to be easily removed in case repairs are necessary.
With the above and other objects inview,
the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rail having my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective View ofthe locking-nut.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the rails, 2 the fish-plates, 3 the usual bolts passing through the fish-plates and web of the rail, said bolt being screwthreaded, as shown at 4, to receive the ordinary nut 5 and the locking-nut-G, said locking-nut carrying-a screw-threaded shank 7, which passes through the opening 8, formed in the locking-plate 9.
The reference-numeral 1Ov represents a securing-nut secured upon the end of the screwthreaded shaft 7 and engages the upper face of the locking-plate 9.
It will be seen that by this construction it will be impossible for the nuts to turn upon the bolt and that the rigid connection will be secured at all times.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail-joint, the combination with the rails, of fish-plates, bolts secured in said fishplates, nuts secured to said bolts, 1ockingnuts secured on said bolts carrying screwthreaded shanks,a locking-plate secured upon said nuts and encircling said shanks, and securing-nuts arranged on the upper portion of said shanks, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, thecombination of the rails, fish-plates, bolts extending through said rails and fish-plates, locking-nuts carrying screw-threaded shanks, a locking-plate through which said shanks extend, and securing-nuts engaging said shanks:and the upper face of said lockingplate, substantially as described, andfor he purpose specified. In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. ROBINSON. Witnesses: I l
