NU T LOCK.
' (Application filed Apr. 28, 1902.
(No Model.)
. WITNESS 7 ciweco WW GEORGE COLEMAN, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS.
NUT LOC-K. i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 704,617, dated July 15, 1902. Application filed April 28, 1902. Serial No. 105,086. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulIm-t provements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe 'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference-marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut-locks adapted especially for use in connection with fish-plates on railways, &c.; and it consists in the provision of a nut-engaging plate which is carried by the washer-plate and provided to form stops against the edges of the nuts to prevent their unscrewing from the bolts holding the fishplates to the meeting ends of rails.
The invention comprises various other details of construction and combinations and. arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with'the let tors of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nut-lock shown as applied to a fish-plate and washer carried by the bolts passing through the rails. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the washer-plate. Fig. i is a detail view of the locking-bar.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the meeting ends of rails, the web portions of which are apertured to receive the bolts 13, suitable fish-plates 0 being provided which are preferably annular in shape to conform to the web members or platesof therail, and E designates a washer-plate having apertures E to receive the threaded'ends of said bolts, and projecting laterally from one side of said washer-plate is a square-shaped lug F, having a shoulder F at a slight distance from the face of the washer and an aperture G near its free end.
from the face of said washer.
K designates a nut-locking bar which has ed to fitover said square-shaped lug project- Tlie ends of s'aid nut-locking bar, which may be reinforced by ribs, as shown, are adapted to be held against the adjacent edges of nuts car- 'ried onthe two boltsand serveas' a :stopto said nuts being turned in either direction whilethe baris thus held upon the lug carried by the washer-plate. After the lockingbar is adjusted in place a keyR'isadapted to be passed through the aperture in the ends of the lug and prevent the bar being removed from the lug of the washer-plate.
In applying the device the bolts are both inserted through the fish-plates and then the washer plate placed over the ends of the bolts. The nuts are screwed on the threaded ends of the bolts, and afterward the lockin g-bar is placed over the square-outlined lug, with the ends of said bars adjacent to the edges of-the two nuts, and by means of the key beingpassed through said lug said lockingbar may be held securely in place.
From. the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a nut-lock made in accordancewith myinvention the nuts are securely'heldfrom moving ineither direction, and when it is desired to move the nut in either direction by first removing the key the locking-bar may be removed and afterward the nuts unscrewed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- A nut-lock comprising in combination with a washer having an integral lug projecting therefrom with apertured ends, and provided with a shoulder F", the under. edge of said washer being cut away between its apertured ends, a locking-bar K mounted on said lug and designed to be held in contactwith said shoulder and spaced from the outer face of said washer, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE COLEMAN. WVitnesses:
JOSEPH DURHAM, DUNCAN M. G. DEWAR.
