\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN B. wALL-AcE, OF NEwcAsTLE, PENNSY VANIA.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,495, dated July 22, 1902.
Application filed January 3l,1902. s riaino. 91,984. (Remodel-1 To all whom, it quay concern:
Be it known that I, ALLE B. WALLACE, a citizen of the UnitediStates of America, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and usefullmprovements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks, and has for its object, primarily, a lock which has economic features of construction and simplicity of operation; furthermore, a lock in which the lockbolt may be secured from the interior of the door against movement when a key is inserted to actuate the same.-
With the above and other objects in view the invention further consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts to be clearly described in the following specification and fully set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a plan View of a lock containing my invention with the plate removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing the guide secured to the inner face of the casing-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the latch member. Fig. at is an underneath plan View of the lock-bolt. View of the casing, showing the engaging member for actuating the lock-bolt. Fig. 6 is a like view showing the pawl" for securing the lock-bolt; and Fig. 7 is a plan view, partly in secltion, showing the key for operating the The latch 1 carries a contracted shank 2 and has the usual opening 3 therein, in which engages the arm, suitably mounted on the knob-shank. (Not shown.) Stops 27 are carried by latchl andlimit the forward movement of the same by engagement with lugs 7 and S. A downwardly-extending projection 4 is secured to the inner face of the plate'5 of the lock-casing and has an aperture therein through which the contracted shank 2 of the latch-bolt operates. A spring 6 is mounted on the shank 2 and engages the one side of Fig. 5-is a' sectional The forward end of the lock-bolt is suitably recessed, as shown at 12 and 13, for the reception of the lug 14, which is extended and enlarged and serves as a means for securing one of the plate-screws. (Not shown.) The lock-bolt is cut away, as at 15, in order to per- -mit of the same passing the lug 14: without engagement. The numeral 16 designates a similar lug secured in the door-frame member 17, adapted toengage in recess 13 when the lock-bolt is in its locked position.
An arc shaped cut-away portion 18 is formed in the lock-bolt and engages the arm 19,'which is 'mounted on a shank 20, pivotally secured in the casing. The shank is operated by a suitable key and is shown as having square ends. The lower portion of projection at is'enlarg'ed and has one'end of a flat spring 21 rigidly secured therein, the forward portion of which spring is bent downwardly and engages the upper face of the lock-bolt. The free end of this flat spring is bent upwardly to form a lug 22, the purpose of which will be hereinafter stated. An arm 23 is pivotally secured in the casing and has the ends ,of its shank notched for the purpose of receiving a key in order to operate the arm. The arm is mounted above the spring and is adapted to have its free end engaging the lat- 'ter when in a vertical position.
Thus when it is desired to prevent operation of the lockbolt when the latter is in a locked position or otherwise it is only necessary tomove the arm downwardly, when the same will engage the spring and have its movement limited by the lug 22, previously mentioned. For the purpose of securing the arm in an inoperative po-- sition a leaf-spring 24: is secured in a boss 25,- whereby the free end of the arm may be supported by the spring and disengaged there from by slight downward pressure of the key when the latter engages in the shank of the arm.
A stop 26, secured in the casing, prevents undue upward movement of the arm.
It will be noted that the flat spring exerts pressure at all times upon the lock-bolt, thus securing the same normally in engagement with the lugs, which are received in the recesses 12 and 13, and when in a locked position the lock-bolt recesses are each engaged, the former by lug 14 and the latter by lug 16.
I desire to call particular attention to the fact that with a lock constructed as above described it will be absolutely impossible to use a jemmy, as the arm 23 is free to drop of its own weight, so that the person opening the lock must be provided with both keys, it being required that the arm 23 be held up by its key in order that the arm 19 may be operated to actuate the bolt. As shown, the arms are preferably operative from both sides of the lock.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the lock-casing havingaprojection therein through which operates the spring-pressed latch, of a lock-bolt secured in the casing and carrying a pin, a guide in which the pin operates, the under face of the front end of the lock-bolt having recesses formed therein, a lug secured in the casing and normally engaging inone of said recesses, the lower end of the said projection having a flat spring rigidly secured therein, the free end of the spring extending downwardly and engaging the upper face of the lock-bolt, with a lug carried by the said end, means pivotally secured in the casing for engagement with said spring, whereby the lockbolt is held in an inoperative position, and means for operating the lock-bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the lock-casing having the latch-bolt therein, of a lock-bolt mounted so as to have a pivotal and longitudinal movement, means for operating the lock-bolt, the free end of said lock-bolt having recesses therein, a lug secured in the easing and engaging in said recesses, a spring having its one end rigidly secured in the easing and its free end engaging the upper face of the lock-bolt, means in the casing for engaging said spring whereby movement of the lock-bolt is prevented, means for supporting said means, and means for limiting the movement of said first-named means, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALLEN B. WALLACE.
