PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI J. JODER, OF MEYERSDALE,PENNSYLVANIA.
CHECK-LOCK FO'R M [NE-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,832, dated July 1 5, 1902.
Application filed March 3, 1902. Serial No. 96,468." (No model.)
To all whoa z it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, LEVI J. J 0DER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Meyersdale, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Locks for Mine- Oars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to check-locks for mine-cars.
Cars used in mines after having been filled by the miner are supplied with a check by the miner filling the car to enable the person keeping account of the miners work to make a record of each carloaded and give the miner credit therefor. As is now the custom, these checks are usually hung upon a peg or nail driven in the side of the car and oftentimes become lost, and then, again, oftentimes they ing it impossible for the check to become accidentally detached and also for an unscrupulous person to remove the check and substitute his own therefor, and thereby get credit for the labor unless he first unloads thecaru -With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly .pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a mine-car, taken from the outer side, illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken from the inner side, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on line a: a; of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the open top of a mine-car having a narrow slot or opening 2 in its side, preferably near its lower end.
2 denotes a plate secured to the inner side of the car and having a narrow slit or opening 3, coinciding with the slit or opening in the side of the car.
4 denotes the tag, having a ring or link 5, which is adapted to be inserted through the registering slits or openings aforesaid and to be held in place by a hook 7, pivoted to the plate 2', which hook has a vertically-swinging movement and in order to engage the ring must be swung downwardly. It is evident that when the car isfilled with coal this hook willbe inaccessible, thus rendering it absolutely impossible for the tag to be surreptitiously removed without first disengaging the hook from the ring, and this cannot be done until after this hook has been uncovered or exposed by the removal'of the contents of the car above the hook.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,' is
I 1. The combination with a carhaving an opening in its body portion above the floor thereof, of a check or. similar token, a ring connectedto the check or token and inserted through the opening in the side of the car, and a hook pivoted to the side of the car and swinging ina vertical plane downwardly to engage said ring and lock the same in place, substantially as described. 1
2. The combination with a car having an opening in its body portion above the floor, of a check or token, and a fastening for uniting the check or token to the body of the car,
said fastening consis'tingof two elements one of which projects through the opening in the bodyof the car and is connected to the check or token, and the other of which is separate and distinct from the first-named element to 5 engagethe same by downward movement and 'thus lock the check or token in place, substantially as and for the purpose set'forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two'snbscribing witnesses.
LEVI J. JODER.
Witnesses:
