SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,814, dated July 15, 1902. Application filed December 28, 1901- $erial No. 87,561. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER CAREY, a citizen of the United States; and a resident of Cairo,
in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Drying-Kiln,of which the following is a f ull,clear, and exact description;
This invention-relates to a kilndesigned especially for drying veneerand like material; I
and it comprises, broadly speaking,.a num-. ber of carriers moving horizontally through the kiln and drawing the veneer in at one end drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is an enlarged detail view showing the framing, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the kiln broken away.
The kiln is constructed with imperforate side and top walls. The front wall a and rear end wall I) (see Fig. 2) are formed with transverse slots a and h, respectively. Through the slots a, of the walls a pass the upper and lower runs of the carrier-belts 0. These belts are formed of longitudinal chains and transverse hars or slats, and they run around sprocket-wheels c and 0 arranged, respec tively, at the ends of the kiln. At the lefthand or feed end of the kiln an extension is formed, this extension having an outer wall e, slotted to permit the passage of the carrierbelts c, and the sprocket-wheels c are located just outside of this wall. The sprocketwheels 0 are locatedjust inside of the discharge end wall h. The veneer (indicated at d in Fig. 2) is fed in at the left-hand end on the top run of the carrier-belts and is discharged at the right-hand end, as illustrated. The carrier-belts c are driven from the sprocketwheels as by means of a vertical shaft f, located at one side of the kiln and geared with the horizontal shafts on which the sprocket- ,starting end of the machine.

These operating-cords f extend over suitable guide-pulleys to the left-hand or (See Fig. 5.) f indicates a drive-shaft. and f a frictionclutch for the shafts f and f and f indicates connection running to the starting end of the machine whereby to operate the clutch. (See Figs. 1 and Within the kiln are arranged a number of racks for supporting the runs of the carrierbelts. These racks are made up of stationary transverse beams 9, (see Fig. 4,) such beams being fastened to vertical posts It for supporting the racks. Over the beams g are adj ustably sustained the top beams g, which beams g are one for each beam g and mounted thereon by means of screws g Longitudinal track-rails g are mounted on the beams g and g and are adapted to have the sprocketchains of the carrier-belts a run over them, and longitudinal guide-cleats g are carried by the opposite edges of the pairs of beams g and g these guide-cleats serving to guide the lower runs of the carrier-belts c. It will be observed that the racks thus constructed properly sustain the belts c from sagging with their load and keep the veneer spaced apart, so that it may be effectively dried.
The hot air is supplied from a main duct 1', passing under the kiln andprovided with vertical branches i extending up into the kiln at each side of the racks. From these vertical branches extend horizontal distributertubes i which have longitudinal slots formed in their sides,-the slots opening toward the racks and the distributing-tubesbeing lo-- cated one at each side of each belt, so as to.
thoroughly distribute the heated air throughout the kiln.
The manner of using thekiln'is preferably as follows: The gearing of the shaft f is connected, so as to drive the carrier-belts c, and the veneer is then fed into the machine through the slots in the extension-wall c. This is continued until the upper run of each belt is fully covered with veneer. Then the operation of the carrier-belts is stopped and the current of'air turned on through the ducts 1. The combination with a kiln having a se ries of openings in its end walls, of a plurality of horizontal shafts mounted adjacent to each end wall of the kiln, belt-wheels on the several shafts, carrier-belts passing around said belt-wheels, a vertical shaft at the discharge end of the kiln and geared with each of the horizontal shafts at that end of the kiln, clutches for connecting and disconnecting the gearing between said horizontal and vertical shafts, and operating means connected with each of the clutches and extending to the feed end of the kiln, as set forth.
2. The combination with a kiln having a series of openings in its end walls, of a plurality of horizontal shafts mounted adjacent to each end wall of the kiln, the shafts at the feed end being outside of the end wall and those at the discharge end being within the wall, sprocketwheels on the several shafts, carrier belts passing around said sprocket-wheels, a vertical shaft geared with each of the horizontal shafts at that end of the kiln, clutches for connecting and disconnecting the gearing between the said horizontal and vertical shafts, and operating cords connected with the clutches and extending to the feed end of the kiln, a drive-shaft having a clutch connection with the vertical shaft, and means for operating said clutch, said means extending to the feed end of the kiln, as set forth.
3. Adrying-kiln, having a plurality of endless belts running horizontally therethrough to receive the material at one end of the kiln and discharge it at the other end, and guideracks for said belts, said guide-racks comprising upper and lower transverse beams, ad-
j ustable, relatively one to the other, and longitudinal track-rails on the said beams for the upper and lower runs of the carrier-belts, as set forth.
4. A drying-kiln, having a plurality of endless belts running horizontally therethrough to receive the material at one end of the kiln and discharge it at the other, and guide-racks for said belts, said guide-racks comprising upper and lower transverse beams respectively for the upper and lower runs of the carrier-belts, the upper transverse beams being adj ustably sustained on the lower beams.
5. A drying-kiln, having a plurality of endless belts running horizontally therethrough to receive the material at one end of the kiln and discharge it at the other, and guide-racks for said belts, said guide-racks comprising upper and lower transverse beams and longitudinal track-rails on the said beams for the upper and lower runs of the carrier-belts, said beams having longitudinal guide-cleats on their adjacent faces, between which cleats the lower runs of the carrier-belts pass.
6. A drying-kiln, having a plurality of endless belts running horizontally therethrough to receive the material at one end of the kiln and discharge it at the other, and guide-racks for said belts, said guide-racks comprising upper and lower transverse beams and longitudinal track-rails on the beams for the upper and lower runs of the carrier-belts, the
said transverse beams having longitudinal guide-cleats on their opposing faces and the carrier belts being formed of chains with cross-bars connecting them, the chains running on the rails.
7. A drying-kiln,having means for carrying the material,and air-circulating devices in the kiln, comprising vertical conduits with horizontal distributing-tubes passing therefrom, the distributing-tubes having longitudinal openings along their inner sides.
