Be it known that I, HARRY IV. PENNY- PAOKER, a citizen of the United States, r'e'sid-' ing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Stuffing Machines, of which the following is a specification,-- reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of the machine, showing the top raised. 7 Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the lifting counterweight and attachments; Fig. 3 is a plan view, the top having been removed. My invention relates to improvements in mattress-stuffing machines, and has for its objects to provide for adjustment of the width, compact mechanism for operating the crosshead, adjustable spout, and Various other details of construction and improvement, as
shall be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is the main frame of the machine structure, along one side of which is mounted the permanent floor section 3 and permanent side 4., such floor and side being located at the side opposite to the position of the operatorin filling the machine. The opposite side 5 is slidingly mounted, together with aportion of the floor, upon bearings 6 and is adapted to be moved in and out to vary the width of the machine. The adjustable-floor is composed of a series of slat members 7 ,which,with the side 6, is secured to sprocketchains 8 at each end of the machine, mounted on sprocket-wheels 9 10 and passing around adjustable sprocket-wheels 11, by which slack of the chain may be taken up.
The slat members 7 extend longitudinally for the full length of the machine and are Fig. 5 is a plan-view of thepreferably tapered downwardly and inwardly at each side, so that as they are turned around the sprocket 10 they will drop below the main normal level of the floor and-the spaces between them will open up, permitting dust or refuse matter to drop through freely. The sprockets 10 are mounted on ashaft 12, journaled at each end and provided at intervals with rollers 13, which provide bearings for the slats. At one end the shaft 12 is geared by bevel-gearing 14 15 with a shaft 16, provided with ahand-wheel or crank 17, by which the shaft may be turned to adjust the slat floor and side 5 to the desired width.
The plunger by which the filling material is compressed and forced through the machine and spout into the mattress-cover is .also adjustable asto width and is composed of a centralrnember18 and a rigid laterallyextending frame having a front member 19, constituting one side of the cross-head. Upon such rigid side frame is slidin'gly mounted by dovetail or other suitable joints a similar frame, the front member 20 of which constitutes theother side of the cross-head and which may be set to the desired width in or out and secured by set-screws, pins, or other suitable means. A supplemental thin metal plate 21 is pivoted at 22 and constitutes a folding extension, which in the extreme width forms a practically rigid portion of the plunger.
Extending longitudinally of the machine,
running inguides 23 of channel or other suitable form, is a sprocket chain '24, passing around sprocket-wheels 25 26 at each end and around a lower tightening wheel 27, the sprocket 25 being mounted on shaft 28 at the front, driven through gearing 29 30 by crank 31 by hand or through suitable pulleys or gearing by power if preferred. Each end of the chain 24 is secured to a carrier32, mounted in guides 23, having one or more fingers 33 extending upwardly through a longitudinal slot 3a in the floor and engaging the. central member 18 of the plunger, so that when motion is imparted to the chain in either direction the plunger will be carried forward or back.
The top, which is likewise adjustable in width, is composed'of a number of longitudinal members 35, pivotally hung at the back ICO end upon a shaft 36, mounted in suitable bearings at the back of the main framework 2, but adapted to be closed inwardly toward each other by means of sliding members 37, fitting into each other by dovetail or other sliding joint, so that the top may be widened or narrowed.
Intermediate slats or leaves 38 are hung upon two rigid cross members 39, secured to intermediate members 35, one at each end, by means of cleats 40, preferably pivoted to the slat, as at 41, so that the cleats may be turned around for inserting or removing the slats. Across the front end of the top isa bar 42, extending slightly outwardly at each side, upon which, by means of pivotal levers 43 at each side, the top is clamped down to position,
compressing the filling, when locking-hooks.

Extending forwardly of the machine are the top 45 and bottom 46 of the spout, the bottom 46 being on a level with the floor, while the top 45 is on a level with the under side of the top when closed, such top and bottom members of the trough overlapping each other at the middle, as shown in Fig. 3, and permitting the closing in of the spout in comformity with the closing in of the adjustable side 4. For such purpose the top and bottom of the trough are secured to side 4 at such side. The sides of the trough are preferably left open, as shown, and are provided with flanges 46, so as to provide bearings for the hinged doors when they are thrown out to form the sides of the trough. Such hinged doors (indicated by numerals 47) are of thin sheet metal and are pivoted at 48 and provided with a coiled spring 49, by which they are normally thrown out against the flanges 46, thus providing sides for the spout flush'with the inner sides of the machine. 50 is a gate slidingly mounted on a bar 51 by means of metal straps 52, having hooks'53 at their upper ends engaging a longitudinal groove in the upper edge of the bar, while the bar and the suspended gate are raised and lowered by levers 54, pivoted at 55 to upright bearings, the levers being-pivoted together at the middle, as at 56, and to suspending-rods 57 at the ends of the lovers in guides 58-, by which rods the bar 51 is suspended. By thus mounting the end gate slidingly on the bar it may be adjusted back and forth across the machine as the bedis widened or narrowed and may always be located centrally and provide a bearing for the hinged gates 47 without adjusting the bar 51.
The operation is as follows: The sides, floor, top, and spout having been adjusted to the desiredwidth, the pivoted sides 47 of the spout are turned back and the gate, lowered, the sides bearing forwardly against the inner sides of the gate when the plunger commences to compress, the hinged gates thus closing the opening at'each side of the sliding gate. The
plunger is set back to the starting position.
(Shown in Fig. 7.) The space in front of it and between. the sides is filled with the mattress-filling.- The top is clamped down. The mattress cover or tick is placed in position over the spout, when byturning the crank 31 or applying power to shaft 28 the chain 24 is set in motion, carrying the filling forward and forcing it outwardly through the spout into the cover. The top is then raised, being lifted by the counterweight and connections passing around the sheaves. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The cross-head is reversed, when the machine is ready for another operation.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by all those familiar with this class of machinery, and it will be found to embody many improvements and advantages not found in machines 'nowin use for making mattresses. I
The inwardly-sliding side,with the sectional continuous floor, making a smooth continuation of the floor at varying positions, is-very convenient and efficient in operation and obviates the necessity of the operator reaching over to remove from or insert slats in the floor to Vary the width.
The top cross-head, spout, and other features are easily and quickly adjusted to varying dimensions, while the means for operating the cross-head are very compact, occupying a minimum of floor-space and entirely obviating the necessity of the considerable floor-space required for reciprocating plungerbeams, screws, &c., and their accompanying gearing.
Changes and variations may be made in the dimensions, proportions, arrangement, or other details of construction by the skilled mechanic without departing from the invention, since I do not desire to be confined to the exact construction as shown and described, but to include all such as within the scope of the following'claims.
What I claim is a 1. A mattress machine provided with a movable side and a normally stationary, latorally-adjustable flexible floor portion.
2. A mattress-machine provided with a permanent floor-section and a flexible floor adapted to form a continuation of the permanent floor-section. I
3. A mattress-machine provided with a permanent side and floor-section, and an adjustable side and flexible floor-section with means for adjusting such adjustable side and floorsection.
4. A mattress machine provided with a flexible floor section composed of downwardly-tapered slats mounted on flexible carrying devices, with operating-wheels therefor, said slats being adapted to close together at the top on a level and to separate from each other around the wheels, and a vertical side adapted to move in conformity with the floor-section.
5. A mattress-machine provided with a laterally-adjustable flexible floor portion, composed of downwardly-tapered slats, adapted to conform to the level of a permanent fioorsection, with means for supporting and car; rying the slats.
6. A mattressmachine provided with a plunger having central slotted openings, longitudinal guideways, a carrier mounted therein provided with upwardly-extending fingers in engagement with the slotted openings of the plunger, and a carrying-chain connected with the carrier, with means for transmitting movement to the chain.
7. In a mattress-machine: a plunger composed of two interfitting laterally-extensible portions, and a supplemental folding plate pivoted to one of said portions.
8. A mattress machine provided with a plunger having a laterally-extensible portion, a supplemental pivoted plate, and means for moving the plunger.
9. A mattress-machine provided with a plunger having a laterally-extensible portion, a supplemental pivoted plate, and a flexible carrier provided with means adapted to engage the plunger.
10. A plunger for mattress-machines consisting of a frame having a laterally-movable portion slidingly mounted on the frame, and
' a supplemental pivoted plate adapted to provide an extension of the plunger.
11. A mattress-machine provided with a laterally-extensible clamping-top, consisting of longitudinal members pivotally mounted at one end, interfitting sliding cross members, and removable slats, with means for supporting the slats.
12. A mattress-machine provided with a laterally-extensible clamping-top consisting of longitudinal members pivotally mounted at one end, interfitting sliding cross members, slat-supporting bars, and removable slats mounted thereon.
