SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,935, dated July 1, 1902.

To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alta, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Recording-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its general object to provide a machine calculated to facilitate the keeping of a record of business transactions of all kinds; and it will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my im' proved machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same as it appears when the upper section of the case is removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the right-hand side of the machine with the upper case-section removed. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the left-hand side of the same. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section of the machine with the upper case-section removed. Fig. (3 is an enlarged detail view illustrating a portion of the mechanism through the medium of which the roll for taking up the record-bearing strip is operated. Fig. '7 is a detail vertical section illustrating said mechanism in side elevation. Fig. Sis a detail broken perspective View illustrating the inking-roll and the printing-cylinder in their proper relative positions. In the said drawings similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the several views, referring to which A is the lower section of the case of my improved machine, which is open at its forward end and provided at its forward portion with an upper horizontal wall a, designed, in conjunction with its bottom and side walls, to form a drawer-compartment Z).
B is the upper case-section, arranged upon and connected to the lower section by hooks c or other means.
0 is a slidable money-drawer arranged in the compartment 1) of the lower casesection.
D is a keeper-plate fixed on the bottom wall of the drawer-compartment b, and E F are latches mounted in the drawer and adapted to engage the keeper-plate D. These latches are connected to finger-bars E, which extend through openings in the forward wall of the drawer and have angular branches disposed belowa handhold g on said wall. Said keeperplate, latches, and finger-bars are comprised in a drawer-fastening means forming the subject-matter of my contemporary application for patent, which application constitutes a division of this.
The side walls of the drawer O are extended inwardly beyond theinner transverse wall thereof, as best shown in Fig. 2, and on one of these extensions, preferably the one adjacent to the left-hand side of the machine, is an inwardly-projeoting lateral arm 3, for a purpose presently described.
G G are frame-uprights connected to and rising from the top wall of the compartment 1) and the bottom of the case-section A in rear of said compartment; H, a roll designed to support a web or strip of paper and having trunnions t at its ends, removably arranged in inclined notches it in the rear edges of the frame-uprights; I, a tension device, preferably of bail shape, pivotally mounted 011 a transverse rod 1; between the frame-uprights and pressed by a spring to against the paper on the roll H, so as to prevent a too-free unwinding of the paper from said rolls; J, an idler guide-roll over which the web or strip of paper passes after leaving roll H; K, a printingcylinder; L, a roll for inking the periphery of said cylinder; M, a roll around which the web or strip of paper passes after leaving the roll J and which serves to press the paper against the printing-cylinder; N, an idler guide-roll disposed in rear of and in a plane slightly above the roll M; P, a support connected at its ends to the frame-uprights G and interposed between the rolls M N and provided, by preference, with an upper surface 08, of glass, and Q a roll on which the strip or web of-paper is wound after receiving the printed matter and entries hereinafter specifically referred to. The trrinnions y 1 of the printing-cylinder are removably secured in notches z of the frame-uprights G byhooks a, (see Fig. 4,) and the trunnion 1 at the right-hand side of the machine is connected by a train of gearing with the trunnion b of the take-up roll Q, as shown in Fig. 3, where- ICO by it will be seen that when said take-up roll is turned in the direction indicated by arrow by means presently described the printingcylinder will be turned in the same direction and at a corresponding rate of speed. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the printing-cylinder is provided with a peripheral covering 0, of rubber or other yielding material, which, in addition to circumferential ribs d for ruling the strip or web of paper longitudinally and dividing the same into columns, is provided with type c for printing the proper headings at the upper ends of the columns, and a longitudinal groovef, the latter being arranged at one end of the cylinder and having for its purpose to hold dateprinting type 9', (see Fig. 9,) which type 9 are removable in order that the date which the cylinder prints on the strip or web of pa per may be readily changed at the commencement of each business day. The portion of the peripheral covering 0 of the cylinder K, which is presented to the paper immediately before the type c g, is depressed, as indicated by h, or cut away, this in order to leave the portions of the paper immediately preceding the dates and column-headings blank, for a purpose presently pointed out. I prefer to employ a printing-cylinder having a peripheral covering of rubber or other suitable elastic material, as described; but I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to the same, as printing-cylinders of other descriptions may obviously be employed without departing from the scope of my invention.
The inking-roll L in the present embodiment of my invention is provided with the usual peripheral covering of absorbent material and has its trunnions journaled in arms 1'', fixed to and depending from a transverse shaftj, which has one of its ends arranged in an aperture in one frame-upright G and its other end removably secured by a hook 7c in a notch in the other frame-upright G, as best shown in Fig. at. At its end adjacent to the hook 7t" the shaft is provided with an upwardly-extending arm Z, between which and the rear portion of the adjacent f rame-upri ght a coiled spring m is stretched for the purpose of holding the inkingroll under pressure against the printing-roll. The trunnions of the roll M extend through notches n in the forward portions of the frame-uprights and are journaled in arms p, pivotally connected at their rear ends to the outer sides of said uprights, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The forward depending portions of said arms 19 are connected together bya cross-rod q, and the forward end of one arm is connected by a stretched coiled spring 9" with the rear portion of the adjacent frame-upright, as shown in Fig. 3, while the forward end of the other arm at the left-hand side of the machine is connected by a stretched coiled spring 1' with a lever B, fulcrumed on the left-hand trunnion b of the take-up roll Q, whereby it will be seen that the roll M will be held under teases yielding pressure and enabled to press the web or strip of paper against the printingcylinder to insure the production of a good impression on said paper. From the roll M the web of paper passes over the support P and the idler-roll N in the order named and is then wound on the take-up roll K. Said takeup roll is provided on its trunnion l) and at the outer side of the right-hand frame-upright G with a disk S, which is fixed to said trunnion, and, in addition to peripheral ratchet-teeth s, has a peripheral notch 15 of the shape and proportional size best shown by dotted lines in Fig. 7. The trunnion Z) also serves to support a bell-crank lever '1, one of the arms, a, of which is designed to extend through the slot o in the upper casesection B, while its other arm, 10', is provided with a pivoted gravitating dog 00, (see Figs. (3
and 7,) arranged to engage theteeth of the ratchet-disk S. Fulcrumed on the frame-upright above the angular branch 11 of dog 00 is a stop-lever U, which normally rests on a stud .e", projecting from the frame-upright, and has two shoulders a (t the former to limit the rearward movement of the dog at, so that the disk S and the take-up roll Q, will be turned the distance of but one tooth incident to each short oscillation of the lever T and the latter to limit the rearward movement of the dog when the same drops into the notch 25 and out of engagement with shoulder a precedent to the long oscillation of the lever. The long oscillation of the lever T and the consequent long movements of the disk S and take-up roll Q take place incident to each complete revolution of such take-up roll and at the times when the blank spaces on the strip or web of paper due to the depression 7t of the printing-cylinder K reach the opening 13, presently described, in the upper casesection and are intended to quickly carry such blank spaces and the dates and column-headings past the said opening.
The lever R at the left-hand side of the machine is provided with an arm 10 which carries a gravitating dog .13 and this dog, which is similar to dog (0 on the lever T, is designed to operate in conjunction with a ratchet-disk S and a stop-lever U which are similar in all respects to the disk S and stoplever U, respectively, at the right-hand side of the machine. From this it follows that when the drawer O is pulled outwardly the spring 7' (see Fig. at) will draw the lower arm of the lever B forwardly, and then when the drawer is shoved back into the case its projection s, acting against said lower arm of the lever, will rock the lever in the direction indicated by arrow and if the dog w on said lever be presented to the teeth 5 of disk S turn said disk and the take-up roll the distance of one tooth. It when the drawer is pulled outwardly the dog 03 on lever R is presented to and drops into the notch L of the disk S", the said disk and the troll Q will, on the subsequent inward movement of the drawer, be turned a comparatively long distance. For the purpose of preventing retrograde movement of the take-up roll Q the spring-actuated pawl Q which engages the gear-wheel on the trunnion b of said roll, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided.
As shown in Fig. 1, the upper section B of the machine-case is provided with the opening B, which when the case-section is in its operative position is arranged to rest over the support P, before referred to. Said opening B is designed to enable the operator to make entries on the web or strip of paper B and a glass 13 is arranged in its upper portion, beneath which the Web or strip of paper is carried subsequent to the placing of entries thereon.
In the practical operation of my improved machine the operator makes an entry of each business transaction in the proper column of the Web or strip of paper B through the opening B and then either oscillates the lever T or opens and closes the drawer O to partially turn the take-up roll Q, wind the Web or sheet of paper thereon, and draw the portion of the Web or sheet bearing the entry beneath the glass B If the business transaction entered on the web or strip 13 is one which entails putting moneyin or taking money out of the drawer O, the turning ofthe roll Q and the winding of the Web or sheet of paper thereon is accomplished by opening and closing the drawer; but if the transaction is one which does not involve the payment of money, then the turning of the roll Q and the taking up of the web or strip of paper are effected through the medium of the lever T. As the take-up roll is turned step by step through the medium of either the drawer C or lever T, the printing-cylinder K will also be turned step by step, and in consequence will print the date, column-headings, and column-lines on the web or sheet of paper, precedent to the passage of the same below the opening 13 in the,
upper case-section. It will also be observed that the web or strip of paper is divided by the blank spaces, due to the depression h of the printing-cylinder, into pages of uniform size, each of which is dated and provided with columns and column-headings. The strip or web of paper is also so Wound on the take-up roll Q that all of its blank spaces-i. a, the spaces intermediate of its printed page portions--will rest coincident with each other and over a longitudinal string Q, on the periphery of said roll, which string is permanently connected at one end to apost a located adjacent to one end of the roll, and has its other end detachably connected to an eye a located adjacent to the opposite end of the roll. (All best shown in Fig. 2.) From this it follows that at the close of a business day or other desired period the operator of the machine is enabled by detaching the end of the string Q from eye a and drawing said string toward the post a to cut the web or sheet B into sheets of uniform size convenient for binding or filing for reference. Each of these sheets is dated and provided with headings and columns, and if the entries have been properly made they constitute as complete a record of a days business as a properly-kept day-book.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that every time a record of a business transaction is entered on the web or strip 13 said strip must be moved through the medium of either the drawer O or the lever T before another transaction can be entered in the same column as the first-named entry; also, that when the portion of the strip bearing the entries passes the opening B access cannot be gained to said entries for the purpose of changing the same or for any other purpose without opening the case.
The armsp, in which the roll M is mounted, are adapted to be swung upwardly, this with a View of carrying said roll and the strip of paper away from the printing-cylinder, so as to afford convenient access to the date-printing type and enable a person to readily change the same. When the arms are swung upwardly and rearwardly beyond the vertical plane of their pivotal connections, they will obviously be held against casual movement from such position by the springs 1" 1' The end of the strip or web of paper may be connected to the periphery of the take-up roll Q in any suitable manner, although I prefer to connect it by a bar arranged and held by frictional contact in a groove in said roll, as shown in Fig. 5.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening in its top, a support disposed in the case below said opening, a printing-cylinder mounted Within the case and equipped to print column-headings or other matter on a strip or web of paper precedent to the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, and also equipped to leave blank spaces on the strip or web of paper immediately before the column-headings or other printed matter, a take-up roll, and means for turning the take-up roll step by step, and for also turning it a comparatively long distance incident to each of its revolutions, the latter to quickly carry the blank spaces and the head ings on the paper past the opening in the top of the case.
2. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a take-up roll, a disk fixed with respect to said roll and having teeth, and also having a notch, a lever, a dog carried thereby and arranged to engage the teeth and drop into the notch of the disk, and a stop for limiting the rearward movements of the dog.
3. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a frame, a take-up roll mounted therein, a disk fixed with respect to said roll, and having teeth, and also hava notch, a lever fulcrumed at a suitable point, a pivoted dog carried by the lever and arranged to engage the teeth and drop into the notch of the disk, and a stop-lever fulcrumed on the frame, and disposed above the dog and having shoulders for the engagement thereof.
4. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of the case having an opening in its top, a support in the case below said opening, a printing-cylinder mounted within the case in a position to enable it to print a strip or web of paper precedent to the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, a take-up roll, a ratchetdisk fixed with respect thereto, a lever, a dog carried thereby and arranged to engage said disk, and a driving connection between the take-up roll and the printing-cylinder.
5. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening in its top, a support disposed in the case below said opening, a printing-cylinder mounted within the case, and equipped to print column-headings or other matter on a strip or web of paper precedentto the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, and also equipped to leave blank spaces on the strip or web of paper immediately before the column-headings or other printed matter, a take-up roll, a disk fixed with respect to said roll and having teeth and a notch, a lever, a dog carried by the lever and arranged to engage the teeth and drop into the notch of the disk, and a driving connection between the take-up roll and the printing-cylinder.

In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening in its top, a support disposed in the case below said opening, a printing-cylinder mounted within the case, and having peripheral rules for ruling columns, and also having type for printing headings at the upper ends of said columns, on a strip or web of paper precedent to the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, a take-up roll, and means for operating said take-up roll and printing-cylinder.
7 In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having a drawercompartment, and also having an opening in its top, a support arranged in the case below said opening, a drawer arranged in the drawercompartment, a paper-supporting roll mount ed in the case, a take-up roll for drawing a web or strip of paper off the paper-supporting roll and over the support, a cylinder for printing said strip or web of paper, means in termediate of the drawer and the take-up roll for turning said roll, and a driving connection between the take-up roll and the printing-cylinder.
8. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening B and a slot o in its top, and also having a drawer-compartment, a drawer therein, a support arranged in the case below the opening B, a paper-supporting roll mount-ed within the case, a printing-cylinder also mounted within the case and equipped to print column headings or other matter on a web or strip of paper precedent to the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, and also equipped to leave blank spaces on the strip or web of paper immediately before the column-headings or other matter, a takeup roll, a driving connection between the take-up roll and printing-cylinder, disks fixed with respect to the take-up roll at the ends thereof and having teeth and notches, levers carryingdogs arranged to engage the teeth and drop into the notches of the disks; one of said levers extending through the slot 1) in the case, and the other being arranged to be engaged by the drawer, and stops for limiting the rearward movements of the dogs on the levers.
9. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening in its top, a support disposed in the case below said opening, a printing-cylinder mounted within the case and equipped to print column'headings or other matter on a strip or web of paper precedent to the passage of the same beneath the opening in the top of the case, and also equipped to leave blank spaces on the strip or web immediately before the column-headings or other printed matter, a take-up roll, means for turning the take-up roll step by step, and for also turning it a comparatively long distance incident to each of its revolutions, the latter to quickly carry' the blank spaces and the headings on the paper past the opening in the top of the case, a driving connection between the take-up roll and the printing-cylinder, and a paper-cutting device carried by the take-up roll, and arranged to rest beneath the blank spaces of the paper wound thereon.

In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a case having an opening in its top, a support arranged below said opening, a paper-supporting roll mounted within said case, a printing-roll also arranged within the case in a position to print a web or strip of paper precedent to the passage of the same over the support, an inking-roll yieldingly pressed against the periphery of the printing-cylinder, a roll disposed upon the print IIO ing-cylinder and arranged in front of the sup- I my hand in presence of two subscribing wit port, a swinging, spring-pressed frame carrying said roll, a take-up r011 located in rear of the support, means for turning said take-up 5 roll, and a driving connection between the take-up 1-011 and the printing-cylinder.
